Secrets in the Dark
Secrets in the Dark
The door clicked shut. Liam jumped, his heart beating. He wasn't meant to be here.
He was standing in Julian's private office, a room he’d been told was strictly offlimits. But after Evelyn’s strange phone call, Liam couldn’t shake the feeling that he needed to know more. He had to find out if Julian was hiding something.
The study was dark and quiet, filled with bookshelves and strange objects. Liam felt a shiver run down his spine. It felt like he was trespassing, entering Julian’s private thoughts. But he couldn’t turn back now.
He started to search, running his fingers along the tops of the books. Most of them were old and dusty, filled with arcane information that Liam couldn’t even begin to understand. But then, he found something that caught his eye.
It was a small, leatherbound journal, hidden behind a row of bigger books. Liam pulled it out, his hands shaking. He had a feeling this was something important.
He opened the book and started to read. The handwriting was neat and exact, clearly Julian’s. But the words were cryptic and unclear.
“Experiment 7… Omega compatibility… Soul resonance…”
Liam frowned. What was Julian writing about? What kind of project was this?
He flipped through the pages, his eyes skimming the text. He found references to “Project Soulforge,” a name that made his blood run cold. That was the name of the project Senator Blackwood had used to steal magic from Liam’s parents!
“No…” Liam whispered. “It can’t be.”
He read on, his heart beating faster and faster. He found notes about Liam’s special Omega powers, about how they could be amplified and controlled. He read about the bond between him and Julian, about how it could be used to make a powerful magical weapon.
“Julian… what have you done? ”
Liam felt a wave of nausea wash over him. Was Julian using him? Was their entire friendship just a part of some twisted experiment?
He kept reading, trying to find some explanation, some reason to believe that Julian wasn’t a monster. But the more he read, the worse it got.
He found a page with a thorough diagram, showing how to extract magic from an Omega and transfer it to an Alpha. Liam recognized the marks – they were the same ones Senator Blackwood had used on his parents.
“This is insane,” Liam said, his voice shaking. “He’s planning to steal my magic.”
He slammed the book shut, his mind reeling. He had to get out of here. He had to get away from Julian.
As he turned to leave, he bumped into something, knocking it off the shelf. It was a small, wooden box. It fell to the floor with a thud, and the lid popped open.
Inside, Liam saw a collection of crystals, each one sparkling with a different color. He recognized them instantly. They were SoulMagic crystals, the same kind Senator Blackwood had used to store stolen magic.
Liam gasped. Why did Julian have these? What was he going to do with them?
He reached out to touch one of the crystals, but then he paused. He didn’t know what kind of magic was stored inside. He didn’t know if it was risky.
But he had to know. He had to find out what Julian was hidden.
He took a deep breath and reached for the crystal. As his fingers brushed against it, a jolt of energy shot through his body. He cried out, stumbling backward.
Suddenly, the room started to spin. The crystals glowed brighter and brighter, filling the room with an eerie light. Liam felt like he was falling, sliding down a dark hole.
Then, everything went black.
When Liam opened his eyes, he was lying on the floor, his head aching. The crystals were still glowing, but the light was weaker now.
He sat up, his body shaking. He felt weak and confused, like he’d been drained of all his energy.
He looked around the room, trying to figure out what had happened. But everything looked different now. The shadows seemed darker, the air felt heavy. It was like he was seeing the world through new eyes.
Then, he noticed something that made his blood run cold.
On the wall, written in what looked like blood, was a single word:
“Traitor.”
Liam looked at the word, his heart pounding. Who wrote that? And what did it mean?
He tried to stand, but his legs were too weak. He fell back to the floor, his mind racing.
He knew one thing for sure: he was in real danger. Someone was trying to frame him. Someone wanted him dead.
And that someone was getting closer.
Suddenly, he heard a noise outside the door. Footsteps, coming closer and closer.
Liam held his breath, his body frozen with fear. He didn’t know who it was, but he knew it wasn’t good.
The door creaked open, and a person stepped into the room.
It was Julian.
He stood in the doorway, his face pale and his eyes wide with shock. He stared at Liam, then at the crystals, then at the word on the wall.
“Liam… what happened here? ” he asked, his voice trembling.
Liam wanted to tell him everything, to explain what he’d found in the book, to beg for his help. But he couldn’t talk. He was too weak, too scared.
And then, he saw something that made his blood run even colder.
In Julian’s hand, he held a knife.
A knife covered in blood.
Julian raised the knife, his eyes filled with tears. "I'm so sorry," he whispered. "I have no choice."
