Chapter 79: Strengths and Weaknesses: The Realization of Weakness
Lux and Nova looked at each other, then both noticed there were rogue wolves watching them.
‘Velvette told me once that I had a strong voice. I just thought she was being metaphorical.’ Pierce said.
‘Sonar.’ Nova said. ‘It was in our training Rosemary.’
‘When I was very young. And it was brief.’
‘You were fascinated by it and you read about it in the castle library.’
‘Yes, I did. But was it in his training?’
‘It’s sonar.’ Rosemary said to Pierce. ‘Lux has sonar. He needs to howl at the frequency that will make the rogues feel like their ears will bleed. And he needs to stand on his hind legs to strengthen his diaphragm.’
‘Rose…’
‘They’re getting closer to us. Nova can’t fully fight yet. She can do some damage, but I don’t know how well we’ll come out of this. They’ll run away if Lux can achieve sonar. And we don’t have much time.’
‘Is that what Veyric did earlier?’
‘Yes. Well, similar. It was more of a warning. But the sonar has to come from you, the alpha king.’
Lux nodded in understanding. He trusted Rosemary and her instincts. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a rogue coming up ready to attack Nova. In an instant, without thinking, he stood on his hind legs and let out a roaring howl that emanated so strongly the waves were visible. Nova fell to her knees and covered her ears close to his legs as the rogue wolf began to run towards her. As he jumped to attack her, he fell dead. The sound waves had made his ear drums explode because he was too close.
Lux’s roar lasted for exactly fifteen seconds. Once he was done he fell next to Nova. Wolf cries could be heard all around them becoming faint as they steadily ran away.
He licked her face hoping she was alright.
‘I’m fine.’ Nova spoke to Lux. ‘Sonar doesn’t affect me in the same way as it does a rogue wolf. It just hurts a little bit. But it won’t kill me. Even close to you.’
They helped each other up and Nova picked up the dead rogue wolf and put him on Lux’s back and they made their way back to the hotel.
As they walked into the side door of the private dining room, both Frankie and Georgia were crying. Frankie was sitting next to an unconscious Max, laying on a cot, who was still in his wolf form, Bear. And Georgia stood alone.
Lux stood on his hind legs and the dead rogue wolf slid off of his back.
Both he and Nova changed into Pierce and Rosemary. Cordelia handed them each a set of clothes and they quickly put them on.
“Where’s Alexander?”
“He didn’t come back.” Georgia whispered through her tears. “The only one here who can mind link with him is Lexy.”
Pierce quickly looked around to assess the situation. Bruce was doing something to the dead rogue Veyric had carried in and Sandra was filling vials with healing elixirs. Velvette was nowhere to be found.
“I’ll go back out and look for him.”
“I’ll go with you.” Rosemary said.
“No, baby. I need you to stay here safe. I can’t lose you.”
“And what would I do if I lost you?”
He huffed… “Fair point. But, just, please, stay here.”
“We can communicate and cover more ground. And the rogues are gone, so there’s little danger.”
“Rose.”
“And Nova has his scent. She’s fine. She can do it. You were right. Changing the second time wasn’t as bad as the first.”
“Rosemary.”
“We need him. We need everyone. We need to find him and the sun is going to set soon. I’m going to help you.”
“Fine.” He grumbled. “Just don’t get killed.”
“The rogues are gone.” She said again and smiled. “You did a really good job with your sonar.”
They both took off their clothes and changed into form. Rosemary was excited at how much easier it had become.
Georgia walked to the door to watch them as they ran off to find him. All she wanted was him. And even though it had only been a day, she couldn’t imagine her life without him. She stood there for what seemed like hours hoping to see the three of them running back together. But there was nothing.
“Georgia.” Bruce took her out of her focus.
“Yes, Alpha?”
“Come look at this.”
She came over to look at his findings. He held out a bloody small rectangle with squiggles and very small writing on it.
“He chipped them.” She looked at Bruce. “He chipped them.” She said again surprised. “This is the first or second set of wolves. I had the toads let them go but I didn’t know they were chipped. That means he didn’t trust me from the beginning.”
“Focus, Georgia.” Bruce warned. “No feelings. Just facts right now little one.”
“I need to go get my laptop. It’s in Frankies room. I’ll be right back.” Georgia ran off, thankful to have a task to do to keep her mind occupied.
Meanwhile, Lux and Nova separated to cover more ground. They smelled around and searched steadily trying to pick up his scent. About an hour later, Lux smelled his blood on the grass and found a trail that went on for miles. He called Nova over and the began to follow it until they realized it was too far.
‘We should go back and let everyone know. We’ll need to plan this out. It could be a trap.’ Pierce said to Rosemary over the mind link.
Nova nodded and they headed back to the hotel.
Moments later, as they walked in, they noticed that Bruce had moved on to the second rogue. Frankie was still next to Max trying to get the healing elixir into his mouth and Georgia was sitting at a table typing ferociously on her laptop. She looked up as they closed the door and as the disappointment fell on her face she began to type even more fervently.
“They were chipped.” Georgia spat out. “He chipped the fucking rogue wolves, and I didn’t know about it. Where’s Alexander?” She looked at them hopeful and looked behind them.
“We only found a trail of his blood.” Pierce answered.
“It’s possible it’s some kind of trap. If it’s Stark…” Rosemary started.
“It is Stark. And Alexander is worth more to him alive than dead. I know that for a fact.” Georgia’s mix of emotions were coming out as she continued to type. “That I know.” She strengthened the fact in her mind. “Asshole.” She mumbled under her breath as she continued to type. “To think that I believed him. I fell for… never mind. He was farther along than he let on!” She looked up at Pierce and Rosemary angry and bewildered.
"We have to find him."
