Chapter 71: Into the First Shadow
The scar on Alex’s palm pulsed with relentless intensity.
A cold, rhythmic throb.
A summons.
A warning.
The moon shone above Lunar Heights, but its light felt distant.
Muted.
Disconnected.
The pack stood with him in the den’s command room.
The map of the city lay before them, marked with sigils, battle lines, and old scars from past wars.
But tonight, none of those mattered.
Because tonight, Alex wasn't facing another rival pack.
Or even a corrupted moon.
He was facing something ancient.
Something that existed before packs, before werewolves.
Before the moon itself.
The First Shadow.
Umbra Primis.
Its voice echoed faintly in his mind.
Come to me, Alpha.
His wolf stirred uneasily.
This wasn’t the usual thrill before a fight.
This was dread.
Deep. Primal.
Cain broke the silence.
"So, what’s the plan?"
Alex’s eyes lifted to the map.
He tapped a point just beyond the eastern district.
"The old quarry," he said.
Maya leaned closer.
"Why there?"
"It’s where the ley lines intersect," the Elder explained.
"The Devourer's fracture was beneath the grove, but Umbra Primis is rooted deeper. The quarry sits at the city’s oldest convergence point."
Alex's scar pulsed again.
"It's calling me there," Alex said.
Cain cracked his knuckles.
"Then let's go smash it."
The Elder shook his head.
"This isn't a fight we win with brute strength."
Cain scowled.
"Then how do we win?"
The Elder’s gaze turned to Alex.
"With him."
The room fell silent.
Maya's brow furrowed.
"Alone?"
The Elder nodded slowly.
"If we all go, Umbra Primis will attack the pack's connection to the moon. It wants Alex and Alex alone."
Cain slammed his fist into the wall.
"No damn way. We don't send him in solo."
Alex’s jaw tightened.
"I’m not asking permission."
Cain’s nostrils flared.
"You're our alpha, Alex. Not our sacrifice."
Alex exhaled.
"And she's our guardian," he said softly, glancing toward the grove.
His wolf growled low.
"If Umbra Primis destroys the tree... Kara dies."
The scar on his palm throbbed again.
Harder this time.
The shadows beyond the window shifted.
The First Shadow was growing impatient.
Come, Alpha. Or I will take her.
Alex met Cain’s eyes.
"I have to go," Alex said.
Cain cursed and turned away.
Maya’s eyes shone with unshed tears.
"We're Crescent Fang," she said hoarsely.
"We fight together."
Alex's voice softened.
"We did fight together. And we won."
His gaze dropped to his scarred palm.
"But this... this is mine to finish."
The Elder placed a hand on Alex's shoulder.
"The moon watches," the Elder said.
"And the pack stands with you... even from afar."
Alex gave a tight nod.
Then turned toward the door.
Cain’s voice stopped him.
"Alpha."
Alex turned.
Cain saluted with his axe.
"Don’t die," Cain said gruffly.
Alex's lips quirked in a faint smile.
"I’ll try not to."
Then he shifted into wolf form and sprinted into the night.
The city blurred past him as he ran.
The moonlight guided his steps, but its glow was faint.
The quarry lay east of the industrial zone.
Once a pit of stone and dust.
Now an empty scar on the earth.
His wolf sensed the shift as he neared it.
The air thickened.
The shadows grew heavier.
The scar on his palm flared with every step.
The voice whispered louder now.
Closer...
The quarry appeared before him.
A vast crater bathed in pale moonlight.
The ground was cracked and fractured like brittle glass.
The shadows pooled at its center.
Waiting.
Watching.
Alex shifted back to human form and stood at the edge.
His breath misted in the cold night air.
The scar on his palm glowed faintly silver.
The shadows below pulsed with crimson veins.
He descended the slope slowly.
His boots crunched against the loose gravel.
The scar burned hotter with each step.
The shadows coiled toward him.
The wolf inside him snarled.
The scar split open.
Blood trickled down his wrist.
The shadows drank it in.
And the voice changed.
Welcome, Alpha.
The quarry's center was a pool of swirling darkness.
The shadows thickened, rising like smoke.
Alex stepped onto the cracked earth.
The ground trembled beneath him.
The shadows shifted and condensed.
They swirled upward into a humanoid figure.
Its form was taller than any human.
Its features are smooth and undefined.
Its eyes were twin voids.
Blacker than the night itself.
The First Shadow.
Umbra Primis.
The voice resonated without sound.
You answered the call.
Alex bared his teeth.
"You threatened my pack."
The figure tilted its head.
I called for you, Alpha. The pack... was motivation.
Alex’s wolf bristled.
"What do you want?"
The shadow’s mouth formed a mockery of a smile.
The moon.
The shadow gestured toward Alex’s chest.
Its essence lies within you. The scar of the lunar core. You hold its key.
Alex’s heart pounded.
The scar.
The mark left when he'd drawn on the moon's core to defeat the Devourer.
Umbra Primis wanted that power.
Alex stepped backward.
"You won’t get it."
The shadow's form rippled.
I already have it.
The scar flared white-hot.
Alex collapsed to one knee.
The pain was blinding.
The shadow reached toward him.
Tendrils of darkness coiled around Alex’s arm.
The scar burned like molten fire.
The moonlight above dimmed.
Alex’s wolf howled in agony.
The shadows coiled tighter.
The moon abandoned you, Alpha. You are mine now.
Back at the grove, the oak shuddered violently.
The silver bark cracked.
The Elder slammed his staff into the ground.
"It’s begun," he said.
Cain and Maya stood ready.
The moonlight flickered.
"Kara’s presence is fading," the Elder said.
Maya’s eyes darted to the tree.
"So we do nothing?"
The Elder’s jaw clenched.
"The bond must hold."
Cain gripped his axe.
"And if it doesn’t?"
The Elder didn’t answer.
Because if the bond broke...
The moon's power would fall forever.
The shadows thickened around Alex.
The scar’s light dimmed beneath the dark tendrils.
Umbra Primis's voice was cold and endless.
The moon is a lie. Light cannot last forever. Surrender.
Alex gritted his teeth.
The pain was unbearable.
The shadows clawed at his mind.
Pulling him toward oblivion.
His wolf whimpered.
The scar throbbed again.
But this time, the pain shifted.
The silver glow within it pulsed faintly.
Warm.
Familiar.
A whisper rode the warmth.
Soft. Steady.
Kara’s voice.
"Get up, Alex."
His eyes snapped open.
The shadow's grip faltered.
The scar flared with renewed energy.
Silver veins spread up Alex’s arm.
The wolf inside him surged.
The moon’s presence returned.
He planted his feet firmly.
The scar blazed.
The shadows recoiled.
Umbra Primis hissed.
Impossible!
Alex’s eyes burned silver.
"You underestimated us," he growled.
The moonlight condensed around him.
He raised his hand.
The scar flared into a spear of pure lunar energy.
The shadow lunged.
Alex hurled the spear.
The silver light pierced Umbra Primis's core.
The shadow screeched in rage.
The cavern shook as the spear exploded with blinding light.
The figure writhed.
Its form splintered and cracked.
No...
The shadows collapsed inward.
The void shattered.
The ground cracked beneath Alex’s feet.
The shadows dissolved.
The quarry fell silent.
The scar on his palm faded to a faint silver mark.
The First Shadow was gone.
Alex stumbled from the quarry at dawn.
The sky blushed pale pink.
His limbs ached.
His wolf was exhausted.
The moon’s energy was still there distant but intact.
The pack met him at the grove.
Cain caught him as he collapsed.
"You're alive," Cain said gruffly.
"Barely," Alex muttered.
The silver oak stood behind them.
The bark was smooth again.
The crack had vanished.
The grove was whole.
Maya knelt beside Alex.
"You did it."
Alex forced a faint smile.
"Not alone."
His gaze shifted toward the tree.
The leaves rustled softly.
The faintest hint of Kara’s scent drifted past.
His heart clenched.
Cain followed his gaze.
"She helped, didn’t she?"
Alex’s voice broke.
"Yeah."
The Elder laid a hand on the tree.
"The moon chose well," the Elder said.
Alex closed his eyes.
The scar no longer burned.
But the loss was permanent.
The First Shadow was defeated.
The moon was safe.
But Kara was gone.
The wind stirred the leaves once more.
And, just for a moment, the warmth of her presence touched his heart.
He whispered softly:
"Thank you, Kara."
The tree shimmered faintly.
And the moon…
Watched silently from above.
