Chapter 26
Chapter 26
The silence that followed her breakdown was deceptively calm, but still dangerous. It was as though she could snap at anytime again. Alexandria remained curled in Jonathan’s lap on the bedroom floor, her face was still buried against the warm skin of his neck, silent tears still slid down her cheeks.
Her body was heavy with exhaustion, but her mind refused to rest. Shame twisted like barbed wire in her chest. But there was a terrifying, addictive comfort that made her want to crawl deeper into his arms even while her pride screamed at her to run.
She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out all her thoughts. Jonathan held her for a long time without speaking, one hand slowly stroking her back, the other cradling the back of her head. Eventually, he shifted beneath her.
“Are you with me?” he murmured, voice low and steady, and she forced herself to give a small nod. “Alright. I'm going to take care of you, let's get you cleaned up so you can get some rest. pressure.”
She didn’t respond, she had no words left. When he slid one arm under her knees and the other behind her back, lifting her as if she weighed nothing, she let her head fall against his shoulder. Her body felt boneless and broken.
He carried her into the en-suite bathroom and set her gently on the padded bench. Only then did he reach for a pair of black lounge pants and pull them on, the fabric settled low on his hips. The small act of modesty made something in her chest loosen just a fraction; he wasn’t trying to overwhelm her.
Jonathan filled the large freestanding tub with warm water, testing the temperature carefully before adding a few drops of lavender and chamomile oil. The soft herbal scent bloomed in the steam, they were calming and clean. When the tub was full, he helped her step in carefully.
The water embraced her warmly, it enveloped and kissed every inch of her sore body. Alexandria sank down slowly until only her shoulders and head remained above the surface. She drew her knees tightly to her chest, wrapping her arms around them, and stared at the gentle ripples.
The heat soothed the ache between her thighs and the bruise on her ribs, but it did nothing to quiet the storm in her head.
Jonathan knelt beside the tub on the marble floor, completely focused on her.
“Lean your head back for me,” he said softly.
She obeyed, closing her eyes as he gathered her long, dark waves in his hands. He worked shampoo into her scalp with slow circles, his thumbs pressed firmly at her temples, fingers massaged deep into the tight muscles at the base of her skull and down the back of her neck.
The pressure was perfect, it was melting away days of unbearable tension. Every stroke sent pleasant tingles racing down her spine.
But it was all too much for her; he was washing her hair like he hadn't completely ruined her, like he was trying to get into her head again, and it was working. Tears slipped quietly from the corners of her closed eyes and disappeared into the bathwater.
Jonathan noticed but said nothing. He continued the slow, luxurious massage, working the rich lather through every strand, then rinsed her hair thoroughly with warm water poured gently from a small pitcher. The water cascaded over her head gently.
He repeated the process with conditioner, his fingers combing through the lengths with patience, detangling knots she hadn’t even realized were there. When he was finished with her hair, he took a soft cloth and wiped her face with the same tenderness to clean away the last streaks of mascara, brushing damp strands from her forehead, tracing the curve of her cheekbone and jaw with the back of his knuckles.
“You’re doing well,” he whispered. “Keep breathing.”
Alexandria remained quiet, letting the water and his hands do their work. The shame still sat heavy in her stomach, but it had quieted into a dull, exhausted throb. For the first time in hours, she didn’t feel like she was drowning.
Jonathan drained the tub and helped her step out. He wrapped her first in a thick, plush towel, drying her body with slow, respectful pats; her arms, shoulders, the curve of her breasts, down her back, her legs, and carefully between her still-sensitive thighs. His touch was caring, they never lingered sexually.
Once she was dry, he reached into a nearby closet and pulled out a luxurious silk bathrobe in deep emerald green. He held it open for her and she slipped her arms into the cool, buttery-soft fabric. It settled around her comfortingly. Jonathan tied the belt loosely at her waist.
He led her back into the bedroom.
"Sit here for a moment,” he said, guiding her to the plush armchair near the window. She sat obediently, hands folded in her lap over the silk, watching silently as Jonathan stripped the ruined sheets from the bed quickly. He replaced them with fresh, crisp white ones, tucking every corner neatly.
When the bed was ready, he returned to her and crouched so they were eye-level.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, voice low and genuine, his eyes searched hers.
She swallowed hard, her throat was still tight. “Tired,” she whispered.
He nodded slowly.
“Are you hungry?”
She shook her head.
“Does anywhere hurt? Besides the obvious?”
Her fingers brushed lightly over the bruise on her ribs.
Jonathan reached for a tube of soothing ointment, he warmed it between his palms before applying it to the purple mark with feather-light strokes. The cooling sensation brought immediate relief. His touch lingered for a moment before he pulled away.
He handed her two small white pills and a glass of water.
“These will help with the soreness and help you sleep. They’re very mild. Nothing strong.”
She took them without hesitation, swallowing them down with small sips. Jonathan studied her face for a long moment, snd she wished she could tell what he was thinking.
"You'll be fine." He said at last.
She simply nodded, too drained to speak. He stood and offered his hand. She took it, letting him lead her to the freshly made bed. He pulled the covers back and helped her settle in. Leaning in, he place a tender kiss on her head.
"Do you want me to stay?" He asked her.
And against her better judgement, she nodded.
"Alright. I'll shower and join you soon." He replied. "Go to sleep."
And everything seemed to fade away except for the fragrance of sandalwood and citrus.
