Chapter 180 The Final Showdown

Chapter 180 The Final Showdown

The skies above Tenebrous seemed to be aware of the Great War that was about to be fought under its watch. The clouds were dark and the very earth seemed to tremble with anticipation as the armies of Elara and Alex clashed at last in a decisive confrontation that would determine the fate of the city– and perhaps the supernatural world itself.
It was noon and deathly silence had covered the city in the hours before sunset. The Western gate was buzzing with activity as the allied army assembled into battle formations. Humans and supernaturals alike, with patched and mismatched armors, their weapons mostly forged in haste and desperation, and hurriedly blessed with magic. But their eyes burned with the fire of purpose.
Alex and Avery stood at the front, wrapped in the aura of prophecy, of leadership earned through blood and sacrifice. Behind them were Simon, Rufus, Jessica, Marlboro, Melora, and dozens more chosen leaders, each a symbol of defiance against Elara’s darkness.
When the enemy came, they came like a plague.
Elara’s army flooded forward from the ruins of the Lower Wards like an evil black tide. Rogue werewolves with savagely frothing jaws and twisted limbs, terrifying vampires with eyes that looked like burning coals, possessed human corpses with vacant eyes and dark veins streaking across their skin. The entire atmosphere was polluted with the presence of necrotic magic and unholy power.
And leading them unlike Maverick was Elara herself–no longer merely a werewolf witch, but a terrible creature reborn through the powers of her dark orb energy. Her body was a hybrid horror to behold. She glowed with an evil aura, and the demonic corruption of her orb powers covered her like a heavy cloak.
She floated across the battlefield, followed dutifully by her elite and loyal lieutenants–Vargas, Silas, Nico, Duma, and Lysandra. A coalition of doom.
The clash of the two armies was immediate and catastrophic. They met in a thunderous crash that shook the earth, and sent bodies flying into the air. The human members of Alex's forces fought bravely, many for the first time against supernatural foes. They screamed, bled and died, but they refused to flee even in the face of danger. Firearms discharged loudly, and blades slashed the flesh, fur, and bone. Enchanted arrows lit up the sky from Jessica's Celestial Guards, witches unleashed elemental fury, and warlocks sent ripples of energy through the air.
Alex’s forces were initially overwhelmed by the ferocity of Elara’s forces who, driven by her evil powers, fought like the possessed beasts that they were–unfeeling and ruthless. The enemy warlocks rained acidic mist over battalions, and vampire foot soldiers slashed through human lines like paper. Their numbers were taking a massive blow.
Avery launched forward with a column of witches, raising a shield of moonlight that deflected a necromantic blast aimed at a group of wounded medics. She shouted over the chaos, “Fall back to the inner lines! Don’t give them the open field!”
Simon was locked in a duel with Alpha Vargas in another part of the battlefield.
Vargas towered over him, with his massive and heavily mutated werewolf form bulging with raw and unholy power. “I have been watching you bark too loud, mutt,” Vargas snarled at him.
“You shall die to the sound of your own howl,” Simon replied as he shifted also.
They stormed into each other in a clash of raw speed and power, with Simon nimbly dodging under heavy paw swipes from Vargas, and striking nerve joints. The enraged Vargas was swinging furiously, smashing stones and nearby objects to pieces as he tried to hit Simon. He connected a few blows, and soon Simon was bleeding and panting, but he never lost his rhythm.
Not too far away, Rufus and Marlboro were in their own desperate dance of death against Silas.
Silas was levitating using a bronze plated disk, flinging black fireballs at them and summoning skeletal monsters to attack them. “Come, puppets,” he cackled wickedly, “Let me show you how much exile sharpens ambition.”
Rufus dodged a shower of spells and flung a dagger glowing with holy runes. It pierced one of Silas’s spectral shields. “I have sharpened more than my ambition, you sick charlatan,” he grunted. “I have sharpened my aim.”
Marlboro took advantage as Silas was momentarily distracted by Rufus's dagger throw, jumping in from behind and pushing him off his floating disk. As Silas turned to face Marlboro, Rufus jumped at him again and tried to bury another dagger into the warlock, but Silas saw him coming and deflected him into a huge wall.
“This is your end you insolent pig,” Silas muttered wickedly as Rufus struggled painfully to his feet. Silas summoned a blast of magic energy and threw it at Rufus who was still stunned, only for Marlboro to jump in at the last minute, taking the full brunt of the attack and shielding his friend.
Rufus screamed. “NO!”
Marlboro’s body hit the ground, lifeless.
Rufus, enraged beyond words, charged savagely with reckless abandon, dodging through another blast Silas’s magic and finally burying his dagger in the warlock’s heart, ending his reign with a scream that echoed across the field.
Simon who had just managed to rip off Vargas's throat watched sadly as Rufus grieved for a moment, and then savagely channeled his pain into fighting the rest of Elara's minions.
On the southern edge, Jessica was facing off with Nico. The demon lord was strutting about with an arrogant look of boredom on his face. “To think they sent a weak little fairy to war.” He hissed in disdain. What are you going to do princess? Tear me to pieces with your flower tricks?”
Jessica’s magic ignited in a pure white flame. Her eyes glowed as she ignored him and began to mutter ancient chants. Runes erupted across the battlefield beneath them, and even Nico looked up in surprise. “You messed with the wrong daughter of the Fae, demon.”
Nico decided he was still more powerful and hurled a meteor of demonic fire at her, but Jessica easily raised a shield of radiant light that cracked but held off the attack. Then she burst forward, teleporting midair to slam Nico with a spear of starfire. They traded blows with equal ferocity, demonic and celestial in a brutal battle of resilience until Jessica, glancing over to see Simon kneeling beside Marlboro's lifeless body, went into a fit of rage.
She sent Nico flying with a terrible blast, sealed him in a barrier and set him ablaze with celestial fire until he was reduced to dust.
Then she ran over to Simon.
Melora and Dumas had been fighting the whole time, trading magical strikes and using illusions to evade attacks. Dumas had underestimated her as a weak enchantress, but the longer their duel continued, the more he realized that she was more than a match for him.
The frustrated vampire prince bared his fangs and hissed at her in irritation. “I will not fall to a weakling like you, you're beneath me.”
Melora’s face was calm as always. “I see your fear, Dumas, and I will ease you of your suffering.”
He attacked, but she had anticipated every move he would make. Her palms glowed with golden runes as she struck him with consecrated fists, each blow weakening his corrupted blood. She fought defensively, luring him into a trap of mirrored illusions, and then with one final chant, she disintegrated him in a storm of light.
Then, with thunder and brilliance, Jessica’s father arrived. A portal split the sky, and out of it came the full might of the fairy realm.
The Fairy King hung in the air like a god, surrounded by his Celestial Guards in silver armor, and their wings of light spread behind them. At his command, they descended upon the battlefield with divine fury, sweeping Elara’s forces aside like dry leaves.
Lysandra, the banshee queen who had been running rampant and tearing the allied forces to shreds, shrieked into the wind at their arrival, summoning spirits of vengeance. But the Fairy King was already upon her.
His blade sang through the air in one swift swipe and silenced her forever.
The tide of the battle changed immediately with the arrival of the fairy army, and soon Elara's army began to take unimaginable damage.
Elara herself had finally stumbled upon Alex and Avery who had been fighting also their werewolf form.
“How cute,” she hissed, letting out a mocking laugh. “You think love and loyalty will save you from my wrath? I am evolution. I am what comes after peace.”
“You are nothing but a parasite drunk in your own madness,” Avery fired back at her.
Alex gave her a pitiful look. “You are nothing but a disgrace to our kind, Elara. And you will pay for your crimes.”
Elara struck the first blow.
A beam of corrupted dark energy shot toward them, but Alex pushed Avery aside. They rolled, stood up quickly together, and launched their own counterattack. Avery fired blasts of lunar energy from her mouth, while Alex charged at her.
Elara deflected and dodged their attacks with a mad laughter, teleporting in bursts of smoke and shadow. She retaliated with her own blasts that cracked the ground and sent them through a wall.
Alex roared, breaking free with an explosion of enhanced wolf energy as the Lupine Dominion blazed from his chest. Avery rose beside him, her own lunar magic forming a radiant moon behind her. Their eyes met, and without a word, they already knew what they had to do.
Elara was clearly powerful, but she would be no match for the Lupine Dominion, and the Lunar power of the goddess.
They joined hands, switching back to their human forms. Alex’s aura expanded, with the Lunarium's light emerging around him. Avery’s body summoned her lunar armor, and together they rose into the air like the gods themselves.
“Together,” Alex whispered.
Avery nodded. “Always.”
They charged at Elara, who screamed in fury and unleashed everything she had at them. The entire demonic power of her dark orb’s energy, years of hate, and the madness that was slowly eating her up.
The clash shattered reality.
Lightning and moonlight, fury and love, death and defiance. They fought through the skies, through ruins, through time itself. They struck as one, and with each blow they landed, Elara's power weakened. Her hybrid form twisted, her inner demons shrieked, and the dark orb energy began to fail.
Alex and Avery summoned their final move.
The Lunarium glowed even brighter, and Avery’s magic merged with it as one power. They collided with Elara in a final blast of divine energy, and magical threads of her dark orb faded away.
Elara screamed wildly as her power evaporated. Her body collapsed, completely powerless, not even a werewolf anymore.
The war was over.
Alex dropped to one knee, exhausted, as Avery held onto him, both of them breathing heavily.
The people of Tenebrous cheered in the bloody and charred battlefield, weeping, shouting, and chanting.
Alex looked to the sky, to the shining sun.
Peace had returned.
But not without cost.
They stood over Marlboro’s body, and Rufus fell to his knees. “He died saving me,” he wept bitterly.
“He died a hero,” Avery muttered silently with tears in her eyes.
The Fairy King raised his sword in silent tribute. The army knelt. Even the winds seemed to pause.
And as they paid tribute to a fallen hero, the city of Tenebrous took its first breath of peace in what felt like an eternity.
