Chapter 96 When the Mountain Fell
Chapter 96 When the Mountain Fell
The third strike shattered the last of the sanctuary's wards. The sound was unlike anything Rowan had ever heard. It wasn't stone breaking. It was something older. Thousands of years of ancient magic splintered apart in a single heartbeat, sending a wave of white light across the mountain. The glowing runes carved into every wall flickered once... Then died. Silence followed Even the wind seemed afraid to move. Then the forest erupted. A deafening roar rolled through the valley as hundreds of figures poured from the trees below. They moved like shadows given form, their armor black as obsidian, faces hidden beneath smooth bone-colored masks. Their presence smothered the mountain.
"They're here," Taryn whispered.
Fenrir's eyes narrowed.
"No."
"They've always been here."
"We just couldn't see them."
Corvin stepped beside Rowan, his sword drawn.
"You stay with me."
She looked at him, wanting to argue. Instead she nodded. For once. She trusted him enough not to fight him.
Across the sanctuary, Jess watched the army climb toward them.
"They don't have souls."
Malric looked at her sharply.
"What?"
"I can't feel them."
Her voice trembled.
"It's like..."
"They're empty."
Malric's jaw tightened.
"Then they aren't alive."
"No."
Jess swallowed hard.
"I think they used to be."
He looked toward the approaching army. For the first time in centuries... Malric felt cold. Caelan stood unmoving near the broken entrance. He watched the army without drawing a weapon.
Fenrir stalked toward him.
"You knew."
"I hoped I was wrong."
"You led them here."
"No."
Caelan finally met the wolf's eyes.
"They've been following Rowan since the day she was born."
Rowan felt her stomach drop.
"What?"
Caelan looked at her.
"They've simply been waiting..."
"...for you to remember."
The first warrior reached the sanctuary. Taryn moved before anyone else. She shifted in mid-stride. Bones snapped. Muscles stretched. Silver-gray fur erupted across her body as she landed on all fours, crashing into the lead attacker with enough force to send both tumbling down the stone steps. The wolves answered immediately. Howls echoed across the mountainside. Dozens of werewolves burst from the surrounding forest, slamming into the advancing army. The mountain exploded into chaos.
"Protect Rowan!"
Fenrir's command thundered across the battlefield. Corvin didn't hesitate.
He grabbed Rowan's hand.
"We're moving."
Before they had taken three steps... Three masked warriors dropped from the broken ceiling. Steel flashed. Corvin met the first blade. The impact rattled his entire arm. The second attacker lunged toward Rowan. A blast of brilliant white light hurled him backward.
Jess. She lowered her glowing hand, breathing hard.
"I've got this one."
Another attacker rushed her. Dark wings exploded from Malric's back. He intercepted the strike, catching the enemy's blade between his own before driving a knee into the warrior's chest. The attacker flew backward through a stone column.
Malric looked over his shoulder.
"You alright?"
Jess rolled her eyes.
"I saved you."
He laughed.
"I noticed."
Another enemy charged. This time they fought together. Without speaking. Without planning. Jess's light drove the attackers into predictable movements while Malric's speed finished what she began.
Fenrir watched them for only a moment before a rare smile crossed his face.
"They've finally figured it out."
Outside...Taryn fought like the mountain itself. Every movement was efficient. Every strike protected another wolf. One of the younger wolves stumbled beneath three attackers. Without hesitation, Taryn launched herself between them.Claws flashed. Two enemies fell. The third raised a spear. Before it struck... An arrow pierced the warrior's throat.
Lyra. Standing atop the sanctuary wall.
"Your left!" she shouted.
Taryn nodded once. No words. No hesitation. Different leaders. Same purpose. Inside... Rowan froze. The battle blurred around her. The sounds faded. Someone... Was calling her. Not with words. With memory. She turned slowly toward the deepest chamber of the sanctuary. A doorway she hadn't noticed before stood open. White light spilled from within.
No one else seemed to see it.
"Rowan."
The voice was gentle. Familiar. Home. She took one step toward it. Then another.
Corvin looked back just in time.
"Rowan!"
She didn't answer. She couldn't. She wasn't hearing him anymore. She walked toward the light as if drawn by an invisible thread.
Caelan saw it immediately. His face lost all color.
"No."
He lunged forward. Too late. The light swallowed Rowan whole. She vanished.
Corvin skidded to a stop where she had been standing.
"ROWAN!"
The sanctuary shook violently. The doorway slammed shut. The light disappeared. Leaving behind only silence. Corvin stared at the empty floor. His sword slipped from his hand.
"No..."
Jess stopped fighting.
"Where did she go?"
Fenrir slowly closed his eyes.
"I was afraid of this."
Malric stepped beside him.
"What happened?"
Fenrir's voice was barely more than a whisper.
"The sanctuary..."
"...has taken her."
Caelan rested one hand against the ancient stone where Rowan had disappeared.
His shoulders slumped.
"She's reached the Chamber of Remembrance."
Corvin grabbed him by the front of his cloak.
"Bring her back."
"I can't."
"You brought us here!"
"I know."
"You knew this would happen!"
Caelan didn't resist. Didn't defend himself. Instead he looked Corvin directly in the eyes.
"If she doesn't remember..."
"...every one of us dies."
Outside... The battle continued to rage. Inside... The people Rowan loved could do nothing. For the first time... The fate of the world rested on Rowan alone. And deep beneath the mountain... She opened her eyes. Someone was waiting for her. A woman with silver hair. Smiling. As though she had been waiting for this moment for thousands of years.
"My child..."
she whispered.
"It's time to remember."
