Chapter 95 The One Who Remained
Chapter 95 The One Who Remained
The silence that followed the stranger's arrival was unbearable. No one moved. The sanctuary, once filled with the clash of steel and the cries of battle, had become unnaturally still. Dust drifted lazily through the shafts of morning light, settling over broken stone and abandoned weapons. The stranger stood just inside the ruined archway. No armor. No weapon. No visible threat. Yet every person in the sanctuary instinctively understood the same thing. If he wished... They were already dead. Corvin shifted in front of Rowan without thinking.
His sword remained lowered, but his body became a wall between her and the newcomer.
"You shouldn't be here."
The stranger smiled sadly.
"I know."
His voice was warm. Almost gentle. It made Rowan's chest ache for reasons she couldn't explain. To her left, Jess instinctively reached for Malric. She hadn't meant to. Her hand simply found his. Malric's fingers wrapped around hers without hesitation. His crimson eyes never left the stranger.
"I can't read him," Jess whispered.
Malric glanced at her.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't feel anything."
Fear crept into her voice.
"I can feel every soul."
"Every vampire."
"Every wolf."
"Even Fenrir."
She swallowed.
"But him..."
"There is nothing."
Malric stepped slightly in front of her.
"Then don't try."
Jess looked at him.
"If you can't see him..."
"I'll stand in front of you."
Their eyes met for only a second. Neither spoke again. Neither needed to. Across the sanctuary, Taryn shifted into position. She didn't transform. Not yet. Instead, she quietly signaled the wolves who had survived the first attack. Three quick hand motions. Two wolves disappeared toward the rear exit. Another climbed onto the fallen wall overlooking the valley.
Scouts. Defensive positions.
Fenrir noticed. A hint of approval crossed his ancient face.
"You've learned."
Taryn never looked away from the stranger.
"You taught me."
Fenrir gave the smallest nod.
"And you've surpassed the lesson."
Lyra remained kneeling. Every member of the First Guard followed her example. Heads bowed. Weapons lowered.
Corvin looked at them in disbelief.
"Why are they kneeling?"
Lyra answered without lifting her head.
"Because there has only ever been one First Guardian."
The stranger closed his eyes briefly.
"Please..."
"There is no need."
"There always has been."
Her voice held quiet conviction.
"There always will be."
Rowan frowned.
"First Guardian?"
The stranger finally looked directly at her.His expression softened.
"There were three."
Fenrir's ears flattened.
"You don't get to tell this story."
The stranger turned toward the ancient wolf.
"No."
"I suppose I don't."
Silence settled again.
Finally Fenrir stepped forward.
"You should have stayed dead."
Pain flickered across the stranger's face.
"I tried."
The words carried no anger. Only exhaustion.
"I truly tried."
"You abandoned us."
"I saved what I could."
"You left her."
Every eye shifted toward Rowan. The stranger's composure cracked for the first time. His voice became barely audible.
"I thought forgetting would save her."
Rowan felt the air leave her lungs.
"What..."
She took one hesitant step forward.
"...do you mean?"
Corvin caught her wrist.
"Don't."
She looked back at him. His face had gone pale.
"I don't trust him."
The stranger nodded.
"You shouldn't."
Corvin blinked.
"What?"
"I've given you no reason."
His gaze lingered on Rowan.
"But I've spent three thousand years wishing I had."
Rowan's head pounded. Every word he spoke felt familiar. Not because she remembered them... Because somewhere inside her, she expected them. A child's laughter echoed in her mind. A hand reaching for hers. Someone promising,
"If anything happens...you must forget me."
She gasped, pressing trembling fingers against her temples.
Corvin caught her before she collapsed.
"Rowan!"
"I'm okay."
She wasn't. She looked at the stranger through blurred vision.
"Who are you?"
This time... He answered.
"My name..."
He hesitated as though speaking it aloud carried a terrible cost.
"...is Caelan."
The name rippled through the sanctuary. Fenrir lowered his head. Jess closed her eyes. Malric muttered an ancient curse beneath his breath. Even Taryn took an involuntary step backward. Only Rowan remained confused.
"It doesn't mean anything to me."
Caelan smiled.
"I know."
"It was never meant to."
Before anyone could speak again... The mountain trembled. Not from an explosion. From footsteps. The sanctuary itself groaned beneath the weight of whatever approached.
Fenrir's eyes widened.
"No..."
Taryn's nostrils flared.
"There are hundreds."
She looked toward the forest beyond the ruined walls.
"They've surrounded us."
The wolves outside answered with warning howls. Lyra rose smoothly to her feet, drawing her silver blade for the first time. Every member of the First Guard did the same. Malric released Jess's hand and stepped beside her, his wings partially unfolding as dark energy flickered across his skin.
"If this turns into a fight," he said quietly, "you stay behind me."
Jess shot him an annoyed look.
"You know I won't."
"I know."
He smiled despite everything.
"So I'll just have to stay beside you."
She smiled back.
"Deal."
Corvin glanced between them and couldn't help the smallest smirk.
"About time."
For one heartbeat... The tension broke. Just enough for everyone to remember what they were fighting for. Then every smile vanished. Outside the sanctuary... Something struck the ancient barrier. Once. The entire mountain shook. Cracks raced across the glowing runes carved into the sanctuary walls. A second impact followed. The light dimmed.
Caelan closed his eyes.
"They found us."
Fenrir looked toward the entrance.
"No."
His voice was heavy with a fear Rowan had never heard before.
"He found us."
The third blow shattered the ancient wards. A roar echoed across the mountain. It wasn't a wolf. It wasn't a vampire. It wasn't an angel. It sounded like the world itself crying out. And for the first time in thousands of years... Fenrir took one step backward.
