Chapter 27 Pack
Chapter 27 Pack
Calyx's paws flew across the ground. She heard his paws striking the soil right behind her, following her lead as they ran through the night. Vampires were still hot on their trail, but they were at the moment, outrunning the determined creatures. They were running through the patch of forest before they hit a fairly large lake that dropped down over the edge into a waterfall. The water wasn't easy to cross due to the turbulence, but it was the best place to lose some of them.
There is a lake up ahead, she told Theodavian through mindlinking. It is pretty rough to cross, but if we do, we will lose the majority of them. Perhaps all of them, if we are lucky.
Her heart thudded in her chest, waiting to hear him in her head. It had been so long since they shared mindlinking abilities. She had trained with the Elite Guards so she was privy to fortifying the strength to speak with Theodavian and the other Guards. She hoped that she hadn't lost that ability.
Good, it'll be easier to fight if necessary with smaller numbers, his voice burst into her mind. She shivered in pleasure at the feel. She didn't understand why it gave her a rush of excitement to know they could still communicate like this. The Elite Guards are coming. They're trailing the mob. Amos says there are hundreds.
I am not surprised, she told him. Her paws continued pound against the ground and she could hear the rushing water ahead. We are here! Up ahead, Theo!
She didn't slow her run as she leaped into the lake off a boulder to plunge into the rough waters. She glanced behind her as she watched a white wolf break the surface. They swam across the lake getting caught in the rough current, but they still were making good headway to the other side. As her paws touched down on the ground, her heart soared, because they were finally in shallow waters. She once again glanced behind to see Theodavian right next to her, rubbing his nuzzle against her neck.
The vampires were here. Her eyes took in the mob closing in upon the lake. She watched as a good amount of them were being swept away towards the waterfall, but the resilient ones kept swimming towards them. Theodavian nudged her body with his head, and she understood what he was telling her to do. She took off again with him behind her and she led him deeper into the forest towards the cliffs. She figured the best way to get rid of them was to make them fall from a large height.
How far away are the others? she asked him.
Not far, he responded back. Why?
Are you prepared to fight? We need to backtrack to head back to Silverd. The sun should be rising with a couple hours, but I figured we could shave off some by fighting and pushing them of the cliffs.
She heard his agreement sound in her mind and her paws slowed as they reached the edge of the cliff. He stopped beside her as they looked over the cliff at the deep forest below. She didn't bother turning back into her human body instead opted to stay in her wolf form as did Theodavian.
There was cracking and sounds coming from behind them. She turned around, preparing herself to see what was left of mob. The strong ones would be difficult to deal with so this was why she brought them here. Even if some survived the fall, it would take them forever to find them.
I told them the plan, Caly, Theodavian whispered in her mind. Stay strong. We're with you and help is on the way.
The pounding of her heart slowed as the realization that everything was now different. She knew people had come far and wide to help her with the cause, but for once, she didn't feel alone fighting. She remembered what it felt like to fight like a pact.
As the vampires came to view, she refocused on the matter at hand. Their bright red eyes eerily glowed in the dark as they hurried towards them. She glanced over at Theodavian. His white wolf trained on the incoming vampires.
Thank you, she finally whispered into his mind.
His white wolf looked towards her and he moved forward, nuzzling his head against hers. Then he took off in a sprint toward a vampire finally close enough to attack. She watched as he flew into the air and pounced upon the creature. She immediately took off into a run and rammed right into another vampire taking it down. Brutally decapitating the creature with vicious bites to the throat and head, she immediately lunged at the next one shifting into her lycan form to use her mighty arms and claws.
Standing upright, she grabbed two vampires and sent them flying into the air off the cliff. She noticed that Theodavian had also morphed into his lycan form too. Wolves were great fighters, but their lycan forms were meant for brutal fighting. There were advantages to both forms. Blood was splattering everywhere --- on the ground, on the greenery, and on their fur. She heard the howls and roars of the Elite Guards and her heart squeezed as she knew the rest of her pact was here. She watched them descend upon the vampires.
Aiden, in his wolf form, bound towards her grabbing a vampire with his powerful jaws and sped passed her to dispose of the creature off the cliff. In his lycan form, Amos took one of the vampires that tried to reach for her and lifted him over his shoulders, moved towards the cliffside and threw the creature over it. Instead of needing to escape by running back towards Silverd while waiting for the sun to come up, she realized that vampires were almost dealt with.
Joining into the chaos, she assisted the others in completely tearing through the vampires until only they remained. They were all covered by the blood of the enemy mingled with their own blood, but they had been victorious. She heard a loud roar of victory and she knew it was Theodavian alerting everyone that they had succeeded in the blood bath. Her heart pounded as she heard a loud chorus of roars and howls answered back to him with hers included. The crowned prince of the lycans and his Elite Guards were here to stay and she couldn't help but feel relief wash over her.
For the first time in a long time, she no longer felt a chill in her body. She felt that familiar warmth. She felt like she was home.

They washed up at the shallow part of the lake. All of them had stripped themselves of their clothing and armor to cleanse themselves while a few stood watch before someone took their place so they could partake washing off the blood.
Calyx had chosen to go slightly down the lake shore, but she was not that faraway from them that they couldn't see her. She didn't even protest or was fazed when Theodavian approached her with her armor and clothes. He had already washed up and clothed with his armor on.
Thankfully, it was still dim. The sun was starting to peak through the darkness. She walked towards him, noticing the appreciation in his eyes as they traveled up and down her body. To her surprise, he helped her get dressed and she didn't dare stop him. She shivered when his lips pressed against the skin of her body before he dragged the cloth over her. Something happened tonight that drew them closer together.
Her ring shimmered, catching her eyes. It broke whatever spell that kept her entranced by all of this. In another time, she would have given into him. She would have believed in fairytales. This lycan prince was not hers.
When she stepped away from him, he must've sensed her barriers sliding into place. Perhaps, it was the stiffness of her limbs and the wariness in that tension. She watched the determination darken his features as he stared down into her eyes.
"You're still going to prove difficult, aren't you?" he growled at her.
She swallowed. "It is for the best, Theodavian. I wish you would believe me."
She started to turn away from him, but he placed his hands on her hips, forcing her to stay put. She swallowed as she saw the fury sizzling in those depths as she dared to look into his cerulean eyes.
"You should know," he whispered harshly, letting his fingers grip on her hips. "I didn't hesitate that night. I plan to mark you." Her gasp passed through her lips and he captured her chin with one of his hands. He forced her to continue to look into his eyes. "But there will be no secrets between us when I do."
With that, he released her, storming off to join the others. Her eyes swept over to them as they immediately pretended they didn't eavesdrop on their conversation.
"You shall be waiting a long time, lycan prince!" she shouted after him. "I shall never tell you my secrets!"
He didn't even turn around.
He just kept walking like she hadn't said anything in return to his claim.
She scowled at him as he went to talk to Amos. Her eyes met the curious eyes of the other lycans who were bold enough to look upon her and wear knowing looks upon their faces. She huffed, glancing down upon her ring that held all the secrets he couldn't remember. There was no possibility that he would ever discover the truth to those secrets.
