Chapter 70 Now, they both want me?
Isla’s POV.
Evening lights flickered across the streets as I walked through.
The day was already over. I had left the office earlier, unlike me.
I had always waited for a ride home with him.
It’s been weeks since we last spoke.
I knew I couldn't stay away from him completely, since we worked together.
My heart pounded whenever he was close or gripped my wrist.
Even when my body wants to give in to his touch, my mind refuses.
I’d push him away, or say words I wouldn’t say to anyone I care about.
I refuse to let anyone or anything make me lose myself.
Cars passed, people walked by, the noise made me kind of forget about what was going on in my head.
Honestly, I hadn’t felt this alive before. Earlier I was suffocating in my thoughts, I almost got hit by a car.
My phone vibrated.
I didn’t look at it, nobody was worth making me distracted in my little moment.
It vibrated again, and then for the third time.
Anger tightened my chest as my hand tapped on the screen.
It was Damian. “Hmmm,” I hummed. What does he want now?
“Where are you? I came to pick you up, but I couldn't find you at the company.”
Came to pick me up? Is this some kind of joke?
Another message came, from Dante.
“You left without me.”
My body flared hot and cold all at once.
Is this some kind of new game they’re playing?
I returned the message to Damian. “Quit these sneaky tricks of yours I’m not interested in them.”
And then to Dante. “I want to have a moment alone.”
Are they making me a golden prize in their games now?
It didn’t matter anyway, their tricks won’t get to me.
It was almost half past ten when I got home.
I had waved down a taxi when my legs couldn’t carry me anymore.
And I really enjoyed it. I felt free for once in my life.
They were both standing at the door when I arrived.
“Where have you been?” Dante asked, moving toward me.
“Why weren’t you picking my calls, I thought something happened…” Damian followed.
My legs stopped moving as I stood still, looking at them eyes wide.
“Why do you both pretend like you care when you clearly don’t?”
“Of course you know I care about you,” Dante cut me off.
Damian gripped my wrist. “I remember telling you not to walk alone at night. The city isn’t safe for a delicate woman like you.”
Dante cleared his throat, eyes locked on mine.
He gripped my other hand. “You made me so worried, I almost lost it.”
What’s this? What are they doing? Fighting for who would have me?
Is this some kind of madness? I tried to pull my hands away but to no avail.
I opened my mouth to say something but my throat was dry.
If I don’t let go quickly this might turn to something worse and it won’t end well for me.
“What episode of your movie is this? Fighting for who will own the prize?”
“I just don’t get it. What are you guys playing at?”
“Get your hands off me, you’re hurting my wrists.”
They pulled free in one go.
My legs moved before my body did. Forced myself on their middle straight into the house.
Servants didn’t stop looking, the butler was terrified as if she had seen a ghost.
“What are you looking at?” Dante said, voice cold.
They all turned and left without haste.
Thunder rumbled in the distance as rain started drizzling.
“Thank goodness I was home.”
“Isla,” Damian said. “Can we talk?”
“About what? About how you both are acting insane? Or about why you suddenly want to care about me?”
“I’ve always cared about you, Isla. I just…”
“She’s mine, Damian.” Dante interrupted.
“You don’t get to make that decision for her, brother.”
“You already signed the divorce papers which makes her mine.”
“And I remember how you had rejected and insisted that I marry her in your place…”
My heart sank, I froze mid-air.
“Interesting. So this was how it was.”
“A girl being rejected by her supposed husband before meeting her or the brother who married the girl but didn’t care about her because he has a mistress who he cares about? How do I say it?”
“Go on! Spill the beans, say it! Tell me more of it. Tell me how you’ve been toying with me all along?”
They both went silent in one go. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
The two powerful figures of the Romano empire, fighting for a woman?
“Why are you suddenly quiet, huh?”
I turned to Dante, tears almost stung my eyes. “You tell me. Was I that cheap to be your bride, huh?”
Then turned at Damian. “Was I worthless of your time and attention? Do I look so miserable to you?”
Damian opened his mouth to say something. “Isla, I…”
“You weren’t cheap, Isla. I was scared…” Dante cut him off.
“Scared of what? That I was some girl who only cared about your shitty money and your awful power?”
“No, that wasn’t what I meant…”
“You didn’t even get to know me and you just concluded?”
Damian moved slowly toward me. “Isla, you were worth my time, I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“Are you saying allowing your mistress to humiliate me at every turn she gets wasn’t intentional? Are you saying watching her insult my mother was a joke?”
“You know what? Go to hell!”
I ran into my room and banged the door behind me.
My back slid down the door, to the floor.
I curled my body together as tears rolled down my cheeks.
And the worst part? My heart hurt so much like there was a knife being pierced into it.
My eyes blurred with tears, my mouth moved soundlessly, my feet went cold.
And then, my phone buzzed.
I tapped on it. An unknown number.
Now that you know the truth, which of the twins are you going to choose?
