Chapter 85: The Wolves of the Eclipse
Chapter 85: The Wolves of the Eclipse
“Come out,” Kara hissed, her voice echoing through the endless dark.
The eyes watching her didn’t blink. They gleamed like molten glass a dozen, then two dozen, shifting in a slow, coordinated rhythm.
The Eclipse Realm trembled.
Every instinct screamed run, but she forced her legs still. Wolves didn’t run from the shadows, not twice.
The air pulsed, thick with an energy that made her teeth ache. Then, the first shape emerged tall, lean, and wrong.
A wolf or what used to be one.
Its body shimmered with smoke instead of fur, its bones flickering through the haze as if reality couldn’t decide whether to keep it solid. Its eyes burned with silver fire.
Behind it, more shapes formed.
An army of them.
Eclipse Wolves.
Kara drew a sharp breath and flexed her hands. The light responded, sparking between her fingers unstable but alive.
The lead wolf growled, the sound low and vibrating like a distant earthquake.
She gritted her teeth. “I’ve already died once. You’ll have to do better than that.”
The wolf lunged.
She moved before thinking ducked, rolled, brought her palm up just as its claws scraped against her shoulder. Light erupted, a violent burst that seared through its body.
The creature shrieked not in pain, but in recognition.
It knew her.
Kara didn’t hesitate. She drove her glowing fist into its chest and unleashed everything she had.
The wolf exploded into dust and vanished.
The others didn’t flee.
They howled a haunting, layered sound that twisted through the void and charged.
Kara spun, ducked, and leapt through the horde. Her every move sent light arcing through the air gold streaks cutting across blackness.
She was outnumbered. Surrounded. But not powerless.
The Eclipse pulsed beneath her, almost reacting to her rage, the ground shifting and coiling like a living thing.
One wolf snapped at her neck, she ducked low, then kicked upward, breaking its jaw. Another pounced, and she twisted midair, landing in a crouch that sent a shockwave of light outward.
They fell but more kept coming.
And then
A voice.
“Still reckless, I see.”
Her head whipped around.
Silverclaw stood a few feet away, smirking, untouched by the chaos.
“You brought them,” Kara said, her tone sharp enough to cut glass.
“I didn’t bring them,” he said calmly. “They were already hunting. I simply… showed them where to look.”
“You’re helping them?”
“I’m helping you, Kara.”
Her laugh was bitter. “By letting me die again?”
He stepped closer, and the Eclipse Wolves froze as if afraid to move when he did.
“No,” he said. “By showing you how to live as what you’ve become.”
Kara’s light flickered. Her body was trembling, exhaustion clawing at her.
“I’m not like you,” she spat.
“You are like me,” Silverclaw said softly. “You crossed over. You’ve touched the Eclipse. It marked you. You can feel it, can’t you? The way it’s breathing with you now?”
She hated that he was right.
Every pulse in her veins echoed the rhythm of the realm dark and alive.
“If you fight it,” he said, “it will devour you. If you accept it… you might control it.”
Her jaw clenched. “And what happens to me after that?”
“Then,” he said with a slow, wicked grin, “you stop being prey. You become what the Eclipse fears.”
Kara didn’t answer, she just lifted her hand again.
The light within her pulsed, but this time, it wasn’t gold.
It was silver.
Meanwhile Lunar Heights
Alex stumbled back, gasping, the map table scattering under his hand.
Maya was at his side in an instant. “Alex, what’s wrong?”
He clutched his chest. “She’s… she’s fighting.”
“Who?”
“Kara.”
Lucas frowned. “You’re saying you can feel her?”
He nodded, voice tight. “It’s faint, but it’s there. Like her heartbeat’s in my head.”
Cain’s expression darkened. “That doesn’t sound healthy.”
Alex ignored him, his eyes glowing faintly gold. “She’s alive, and she’s not alone. Whatever’s in that realm it’s trying to consume her.”
Maya leaned over the table. “Then we open a door.”
Lucas scoffed. “Into the Eclipse Realm? Do you hear yourself?”
“We’ve done worse,” Maya shot back. “Remember Bloodfang’s fortress?”
Lucas hesitated. “…Fair.”
Alex straightened, resolve in his gaze. “Get the mystics. We’re opening a bridge.”
Back in the shadowed void, Kara’s light burned brighter and then it changed.
Gold turned to silver. Silver to black.
And when the light burst outward this time, it didn’t destroy the wolves. It absorbed them.
They howled, dissolving into streaks of smoke that wrapped around her arms, embedding into her skin like living tattoos.
She gasped not in pain, but in realization.
The Eclipse had merged with her power.
Silverclaw’s smirk faded into something almost reverent. “You did it.”
Kara stared at her hands, veins now glowing with an eerie, silvery flame. “What… is this?”
“Balance,” he whispered. “Light and shadow. Death and life. You’ve become the bridge.”
“I don’t want to be a bridge,” she said, her voice low. “I want to go home.”
He stepped closer. “Then open the path.”
“How?”
He smiled faintly. “You already know how.”
And before she could ask again, he vanished fading into the smoke, leaving only the echo of his voice:
“Follow the bond.”
In Lunar Heights, the pack gathered outside as the eclipse moon began to pulse brighter, faster, alive.
Maya looked up, eyes wide. “Something’s happening.”
Cain frowned. “Please tell me that’s not the world ending.”
Lucas shielded his eyes. “It’s not ending, it's opening.”
And then, with a sound like splitting thunder, the sky cracked just for a second.
A streak of silver light spilled through.
Alex stepped forward, heart pounding. “Kara…”
In the Eclipse Realm, Kara stood beneath a storm of black and silver, her hands raised. The portal shimmered before her fragile, flickering between worlds.
Through it, she saw them, Alex, Maya, Lucas. The den. Home.
Tears stung her eyes.
But then movement behind her.
A shadow rose massive, winged, its form rippling like smoke on fire.
Not Silverclaw.
Something older.
Something that had been waiting.
“Kara…” The voice was deep, ancient, and heavy with hunger. “You carry what was once mine.”
She turned slowly every muscle tense.
“Who are you?”
The creature smiled, a mouth made of darkness and flame.
“I am the Eclipse.”
And the portal shattered.
