Chapter 44 The Weight of Crowns
Chapter 44 The Weight of Crowns
POV: Aria
Fenris sits across from me with maps spread out on the table.
His weathered face is etched with exhaustion. He hasn't slept since Kael ascended. He's been holding the territories together through sheer force of will and organization.
Listen to me, he says. His voice is firm. Council is fragmented but not destroyed. There are still members in hiding. Councilors who escaped the Citadel with resources and power. They're dangerous because they have nothing left to lose. No hierarchy to climb. No reason to follow rules anymore
He points to different regions on the maps.
The territories are in chaos. Every awakened bond is disrupting the old structure. Wolves who were told they couldn't be together are running toward each other. Wolves who were forced into hierarchical pairings are trying to break free. Entire communities are in upheaval because the foundation of Council control is shattered.
People need guidance, he says. Without it, the entire system collapses into anarchy. And anarchy destroys everything
He leans forward.
You have to be the leader now, Aria. The True Keeper. The bridge between wolves and magic. That's not a request. That's the only thing that keeps the territories from falling apart completely
I don't move. Don't speak. The weight of what he's saying is pressing down on me like a physical force.
I'm not a leader, I say finally. My voice sounds hollow even to myself. I'm someone who wanted revenge. That's all I ever was
Fenris nods slowly like he expected that answer.
That's what you were, he says. Before you woke an ancient king. Before you merged with magic. Before you sacrificed the only person you ever loved for the sake of the world. Now you're something more. Now you're a True Keeper who understands what's at stake
Thorne enters the tent.
The Commander looks like she hasn't slept either. She's been organizing refugee camps and hunting down remaining Council members.
The territories will follow you, she says without preamble. You stopped Matthias. You freed the bonds. You gave them hope when there was nothing but darkness. That's enough. More than enough
But I don't want this, I say. I want Kael. I want him here. I want him helping me carry this
The tent goes quiet.
Raven sits beside me. She takes my hand and squeezes it.
He can't, she says gently. But you can. You have to choose right now, Aria. You can be broken and alone. You can grieve him and let the territories fall apart and nothing we fought for will matter. Or you can be broken and build something better. You can take everything you've learned and everything you've suffered and create a world where what happened to you never happens to anyone else
The words hit something deep inside me.
I know she's right. I know the territories need someone. I know there's no one else.
But I also know I can barely exist in my own body right now.
I reach through the bond with Kael.
Should I do this, I ask him. I need you to tell me what to do
The response comes slowly. His presence is faint like he's struggling to reach me across the distance of his scattered consciousness.
It's not what we planned, he says. This was supposed to be my responsibility. My burden as Alpha King. But I chose to become something else. And now the world is asking you to carry what I left behind
His presence flickers.
It's what they need, he continues quietly. And it's what you need too. A purpose beyond grief. A future beyond loss
I feel him trying to support me through the bond. Feel him stretching himself across thousands of connections to reach me personally. Feel the effort it costs him.
And I realize I have to let him go in a different way.
I can't keep pulling him back toward me when he's supposed to be healing the territories. I can't keep asking him to support me when his whole being is meant to sustain everyone else.
I have to stand alone.
I stand up.
Fenris and Thorne and Raven all look at me. They're waiting to hear what I'll say.
Then let's begin, I say. But we're doing this right. No more hierarchies. No more suppression. No more wolves being told who they can love or what they can be. We build something new. A real government. One that listens to the people instead of controlling them
Fenris nods like this is exactly what he hoped I would say.
Thorne moves toward the maps.
We'll need to reestablish basic services first, she says. Food distribution. Medical care. Then we can work on longer term government structure
Raven squeezes my hand once more.
You're going to be incredible at this, she says. I mean it
I'm not sure I believe her. But I'm standing anyway.
And that's what matters right now.
I'm standing.
Through the bond, I feel Kael settle deeper into the territorial magic. Feel him understanding that I'm going to be okay. Feel him focusing his attention back on the healing work the territories need.
And I finally, finally stop pulling him backward.
