Chapter 92 The First Name
Chapter 92 The First Name
The sanctuary had been quiet for nearly an hour. The fire in the center of the room had burned down to glowing embers, casting a warm orange light across the cracked stone floor. Outside, the wind moved through the broken arches, carrying the scent of rain and pine into the ruins. No one spoke much anymore. They were exhausted. The last few days had felt like weeks, and every answer they uncovered only seemed to uncover two more questions. Rowan stood near one of the shattered stained-glass windows, staring into the darkness beyond the ruins. The forest stretched endlessly beneath the moonlight, every shadow seeming just a little too still. Something felt wrong. She couldn't explain it, but it felt as though the world itself had gone unnaturally quiet. Almost... Like it was listening. A shiver crept down her spine. She turned abruptly, scanning the sanctuary behind her. Nothing.
Corvin glanced up from where he sat sharpening one of his daggers.
"You've done that five times."
"I know."
"What are you looking for?"
She rubbed the back of her neck.
"I don't know."
Her voice was quieter than she'd intended.
"It feels like someone keeps standing behind me."
Corvin set the dagger aside and walked over.
"You don't smell anyone?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"No heartbeat."
"No movement."
She frowned.
"I just..."
She hesitated.
"I feel watched."
Across the room, Jess slowly lifted her eyes from the ancient book resting in her lap.
"You're wrong."
Rowan blinked.
"I am?"
Jess closed the worn cover with deliberate care before meeting Rowan's gaze.
"It isn't someone."
A silence settled over the room.
"It's something."
Fenrir's ears twitched. The massive wolf had appeared to be asleep beside one of the fallen columns, but his eyes opened immediately. He slowly rose to his feet. Every movement was deliberate.
Corvin noticed.
"You know what she's talking about."
Fenrir didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked toward the open archway overlooking the forest. His gaze lifted to the stars.
"I know the feeling."
Corvin folded his arms.
"From where?"
Fenrir remained silent for several long moments.
"When I was young."
Jess frowned.
"How young?"
The wolf gave a humorless laugh.
"You measure time in centuries."
"I don't."
His voice carried an age none of them had ever truly heard before.
"It was before the vampire Houses."
"Before the Council."
"Before angels divided themselves."
The room became perfectly still. Rowan had heard Fenrir mention ancient history before, but never like this. Never as someone who had actually lived it.
"What happened?" she asked softly.
Fenrir's eyes never left the sky.
"The world stopped."
No one interrupted.
"The rivers stopped flowing."
"The wind disappeared."
"Even the stars..."
He paused.
"...seemed to wait."
Rowan swallowed.
"What caused it?"
Fenrir finally looked back at her.
"A name."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The first true name."
The words hung in the air. No one spoke. Because none of them knew what they were supposed to mean.
Miles away...Far beneath the Council Citadel... There was no light. There never had been. The prison wasn't built from stone or iron. It had been woven from ancient promises. From oaths that predated kingdoms. From magic so old that no living creature remembered who had created it. For thousands of years... Nothing inside had moved. Until now. A thin crack spread silently across one of the glowing seals. Another followed. Then another. Deep within the darkness, something stirred. A slow breath echoed through the chamber. A voice, rough with centuries of silence, whispered into the void.
"She's awake."
Another voice answered from somewhere deeper in the darkness.
"No."
A pause.
"They've started remembering."
Soft laughter drifted through the prison.
Patient.
Certain.
"It begins again."
Back inside the sanctuary, Jess stared at the book resting in front of her. Her heartbeat quickened. The page had changed. She was certain of it. Words that had been faded and unreadable only moments earlier now appeared as though they had been written in fresh ink.
Corvin stepped beside her.
"What is it?"
Jess ran trembling fingers across the page.
"These weren't here before."
Rowan crossed the room.
"What does it say?"
Jess swallowed before reading aloud.
"When the Forgotten Name walks among the living once more, the world will remember what it was asked to forget."
Silence. The words settled heavily over everyone in the room.
Corvin frowned.
"The Forgotten Name?"
Jess continued reading.
"She shall know herself only after creation remembers her first."
Her voice faltered. She looked up slowly.
"It isn't describing an object."
Rowan's stomach tightened.
"It isn't describing a place either."
Corvin looked between the two women.
"It's talking about someone."
Jess nodded almost imperceptibly.
"I think..."
Her eyes found Rowan.
"...it's talking about you."
The words struck harder than Rowan expected. She laughed once. A short, uncertain sound.
"No."
Jess didn't answer.
Rowan shook her head.
"You're reading it wrong."
"I have to be."
"I don't even know who I am half the time."
Fenrir stepped closer.
"No."
His voice was calm.
"That's exactly why it could be you."
Everyone turned toward him.
He exhaled slowly.
"There were once three guardians."
The sanctuary fell silent again.
"One fell."
"One vanished."
His gaze settled on Rowan with unmistakable sadness.
"And one survived..."
"...by forgetting."
Before Rowan could respond, a low vibration rolled through the sanctuary. The stone beneath their feet trembled. Ancient carvings hidden beneath centuries of dust began to glow one after another, spreading outward in intricate circles beneath Rowan's boots. The symbols weren't appearing. They were awakening. Every candle in the sanctuary ignited at once. Not with fire but with brilliant white light. Corvin instinctively reached for Rowan's hand. The moment their fingers touched... A wave of power exploded outward. The ruined sanctuary shuddered. Across the world, forgotten temples awakened. Ancient seals cracked. Creatures that had slept beneath mountains for thousands of years slowly opened their eyes. Within the Council Citadel, every Elder stopped speaking in the middle of their conversations. One looked toward the northern horizon.
His face drained of color.
"It's begun."
Far beyond the lands ruled by angels... Beyond wolves... Beyond vampires... A pair of silver eyes slowly opened. Recognition flickered across an ancient face.
A quiet smile formed.
"Welcome home..."
"...little sister."
