Glass broke. Screams erupted. Liam dove, pulling Julian down with him just as a bolt of purple magic slammed into the stage where they’d been standing.
“What was that?! ” Liam shouted, scrambling to his feet.
Julian’s face was grim. “An attack. And a very public one.”
They were at the Supernatural Gala, the biggest event of the year. All the important people were there: other Alpha CEOs, Omega mages, council members—even Aria Moonwhisper, the mysterious seer. Liam and Julian were meant to be showing everyone that their marriage was strong and their companies were united. But someone had other plans.
“Everyone, stay calm! ” Julian bellowed, his Alpha voice cutting through the chaos. “Security, find the attacker! ”
Liam studied the room, his emerald eyes darting from face to face. Who would do this? And why?
Suddenly, another bolt of magic shot across the room, barely missing a group of council members. People screamed again, and some started to run for the doors.
“They’re targeting the council! ” Liam realized. “Someone wants to start a war.”
“Then we can’t let them,” Julian said, his gray eyes sparkling with power. “Liam, with me.”
Together, they moved towards the center of the room, deflecting strikes as they went. Julian’s purple magic made a shield around them, while Liam’s green magic sought out the attacker.
“I see them! ” Liam shouted, pointing towards a shadowy corner. “Two mages, using dark magic.”
“Let’s go,” Julian said, and they charged into the darkness.
The fight was fierce. The dark witches were strong, and their magic was twisted and dangerous. Julian and Liam worked together, their powers combining to make a force field.
Liam felt a surge of energy, a link between him and Julian that he’d never felt before. It was like their magic was singing, working together. They started to drive the dark witches back, pushing them further into the shadows.
“They’re getting away! ” Liam shouted.
“Not if I can help it,” Julian answered.
He released a blast of Alpha magic, a pure wave of power that slammed into the dark mages. They cried out, stumbling backward.
But then, something unexpected happened. One of the dark wizards turned towards Liam, his eyes burning with hate. “You ruined everything! ” he screamed. “Now you’ll pay! ”
He raised his hand, and a bolt of dark power hurtled towards Liam. Julian was too far away to stop it. Liam braced for the hit, knowing it would hurt.
But it never came.
Instead, something else happened. A surge of power exploded from Liam, a wave of green magic so strong that it blew the dark magic apart. The force of the blast knocked the dark mage off his feet.
Liam stared at his hands, his eyes wide with shock. Where did that come from? He’d never felt power like that before.
Julian stared at Liam in wonder. "What was that?"
"I...I don't know." Liam was just as confused. "It just happened."
"It was incredible," Julian said, his voice full of awe. "You saved us both."
Before Liam could answer, the other dark mage lunged at Julian, a dagger in his hand. Liam responded without thinking. He shot forward, grabbing the mage’s arm and twisting it behind his back. The mage screamed in pain, dropping the knife.
Liam held him tight, waiting for security to arrive. He realized something else: he wasn't scared. He'd been so focused on protecting Julian, and the others around him that his fear went away.
The guards finally arrived, taking the dark mages away. The crowd started to calm down, muttering in shock and relief.
Aria Moonwhisper neared them, her silver eyes shining. "Well done, young ones," she said, her voice soft. "You have shown great strength tonight."
"Thank you, Aria," Julian said, bowing politely.
"But be warned," Aria continued. "This is just the beginning. The shadows are growing darker. And the greatest challenges are yet to come."
With that, she turned and fled into the crowd, leaving Liam and Julian alone.
"What did she mean by that?" Liam asked, feeling a shiver run down his spine.
Julian shook his head. "I don't know. But I don't like it."
They looked around at the crowd, at the faces that were now watching them with a mixture of awe and mistrust. Liam realized that everything had changed. They were no longer just two CEOs in an arranged marriage. They were heroes.
But that came at a price. Everyone was watching them. Everyone had hopes. And someone out there wanted them dead.
As they left the gala, Julian turned to Liam, his face worried. "There's something I need to tell you," he said.
Liam frowned. "What is it?"
"The dark mages," Julian said, his voice low. "I recognized them. They used to work for my father."
Liam's eyes widened. "Your father? But why would he attack us?"
"I don't know," Julian said, shaking his head. "But I'm going to find out. And if he had anything to do with this, he'll pay."
He turned and strode towards their car, his face set with purpose. Liam followed, his mind racing. What was going on? Was Senator Blackwood really behind the attack? And if so, why?
As they drove away, Liam couldn’t shake the feeling that they were headed towards a storm. The attack at the dinner was just the first thunderclap. The real storm was about to break.
And they were right in the middle of it.
Suddenly, Liam’s phone rang. It was Evelyn, his sister.
“Liam, are you okay? I saw what happened at the gala,” she said, her voice frantic.
“I’m fine, Evelyn,” Liam said, trying to comfort her. “But something’s wrong. The dark mages were tied to Senator Blackwood.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the call. Then, Evelyn spoke, her voice cold and hard. "Liam, you need to get away from Julian. Now."
"What? Why?" Liam asked, confused.
"I can't explain right now," Evelyn said. "Just trust me. Get away from him. He's not who you think he is."
"Evelyn, what are you talking about?" Liam asked.
But Evelyn had already hung up.
Liam stared at his phone, his mind spinning. What did Evelyn know? What was she hiding? And why did she want him to get away from Julian?
He looked at Julian, who was looking out the window, his face lost in thought. Was Julian really dangerous? Was he someone Liam couldn’t trust?
He didn’t know what to believe anymore.
As the car sped through the night, Liam felt more alone than ever. The attack at the gala had brought him and Julian closer together. But Evelyn’s phone call had put a wedge between them, a wedge of doubt and suspicion that threatened to destroy everything.
He didn't know who to trust, or where to turn. And he had a terrible feeling that whatever was coming next was going to change his life forever.
