Chapter 179 Battle for Tenebrous
Chapter 179 Battle for Tenebrous
The scent of war still hung in the air like a curse. Despite their many defeats, the enemies never seemed to run out of options. The allied forces of Tenebrous were stretched thin and exhausted, but something powerful kept them strong: hope.
They were gathered once again at the Ravenswood estate ground where they camped, and Alex was about to address them as they prepared for what could possibly be the last clash for the city. Avery walked beside him as he climbed to the top of an elevated platform that had been set up for him, from which he would give his speech. Beneath them, the ground was filled with a decent crowd of their allied forces: humans and supernaturals alike. Despite their differences, it was a gathering driven by the need to protect their home.
Alex lifted his hands for silence, standing still as the wind swept around him. He looked at Avery and she smiled at him, a companion he did not know if he deserved, but knew was the only reason why he was still alive. He looked out towards the gathered crowd; his people, his army. He took in the look of determination on their faces, and his eyes softened.
“I see faces here that I never expected to stand before me,” he began, in a calm and noble voice. “Humans and supernaturals, side by side. I see people who have lost, who have endured after being pushed down over and over again, and yet have managed to rise again despite the odds being against them.”
There was total silence as he spoke, and even the birds in the air seemed to be listening.
“I have spent my life in the shadows,” Alex continued. “Fighting wars the world never knew were being fought. I have buried friends, and I have made enemies. I have done things I am not entirely proud of, but you,” he looked around as emotion filled his voice. “You all have given me a cause and a reason to keep on fighting.”
Avery stepped closer to him, and gently took his hand in hers. The simple gesture made more than a few hearts in the crowd stir, and then she spoke to them in a strong and powerful voice.
“When I first met Alex, I did not believe in any of this. I had no idea about the existence of the supernatural in this city, I was just a girl who had lost her job and had debts to pay. I never thought I would be standing on the edge of war with a werewolf Alpha I have come to love,” she said, pausing as a few gasps broke from the crowd. She smiled through it. “Yes. I love him, just as much as I love this city. And I will give everything to protect both.”
A thunderous applause erupted from the crowd like thunder, and a new surge of energy swept through the mass of bodies like a shared heartbeat. A human teenager raised his fist in the air and shouted, “For Tenebrous!” and others joined in.
But the moment was only beginning.
Simon, who has been standing near the tech crew with Rufus, turned as a voice came in through a walkie-talkie. His eyes widened in surprise, and he quickly rushed to join Avery and Alex on the platform. “You might want to see this,” he muttered, tapping the screen of his phone to show them a video from their security cameras.
The footage zoomed out, showing the entire front of the estate and beyond. A growing crowd was approaching the estate like a gathering storm of flesh and fire. Thousands of people were spilling in from the streets, and from every corner– they were not running away, they were marching forward.
Simon squinted and grabbed a pair of binoculars. “That is not just a crowd, Alex, that's the entire city.”
Alex and Avery stared as the crowd reached the estate gates and surged in, heading straight at the gathered army.
The entire population of Tenebrous had risen.
At the front of the wave was the mayor himself, Buzz Hendricks, proudly leading his people in a simple trench coat. Standing beside him with a proud look on his face was none other than Marlboro, who had only told them he was going out for a few supplies. His scowl was gone, and the weariness in his eyes had been replaced with an inspired energy– He was smiling.
When they reached the gathered army, the mayor climbed the steps and stood before Alex, a tense meeting of the two leaders who apparently led the humans and supernaturals of Tenebrous.
“You have sacrificed a great deal for us in the face of this terrible war,” he said solemnly. We have watched in fear for the past few weeks while you and your people stand and fight for our home. Now we are here to stand with you and finish this fight together.”
Alex looked at him in surprise, the moment touching him deeply. He was lost for words as he saw the crowd that had followed the mayor. All of Tenebrous, young and old were gathered together, away from the safety of the shelters and safe houses, with no guarantee of their survival, but still willing to fight alongside the supernaturals. Alex turned back to Hendricks who had his hand stretched out, and took it in a firm and strong handshake. The mayor also shook Avery warmly, telling her how she was such an inspiration.
Below them, the people of Tenebrous began to chant.
“Alpha Alex! Luna Avery!”
“Alpha Alex! Luna Avery!”
Avery’s throat tightened with emotion, and her knees nearly buckled under the weight of the sound.
“We are with you,” the mayor said again. “Not just the fighters, everyone we have is here to help: mechanics, medics, cooks, mothers, students, and anyone who can lift a brick or throw a punch. We are not hiding anymore.”
Marlboro climbed the platform next, clearing his throat. “I have spent my whole life as a detective suspicious of the motives of your kind, Ravenswood,” he admitted. “But you have shown me that not all supernaturals are evil when you saved this city. You saved me.” He looked gratefully at Avery. “And you– you made me believe in magic again. In the good kind.”
The crowd roared in agreement.
Alex looked at them with a wide smile on his face, then lifted his hands in the air. “Let us put an end to this war for good!”
The cheering rose to a feverish tempo as the crowd finally began to disperse, with everyone branching off to the departments where they would be useful.
Inside the command center in the estate, Alex and the others were gathered in a tense strategic meeting, surrounded by maps and miniature representations of the city itself.
Simon ran his fingers across the large map spread on the table, pausing over the West District just after the barricade. “If we abandon the barricade and hold up here, Elara would be forced to strike through it as she knows it is the softest point to get her large army through without disturbance.”
“She will likely try to split us,” Marlboro added, standing over his shoulder. “She may try to divide our forces and crush us sector by sector.”
“We already received information that she has dark powers now,” Simon muttered. “And our spies reported what she did with it. She made a dangerous artifact, and is feeding on the lives of imprisoned magical beings to sustain its powers. She will be more powerful than Maverick ever was, which would make her underestimate us and actually try to take us all out at once.”
Avery nodded thoughtfully beside Alex. “You are right Simon, she is very arrogant, and that would be to our advantage. Our army has grown, and we have the element of surprise.”
Alex, who had been listening quietly leaned forward, looking every one of his commanders in the eye. “Since the entire city is here, make sure the old and weak are carefully protected in the underground shelters, while those who are not battle ready should assist the medics, tech and logistics. This battle will be bigger than all the others we have faced before.”
“And we will finish it,” Marlboro growled.
Avery stood up. “Elara wants to burn the city down because she thinks it belonged to her. But this city belongs to all of us, and we won’t let her take it.”
They nodded.
A pact sealed in shared purpose.
The following morning was eerily quiet. Too quiet. A strange fog had risen before the sun and rolled over the streets of Tenebrous, covering the edges of the city like a curtain waiting to rise. A distant howl echoed across the air–a warning.
Elara was coming.
And yet–no one trembled. Not anymore.
The army of Tenebrous was ready to defend their home. They stood valiantly beside their supernatural allies, staring in the face of danger, and daring it to come for them. Teenagers handed out water to the fighters, while witches and healers offered protective runes and spells on every surface.
Avery was in her new battle uniform, a magical white armor crafted for her by Melora and blessed by Jessica's fairy magic. The crescent moon symbol of the goddess glowed proudly on her chest.
Alex joined her. “Are you ready for this?”
“I was born for this,” she said with a chuckle.
“No,” he corrected gently, brushing a lock of hair from her face. “You were chosen for this.”
She smiled. “Same thing.”
Then he kissed her–slowly and tenderly, full of the kind of love one could only feel at the end of the world.
As the sun began to rise higher, the last of the Tenebrous defenders began to move into formation. The city had risen not just to survive, but to fight, and to win.
And on the distant horizon, beneath a growing black storm, Elara’s army emerged–dark, twisted, and more terrible than ever before.
The final battle had come.
And Tenebrous was ready.
