Chapter 26 Long Lost Daughter
Chapter 26 Long Lost Daughter
The ride to Amethystia would take a few days, but Dante, Seraphina, and his heralds had powered through the first day. Seraphina was currently resting in his or rather now their tent. He had suggested it and she had brightly accepted it. Her surge of joy soothed his nervousness. After their tense morning, he didn't know how she'd react to sharing his tent. Wanting to give her some space to settle in, he took the first watch, gazing up at the night sky filled with stars. It would soon be the Moon Season and he already felt the unease settling around him like a warning before a merciless storm ravaged the world with thunderous malice.
It was in his gut, permeating in his instincts. War was once again coming, waiting at the edges of the unknown. Once again, powerless to stop the pending intensify onslaught, but he would stand against the intrusion of darkness as he had done for many seasons. Perhaps he was a fool to take Seraphina as a Mate before the promising devastation, but if it had been anyone but Seraphina, he must likely would have waited like she had believed he was doing for Lady Vylot. He was a creature of pragmatism. He could not fault Seraphina for knowing him as she obviously did, but she was the exception.
He could survive her death if her life was taken, but would he truly desire to live his life without her? His answer burned through him. He never felt the way he did towards anyone yet she was the exception, because her importance in his life was entangled with his very life and being the moment he rescued her as a child. He never understood the significance then or how their roles would change. He only knew she was his to protect -- his ward.
No, he had not known then when he rescued her that she was his Mate. She was only a child struck by horrific trauma. How could he have known?
"In deep thoughts?" Lysander remarked, drawing Dante out of his reeling mind.
Instead of growling in frustration at his prying, Dante sighed, glancing over at his longtime friend. "This war shall be different. The feel of it is more sinister, more arbitrary."
"There are so many parts that need to fall in place," Lysander agreed. "Victory is not as easy to sense, but we have fared through the thick of it all these seasons, we shall make due like we always have." He chuckled. "It shall be proven to our advantage that your Mate is the best healer known to Tempest Elysium for many seasons. At least, we all shall not perish quickly."
Dante cracked a smile at that. "She will become a force I am certain."
"She has not even tapped into her fae energy fully," his friend agreed with a smirk. "I wonder what form she shall take."
He had also wondered of that. What wings did she possess? What was her actual fae heritage? He wondered if Queen Hyacinth would be able to discover more of Seraphina's birthright. He knew she was powerful. He could sense it and even got a taste of it when training her, but he could not educate and train her how to utilize her fae magic.
"She is going to be pivotal in the war," Lysander burst in, once again catching Dante's attention. "There is something very special about her. I know we are going to this impromptu visit to Amethystia, because Queen Hyacinth wishes to meet her." Dante's eyes cut his friend and his friend only chuckled. "There is no other way that we would delay our return trip back to The Great Willow Tree if it was not for royal intervention. I do know you, Dante, and how you work. You would never stray from your purpose unless it was part of the mission."
Dante could only nod his head. Yes, he was indeed a creature of habit as well. He followed his role, because it was necessary to remain on task. He was a warrior by nature. It was their path to follow the mission and complete it without digression.
"She was already important to us," Lysander said, with a small smile. "The heralds have always been protective of her, but knowing who and what she is to you now, she has become even more important to us."
"She shall be important to everyone," Dante revealed. He noted the suspicion narrow Lysander's eyes when he dropped a heavy clue, but that was all he would reveal. It was up to Queen Hyacinth to make these announcement. "I should check in on her."
Lysander only nodded his head, still pondering over his words. Dante rose to his feet and headed towards his tent. He wondered if Seraphina was resting. As he peeled back the flap of the tent, he froze as a blinding light pierced through the darkness, eclipsing the moonlight, starlight, and fire. He squeezed his eyes shut before forcing himself to open them, trying desperately to adjust to the powerful light.
He could hear his heralds stirring and rushing over. When his eyes adjusted partially to the light, he tried to seek out Seraphina only to realize the light was emanating from her. She was the source. She was that powerful light. Whispers and chants were swirling around the tent like a hum of buzzing energy, getting louder and louder until the voices were above high frequency and undiscernable. He watched as she quickly snapped a book shut and scouted back on the ground, but it did not dissipate the light generating within her. The voices did not stop. They just kept squealing at that loud frequency.
He heard voices from his heralds around him so he quickly scanned the area, noticing balls of iridescent light popping up around the temporary camp.
"The will-o'-the-wisps?" Anders gasped, startled by their appearance as they continued to manifest. "I thought they were only in legends now."
Apparently, they were not only in legend. Just like the others, he saw these floating balls of energy appearing until thousands of them blanketed the forest around them. Two of the balls zipped by him straight into the tent and two forms began to take shape. An apparition of a woman with moth wings and an elvish male floated above Seraphina. Dante watched as Seraphina gazed up at the spirits in awe. The female spirit turned to Dante and he gasped, gazing at the familiar face. The figure drifted to him, floating in front him.
"She does not know the way yet," she whispered, sadly gazing back at Seraphina. "Please protect her, Dante. Tell her to follow the wisps to return the memories we took. No child should have to remember the horrific deaths of her parents, but she is no longer a child. Please bring her back to the swamps when the time is right."
Dante swallowed, gazing into Lady Rayne's face. "I promise," he vowed with a firm nod of his head.
Lord Angelos turned to him then bowed his head in gratitude before shrinking back into a ball of energy to dart off. Lady Rayne smiled gratefully then reached up and touched the side of his cheek. Even though he just felt the warm energy against his skin, he couldn't help the sadness fall around him.
"Thank you for keeping her safe, old friend. Take care of her and cherish her as I know you shall." With that, Lady Rayne retracted back into a glowing orb before darting off and vanishing.
Soon all of the wisps vanished and Seraphina's light receded back within her. All was left to how it had been before, but it was not the same. Dante sank to his knees, trembling in the emotions that flooded through him. Lady Rayne and Lord Angelos had vanished seasons before. They had fought with them in wars and were fierce alleys to Queen Hyacinth, Lady Crystobelle, the ancient celestials, and King of the Lycans. Lord Angelos had been his best friend growing up in The Great Willow Tree.
Both the mystery of their disappearance and Seraphina's heritage was finally known. It had been his dearest friends that had been mutilated to unrecognizable that night. Seraphina was their long lost daughter.
