Chapter 40 The Ruins

Chapter 40 The Ruins
POV: Aria

The evacuation is chaos.

Resistance fighters pour through the Citadel corridors like water breaking through a failing dam. The walls are coming down in massive chunks. The ceiling is cracking apart, sending showers of stone and dust raining down on everyone below. Everything Matthias built is collapsing into itself now that he's gone. The foundation that held this place together for centuries is crumbling.

I move with them but I'm not really present. My body staggers forward while my consciousness is somewhere else. Somewhere that hurts more than any physical wound could.

Kael is pulling away.

Not all at once. Slowly. Like a hand that's been holding yours is gradually releasing its grip. Finger by finger. Palm by palm. And every second of that release is pure agony. It's like losing something vital. Something that's woven into every part of who I am.

My bond symbols are glowing across my skin now. Not hidden behind clothes or darkness anymore. They cover my arms and neck and face completely. Full marking. The whole world can see what I am. What I've become. A True Keeper marked by an ancient Alpha King. A woman who merged with magic itself.

But those symbols are starting to glow brighter because he's pulling away from me.

It feels like my heart is being ripped out of my chest while I'm still standing. It feels like I'm being torn in half while remaining whole. It feels like dying without the mercy of actually ceasing to exist. The pain is so profound that my legs can barely carry me.

Please, I reach through our connection desperately. My mental voice is frantic. Kael, don't. Don't do this. I'll find another way. There has to be another way. We can figure something out

But his presence is already responding. Already pulling further back. Already preparing for what comes next.

No other way, his voice reaches me. And there was never another way

The Forsaken Lands appear ahead like a ghost returning to haunt me.

The place where this whole story began. Where I was exiled after the betrayal. Where I spent three months alone trying to survive. Where I stumbled into that tomb half dead and found him. Where I woke an ancient Alpha King who's been sleeping for five years. Where everything changed.

We're running toward that edge now. Toward the boundary between the territories and exile. Toward the precipice where I nearly fell five months ago.

My legs give out.

I can't run anymore. My body simply stops moving and I collapse at the cliff edge. The abyss yawns below. The same empty darkness that would have swallowed me if Thorne hadn't changed sides. The same fall that nearly ended everything before it even began. The wind howls up from that void like something alive and angry.

Fenris catches me before I fall.

His strong arms wrap around me and suddenly I'm sobbing. I'm screaming but no sound comes out because the pain is too deep for sound. It's purely internal. It's the agony of being unmade while still being alive. It's the terror of facing a future I can't imagine.

His weathered face is wet with tears too. He understands what's happening. He understands that the king he served all these years is leaving. That the Alpha he followed into battle is ascending into something beyond their reach.

Raven is there beside us. Her face is wet with tears and she's shaking. She reached out to help me up but she's stopped moving. She understands too. She sees her best friend losing the person she loves. She sees the moment that will define everything that comes next.

Behind us, the Citadel is falling.

Stone tumbles down the mountainside like an avalanche. The towers that stood for centuries are collapsing into rubble. The structures that held the old order are crumbling to nothing. The power structure that oppressed the territories for so long is being destroyed literally before our eyes. The Council chambers are gone. The archives are buried. The ritual rooms are sealed under tons of rock.

And I'm losing the person I love more than my own life.

His presence in my consciousness is fading. Not disappearing completely. Just pulling back. Creating distance that wasn't there before. For months we've been merged. For months his consciousness has been intertwined with mine. And now he's stepping away from that union.

Kael, I call through the bond. My mental voice is desperate. Please. I can't do this without you. I can't exist without you in my head. I don't know how to be separate from you anymore

His response comes back quieter now. Softer. Like he's speaking from very far away already. Like he's already beginning his transformation.

Beloved, he says. You will know. You will learn. And you will be magnificent

I feel him gathering his consciousness. Drawing it together like water collecting into a single point. Preparing for something that terrifies me. Preparing for something that will change everything.

What are you doing, I ask. What happens next

But I already know. I can feel it in the way he's organizing his thoughts. In the way he's compressing his consciousness. In the way he's becoming more solid in my mind even as he's pulling away physically. In the way his presence is shifting from intimate to expansive.

He's preparing to transform. He's preparing to become something that's not bound by physical form anymore.

The ground beneath us trembles.

Small at first. Just a subtle vibration that might be the Citadel finally giving way. Then it builds. Rocks shift and tumble. The cliff edge destabilizes slightly. Fenris holds me tighter as the earth shakes beneath us. His grip on me becomes almost desperate. Like he's afraid I might be taken too.

And Kael's essence begins to rise.

It starts from my body like something being drawn upward by an invisible force. Golden light that's unmistakably him. Ancient and powerful and beautiful and heartbreaking. The light that's been burning in my consciousness for months is now ascending. Rising upward into the sky above the ruins of the Citadel.

It rises higher and higher.

Not disappearing into nothingness. Transforming. Becoming something else entirely. Something that connects to the territories themselves. His consciousness is ascending but it's not leaving. It's expanding. It's becoming something larger than a single body could ever contain. Something that's woven into the very magic of the lands.

I feel him spreading out across all seven territories. Across every connection point between the wolves and the magic itself. Across every bond that's forming. Across every heartbeat of the realm. He's not dying.

He's becoming.

The golden light spirals upward in patterns that are too beautiful to watch. I reach for it with everything I have but Fenris won't let go. He understands that if I try to follow, if I try to ascend with him, I'll lose myself completely. I'll dissolve before I can properly help what comes next.

So I watch. I watch as the man I love becomes something more than human. Something that can hold all the territories together. Something that can heal what Matthias broke. Something eternal.

Kael, I whisper through the fading bond. Will I ever see you again

The light pauses. It wavers slightly in the sky like it's hesitating. Like he's listening to me with his entire being.

When you look at a true mate bond forming, you'll see me, he says. When you see wolves choosing each other freely for the first time, you'll see me there. I will be in every sunset that reminds you of home. In every heartbeat of the pack. In the magic itself

Will I ever feel you again, I ask. Will I ever know you're there

You'll feel me in every true connection, he says. In every moment when love conquers fear. I'll be there. Always

And then he's gone.

The light finishes its ascension. It spreads across the sky like dawn breaking over the territories. Like hope taking physical form. Like the world transforming into something new.
