Chapter 41 One Last Moment
Chapter 41 One Last Moment
POV: Aria
He manifests.
One final time. Not translucent like he's been since waking. Not barely there. Completely solid. Completely real. For the first time in this entire ordeal, Kael stands before me as a fully manifested being. As himself.
And he's beautiful in a way that hurts to look at.
It's not just his face or his form. It's the golden light that surrounds him. It's the ancient power that radiates from every part of him. It's knowing that this is the last time I'll ever see him like this.
His hand reaches out and touches my face.
His fingers are warm. Real. They trace the curve of my cheekbone like he's memorizing me. Like he's trying to remember every detail of this moment. I reach up and cover his hand with mine, pressing it against my skin.
There are tears on both our faces.
Neither of us tries to hide them. Neither of us pulls away. We just stand here at the edge of the territories, with the destroyed Citadel behind us and the Forsaken Lands below, and we hold onto each other like this moment is all we have left.
Because it is.
Thank you, he says simply.
For what, I ask. My voice breaks. For losing you
He smiles and it's the saddest smile I've ever seen.
For finding me, he says. For seeing me. For loving me when I was broken. For breaking yourself to save me twice over
I don't know how to answer that. I don't know how to respond to someone thanking you for the agony of loving them.
He kisses my forehead.
His lips are soft and warm and tasting like magic. Like something ancient and powerful and impossible. He holds the kiss there for a long moment like he's trying to pass something to me. Like he's trying to leave a piece of himself behind.
Then he kisses my left cheek.
Then my right.
His tears mix with mine and I'm not sure where I end and he begins anymore. Even though we're being separated, in this moment we're completely merged. Completely one.
Finally he kisses my lips.
It tastes like magic and goodbye. It tastes like every moment we've shared. Every time he held my hand. Every time our bond strengthened. Every moment we chose each other even when it cost everything.
It tastes like love that's willing to die for the world.
When we pull apart, I can barely breathe.
I don't know how to live without you in my head, I whisper. I don't know how to exist as a separate consciousness anymore
Kael's hand moves to my hair and he combs through it gently.
You'll learn, he says. You're stronger than you know. And you won't be alone. Fenris is there. Raven is there. Lyanna is there. The territories are there
But you won't be, I say. The words come out broken.
I will, he tells me. I'll be everywhere you look. Every sunrise that reminds you of home. Every bond formed between two wolves who understand they're meant for each other. Every true mate connection that rings true. I'll be there. In the magic. In the territories. In everything they build
His form is beginning to glow brighter. The golden light is intensifying. He's getting ready. Getting ready to ascend. Getting ready to become something that exists everywhere and nowhere at once.
I want to beg him not to go. I want to find some way to keep him here. I want to undo every choice that led to this moment.
But I know I can't.
This is what love looks like. Not the easy kind. Not the kind that gets to keep the person you love. But the kind that sets them free because keeping them would destroy everything.
This is what sacrifice looks like.
Kael steps back from me.
His hand slips from my face and I let it go even though every part of me screams to hold on. Even though my heart is shattering. Even though I can feel the bond that held us together starting to dissolve.
He steps back and begins to glow brighter.
The golden light explodes outward from him. Not violent. Beautiful. Like sunrise spreading across the territories. Like spring coming to frozen ground. Like hope taking physical form.
His body becomes translucent as the light grows stronger. I can see through him now. I can see the magic that he's becoming. The consciousness that's expanding beyond the physical world. The ancient Alpha King transforming into something that will hold the territories together for centuries.
Aria, his voice reaches me and it's already changing. Already becoming something more than human sound. Already becoming the voice of magic itself.
I love you, I say desperately. I need you to know that. I need you to know that even though I'm letting you go, I love you completely
I know, he says. And that love is why this works. That's why the territories will heal. That's why everything will be okay. Because you loved something other than yourself
He's almost completely gone now. Just the golden light remains. Just the glow of an ancient king becoming territorial magic.
Wait, I call out. Before you go, tell me something true
The light pauses.
What do you want to know, he asks.
Do you regret it. Do you regret waking up. Do you regret any of this
The light doesn't answer with words. It answers with warmth. With presence. With the feeling of his love wrapping around me one final time.
No regrets, the light says. Only gratitude. Only the honor of having loved you
And then he's gone.
