Chapter 578 Chapter 578
The room was so quiet Blaise was afraid to breathe. The desire to lean closer to the table made her grab the counter on either side of her and stay where she was. There was enough crowding around him right now.
“Yes?”
She watched Griffin’s spine straighten, “hello, little brother.” His voice was steady.
There was a long pause. “How many times have I told you not to call me that?”
“Many.” Griffin looked amused.
“I’m actually shocked you had to balls to call me after taking off. What, do you need rescuing? Don’t like it out there in the big world?”
“Hardly. I just thought I’d see if you were missing me at all.”
“You do know I will find you and then…”
“No, you won’t.” Griffin glanced around the room, “I have the entire Shifter Alliance looking out for me.”
The pause was so long it was almost awkward. “You ran to them? You fucking coward, after everything I did to give you a normal life instead of being some freak that was ogled and…”
Griffin laughed, and Blaise couldn’t be sure if it was put on or real, “normal life? How does keeping me under guard in a sparse apartment fall into the normal category?”
“I told father you should have been treated just like the others…” The calm tone Aiden had been using was gone now.
“Your father didn’t consider your opinion important. Do you know why you inherited the businesses? Because he had no other legitimate heirs. If he had a daughter, he surely would have chosen her over you.”
Another long pause, this time motion in the background could be heard, and then a slamming door. “I will use every resource I have to hunt you down, Griffin, and when I do…”
“Did I mention my chats with the King of the Alliance? He’s a very intelligent and calm man. I have a great deal of respect for what he does.”
“You’ve been talking to them? What have you told them?” The words were hissed in a quieter tone.
Griffin rubbed his hand over his head, “not as much verbally as you’d assume,” he paused and looked at Calum when he pulled out his phone. After glancing at it, Calum nodded to Griffin. Blaise didn’t know who had messaged him, but calling Aiden must be working.
“What does that mean? Don’t use fancy talk, just say what you mean.”
Blaise couldn’t help the grin; it was clear which sibling got the brains.
“I just did. I have not had many in-depth conversations with members of the Alliance.” Griffin looked at the papers on the table. “I have jotted down many details of things I remember.”
“What things?” The sound of something crashing made Griffin look even more amused. Then there were muffled sounds like someone had covered the phone’s mouthpiece. “What have you told them, Griffin?”
Griffin shrugged, “places I’ve been, people I’ve seen, some conversations I’ve overheard.”
“I swear if you…”
“If I what?” He stood up, the chair scraping along the floor, “what are you going to do, Aiden? Lock me in a room again? Put a collar around my neck?” Griffin snarled, and Blaise’s cat moved inside her. “Do you know what happens when you stop taking that medication that was forced on me for the last fifteen years?”
“You-you shift now?”
Aiden didn’t sound so sure of himself now. “Let’s just say my bear…”
“You shift into a bear? A bear?” Other voices could be heard in the background now. Blaise hoped Illias and the other techy ones were recording it at least, so it could be played back later.
Calum gave him a thumbs up, and Blaise could only assume that meant all the pieces that had been staying so stationary this past week were now on the move.
“I have one question: why didn’t you lock me in a cage in the last five years? Father wasn’t there to stop you.”
Aiden snorted, “cages are for those that need breaking or are a threat.” He scoffed, “Dad put it in his will that you were live out your natural life without harm. You wouldn’t be alive right now if it weren't for that.”
Had his father actually cared about him? There was more commotion in the background of the call. “It sounds like you’re busy. I won’t keep you. I just wanted to call to tell you that you had better run far and fast, little brother, because I will find you, and when I do, I plan to seek retribution for your depravity. You could have stopped when our father died, but instead, you took it to the extreme and destroyed so many more lives than he ever did.” Griffin glanced at Blaise; she could see the solemn promise in his eyes. “Run, little brother.” His tone was so low that it made all the hair stand up on the back of her neck. He hung up the phone, set it on the table, and then stepped back.
The room was silent for a minute, and then Blair started clapping.
“Well done, Griffin.” The king’s voice came over the other phone. “They are moving now.”
Griffin nodded but didn’t speak. His heart was beating so fast. He’d actually done that.
“I suggest you get ready to move, Miss Morgan.”
Blaise jolted, “yes, sir.”
“I’ll message you the safe locations,” Illias said.
Blaise nodded and went over and grabbed her jacket. She needed to get her bags into the truck. When she turned, she saw Blair grip Griffin’s shoulder and nod to him. A lump formed in her throat. Griffin was accepted.
