Chapter 90 Break the trust

Chapter 90 Break the trust

Evyths scooted back to the bed, her eyes soggy with tears.

If Valerio comes to Davendale, there would be chaos that would lead to war and this would all become her fault.

Her breath hitched, feeling the ring around her finger, overheating. Instantly, it dawned into her that the heightened heat from the ring earlier had been a sign. It must have signaled Valerio.

“No!” She fell to her knees, holding her chest.

A lie she had comfortably covered had been exposed and this could change the hands of Fate
Again.

“It explains it, the restlessness…” she thought again, washed over with regret.

Not just that, the danger in Ravencroft only meant that Davendale wasn't safe and was next. Could it be that Raven or Valerio could have written to Leon? She asked herself, piercing it all together.

Evyths rose abruptly, grabbing a cloak from the hanger as she wrapped it around her, walking out of her room. She pulled the hood over her head, taking the torch from beside the wall, adjacent to her door.

Evyths walked stealthily, making her way upstairs, the topmost floor, where the royals occupied.

Reaching the floor, two hefty enforcers like giants blocked her path, her heart sinking.

“You should not be up here,” one said, his dense body telling her off.

Evyths swallowed, “Please, tell Alpha Adler that I want to see him and oybis urgent.”

“It is late. We cannot wake the prince…” the other barked. “Leave.” He ordered, closing the distance, his gife frame formed a slim partition that would crush her.

“I just want to talk to Adler, please.”

This time, Evyths slightly her voice in case Adler could hear her. But the enforcers wouldn't let her through, threatening to hurt her if she didn't leave.

“We know you, you hurt Oakley Bo but not us,” the biggest amongst them flexed his muscles.

Evyths knew that it wasn't the time to put her pregnancy under another risk after what had happened earlier. She turned on her heel, about to leave as Adler's door creaked open.

Adler, standing half dressed with a cup of ale in his hand, darted his gaze to Evyths. Surprised by her unexpected visit.

“Let her through.” He commanded as the enforcers looked at her irritably before moving away.
Evyths scrurried towards Adler as he led her into his chamber.

Unlike the usual fragrance that she had expected to perceive, her nose caught the faint smell of fermented wine, thick smoke and mainly his body sweat.

Although the room was beautifully decorated with carvings and intricate interior, the scattered books on the ground hinted at something that piqued her interest more.

Her gaze traveled back to him, his bare chest. Evyths turned around. “Please, cover up.” She politely said. Not that she was petrified or attracted to Adler, but it naturally seemed improper to Evyths.

Even before courtesy demanded it.

He had waited to argue at first. He lazily picked a shirt and pulled it over his frame.

“What brings you here?” He demanded sternly.

“Can I look?” She asked, almost impatiently.

His eyes rolled. “Yes, Evyths.” She turned to him slowly, in case she tried to trick her. “Hours earlier, you did not want to speak with me.”

“I deeply apologize for my… rude behavior. I was…” she cleared her throat when he reached for another cup of ale.

“What?” His tone came out uninterestedly, pouring himself some ale.

“It past midnight, do you realize?” she calmly scolded.

“And you are in my chamber at an ungodly hour, goddess's avatar. I should be more worried…” he casually said as she looked away, rubbing her arm swiftly.

“I know.” She said quietly. “But I have a matter at hand that cannot wait until morning.”

Adler dropped on the couch, sipping the wine.

“What is bothering you?” She looked searchingly at him. She noticed his scruffy hair and shirt that was turned inside out.

“Nothing particularly. I just love to drink until day breaks.” He offhandedly stated. “Sleep runs from me.”

Evyths took a moment to digest his statement before continuing. “Have you invited the physician, she could—”

“Why are you here, Evyths? It doesn't… say well about you or me.” He pointed out as she nodded.

“I received a letter earlier. I believe Davendale is in danger…”

Adler scoffed, wondering how on earth she got that information from. “You possibly cannot know that, can you?”

“I have just told you, Adler.” She snapped. “While I was speaking with your father, I noticed a letter with unbroken seal on his desk—”

“Could be from anywhere.” He cut in, taking another sip..

“It is from Ravencroft, I know just enough to know their seal.” Her tone turned firmer. “I have come for something very unlikely…”

Adler shifted in his position, looking away. “I cannot fuck you. You carry Valerio's—”

Evyths tossed a pillow at him as he chuckled almost too loud, staring at her muddled expression.

“Stop playing around, Adler. This is serious …” Evyths face softened, a tight smile on her lips.

“I got you there, didn't I?”

“Totally not witty enough.” She chimed in seriously as Adler exhaled, putting away the cup, leaning forward a bit.

“What do you think it is about then?”

“I think it may be important.” Evyths muttered. “Come with me, search the letter in the drawer to find out…”

Adler raised a brow. “I know,” she said.

“You are asking for something that could land us both in trouble.” He reminded, leaning back comfortably. “Why do you need to know the content of the letter after all? It is not about you, definitely.”

She hesistated to speak, rubbing her eyes. “Just look into the letter and find out what it entails. Please…”

“Why?” He pressed.

She hesitated again, contemplating whether or not to tell Adler about the hunters in Ravencroft given that she would be wrong.

“Can you just do it?” She impatiently said.

“No. I will not.” He reciprocated in her tone.

“Adler, there could be danger and —”

“Yon are not being honest with me then.” He let out seriously. “You pushed me away earler. Now you strut back in here past midnight, ramble about a letter and then ask me to break into my father's study for something I have no fucking whiff about. If it were you, would you do it? Evyths?”

Evyths swallowed hard, her lids fluttering in guilt. Not just about the letter, Adler was also angry at how she treated him earlier.

Her gaze softened apologetically. “I am sorry. I should not have… pushed you away like that but…” she stopped.

He intensified his gaze. “What did my father say to you?”

She shook her head. “He was not being rude or—”

“Evyths!” He called firmly, his brows knitting. “Say. It.”

Evyths remained silent z regretting why she had decided to come.
Evyths rose to leave. “I- I should not be here.” Her tone dropped.

“Certainly.” He snapped with a frown, gulping the ale.

Walking to the door, someone banged the door as if they would pull it down. Startling both Evyths and Adler.

“Step out, Evyths. Now.”

That voice, she recognized it. Her heart dropped immediately, her feet felt numb, barely holding her body.
