Chapter 46 Mercy or Vengeance
Chapter 46 Mercy or Vengeance
POV: Aria
The judgment chamber is full.
Every significant person in the territories has come to watch. They want to see what I'll do with Lyanna. They want to know if I'm a leader who rules through fear or something else.
Lyanna stands before me in chains again.
She's already crying. Like she knows what's coming. Like she's accepted that this is where her story ends.
And I could end it. I have every right to.
The Council broke her when they couldn't break me. She helped Matthias poison the territories. She stood beside the man who tried to turn me and Kael into weapons. She was complicit in everything that destroyed countless lives.
I could execute her right now. No trial needed. No judgment necessary. Just a nod and the guards would do what the law would permit.
Every reason to kill her is sitting in this room with me.
But I'm remembering something.
I'm remembering that moment when Lyanna freed herself from the ritual bindings and ran toward Matthias to stop him. I'm remembering that she sacrificed her own essence to prevent him from draining me completely. I'm remembering that Damon told me she let him keep her alive even when she had every opportunity to let him die.
Those aren't redemption. They're not forgiveness material. But they're something. They're moments where she chose differently than she had been choosing.
I stand up.
The chamber goes quiet.
My voice echoes when I speak.
Lyanna Silverthorn, you stand accused of betrayal, cruelty, and complicity in the suppression of true bonds. You conspired against your sister. You worked with the Council to maintain a system of control and fear. You aided in the torture of innocents
She's trembling now.
By law and right, I could sentence you to death. And there are many here who would cheer that judgment
I pause.
But I remember that you made a choice at the end. You chose your sister over power. You sacrificed yourself when you could have saved yourself. Those moments don't erase what you did. But they matter
Lyanna's face goes pale like she can't believe what she's hearing.
Therefore, I decree this. You are stripped of all title. All rank. All power. You will be exiled from the Council territories and sent to the New Territories where you can build a new life without status or authority. You'll work with your hands. You'll answer to others. You'll live as an equal with no special station
Her mouth opens but no sound comes out.
I step closer to her.
You destroyed yourself by pursuing power, I say quietly. My voice is cold but not cruel. Now you live knowing you'll never have it again. You'll never sit in a seat of authority. You'll never command respect based on bloodline or position. You'll only have what you can earn through genuine merit and kindness. That's a worse punishment than death. Because you'll have to live with it
Lyanna breaks completely.
She collapses and sobs on the stone floor. Not the controlled tears of before. This is real breaking. This is someone finally understanding the cost of their choices.
The guards reach to lift her but I wave them back.
Let her feel this, I say.
We wait while my sister cries on the floor of the judgment chamber. We wait while everyone watches. We wait while she comes to understand what exile means. Not death but erasure. Not execution but the end of everything she wanted.
After a long time, she stands on her own.
Her face is destroyed. Her composure is gone. She looks smaller without the mask of power.
Thank you, she whispers. For not killing me
That's not kindness, I tell her. That's mercy. And mercy has a price
I nod to the guards.
Take her to the New Territories. See that she's given basic supplies but nothing more. She builds her own life from nothing
As they lead her away, I see Damon standing at the back of the chamber.
Our eyes meet.
I nod slightly. Not forgiveness. But acknowledgment that he's on a path toward redemption too. That his choices at the end matter even if his choices at the beginning were wrong.
He nods back and disappears into the crowd.
Through the bond, I reach for Kael.
Was that the right choice, I ask him. Was mercy the right call
His presence floods back immediately. Not faint anymore. Strong. Like he's gathered himself just to answer me.
Yes, he says. You're becoming the leader they need. The one I could never be. I would have judged with ancient certainty. You judge with human compassion. That's stronger than anything I could offer
And I feel it. The truth of what we've become. He's not lesser for being absent. I'm not weaker for carrying this burden alone. We're just different now. Different but still connected. Still bonded. Still in love.
Lyanna looks back one final time as the guards lead her toward the exit.
Her expression is complicated. Not gratitude exactly. Not regret exactly. But something in between. Something like understanding finally dawning about what she threw away.
Then she's gone.
