Chapter 43 Brian Ravensbridge
Chapter 43 Brian Ravensbridge
Julian
I had barely finished renouncing my vows when a loud gasp reached me. Goosebumps spread through my body like a plague and I looked around in confusion. My heart left my body when I saw Laura's body on the floor. In a second, I jumped over the stand to Laura. Extreme panic spread through my body as I turned her face to me and her eyes were closed. "Laura!" She was the only thing that mattered in the world at that moment. Everything felt so distant to me. A searing pain filled my chest as the connection between our wolves burned stronger than because. Mackenzie jumped to my side and bent over. "Shit call Blade! Blade will know what to do!" The name Blade sounded very bitter to me but it also helped to snap me out of my panic. I remembered Laura's words when she said that she was already with someone, I knew it was Blade she was referring to. "We need to get her to the hospital!" I said as I lifted her off the floor. "My daughter!" Felicity wailed trying to get to me but Mackenzie held her back. She started whispering some things to her but my brain could no longer pick them out as every cell in my body became focused on taking Laura to the hospital. As I ran out of the hall, I saw the worry written on the audience's faces. They stood, watching with confusion to what was happening but my guards were smart enough to begin ushering them out of the hall. "Julian what are you doing?" MacKenzie's voice got to me as I got to my car. —The guard stationed there was quick to understand the situation and he ran over to us with the keys. In the few seconds it took to get the door opened, I turned to Mackenzie as her question never got off my head. "What does it look like I am doing?" I growled. "I am taking her to the fucking hospital!" "No, call Blade! It's faster!" Mackenzie insisted. "He is the one that treated her before. He would know what's wrong with her!!" Her words felt like a sledgehammer had dropped into my head and I turned to her with glowing eyes as rage filled my very soul. I lifted Laura. "No, her breathing is becoming shallower. We can't take chances staying here! She has to go to the hospital now!" I turned to the guard and snatched the keys from him. "Get James to clear all routes to the hospital! Then call them and let them know we are coming. There should be doctors ready to take her as soon as we arrive!" I roared. "Yes, sir!" The guard saluted and I got into the car. I gently placed Laura in the front seat and pulled in her belt before running to the driver's side of the car. "No! Let's wait for Blade!" Mackenzie yelled following behind me like an impossible itch. I turned to her with a burning fire in my throat and I was going to spew it all over her when my eyes caught Sarah's presence behind her. "Why are you insisting on going to the hospital, Julian!" Sarah screamed. She stood right behind us and I didn't even notice until now. "Just let Blade handle it, I'm sure there's nothing serious going on with Laura!" She hissed but my rage somehow got transfered to her. I raised my finger and pointed it to my chest as I growled. "Laura is my responsibility! She's my mate! You have no damn right to tell me what to do!" I shouted at her. Sarah gasped. "Julian, your child—" "Shut up! Laura is what matters now! If I lose her, I've lost everything! I will lose a greater part of myself!" Sarah fell silent. She stared at me in disbelief but I meant every single word I said. "And I will be doomed if I let anything happen to her." I looked back at Laura. No, this was very sensitive. She needed a specialist fast! I got into the vehicle, ignoring the protests from the two women and zoomed out of the castle grounds. I could see another vehicle follow behind me but I didn't even care who it was. All that mattered was Laura's wellbeing. I looked down at Laura and took her hand in my free one. "Please, Laura, wake up for me! Please, Laura, please, I'm sorry for everything, please. Don't leave me." I begged all the way as I drove to the hospital. My wolf wailed within me because I was slowly losing the connection I shared with her. Laura was obviously in a very critical condition. This wasn't a mere collapse. This was far serious and my heart was breaking along with the wires that held her life. As soon as we got to the hospital, Laura was immediately stretchered to the emergency room and I followed but the nurses stopped me. "Please, your grace, let us do our job. We'll let you know how everything turns out. Please." Defeated, I waited outside the room and paced back and forth in the corridor. The sound of footsteps soon filled the corridors and I looked up to find Mackenzie and Felicity running towards me. They looked into the emergency room and they knew at once what was happening. The tension went even higher as we all waited for the doctor to step out with any sort of news. My hands trembled at the thought of losing Laura. I feared it was my punishment for being stupid— for using her. I stopped pacing and stood against the wall. I prayed fervently at the Goddess to make her whole again even though I barely prayed at all. Suddenly a nurse came out of the room and I rushed to her. "What's happening? How is she doing?" I asked. The nurses looked super uncomfortable and rushed away without saying anything. A few moments later, she returned but she soon stepped out again. It was going on for ten minutes and I wanted to cry because it was scary. Mackenzie and Felicity were already breaking down and I had to be stronger, despite the fact that my connection to Laura was actually the strongest. She was my mate. If anything happened to her, it was going to take out a greater part of me. Time went by and the nurse kept going on and out to get new medicine, blankets, water and other stuff I couldn't even figure out When it got out of hand, I stopped her again. "Can you tell me what's going on inside there?" My impatience had gotten the better of me. "Sir, you are wasting time! I need to get something urgently!" "Just fucking tell me how Laura's doing! I'm going fucking crazy!" I screamed at her. "I— I can't tell you sir!" She squeaked in fear, before hurrying away. I was going to scream but my whole being suddenly froze. I felt a strange presence behind me and I turned slowly to find Blade. He stood there, with his large black oversized coat. With a few glances at Mackenzie and Felicity, he had already assessed the situation. Rage bubbled through me and I narrowed my eyes fiercely at Blade. —So much for the man she loved, coming at the wrong time. I wondered what would have happened if we had waited for him. "I heard what happened. I was at a patient's place in town. I rushed over as fast as I could." He explained. "Blade!" Mackenzie yelled and hugged him— the action only fueled my rage. "Laura is inside, the nurses aren't saying anything!" Felicity also cried to him like he was the angel here to save us all. Blade held Felicity's arms and calmed her down; "It's okay," he whispered, wiping her tears. "It's okay I'm here now. I will handle everything okay? I can't go inside, but I will talk to the specialist somehow. Very soon, we will get an update on her situation right?" He sounded very calm, it annoyed me. I clenched my fist and removed my focus on him. But he had to be foolish enough to come to me. "Why don't you go and rest? I will handle everything." My fists itched to get in contact with that stupid mouth he used to spit such foolish words. But I held back. "I refuse. I will wait here until the doctor comes out, Blade." I didn't bother masking the displeasure in my tone. "No, Julian, I'm serious I can handle this—" "Who do you think you are to tell me what to do?" I growled, glaring at him. Blade frowned. "Look Julian, this isn't the time and place for this. Let's calm down and—" "I'm not moving any fucking where Blade." I roared at him. "I am staying right here!" "Oh yeah you are moving, I can't have someone like you in this state around here." Blade clenched his jaw. He was challenging me! The fool! "If anyone is going to move—" I glared down at him. "It's going to be you, Brian Ravensbridge. Get out of here!" Blade growled at me with all his might. I did the same and glared at him. It was a matter of who made the first move now. "Please, stop!" Mackenzie yelled as she came to stand between us. She took Blade's hands and led him away while he glared at me. She threw me a disapproving glance, but I didn't care. They all left me alone in the corridor outside the emergency room and my wolf snarled in irritation. I didn't care if this was the hospital. If Blade had dared lay even a finger on me, I would have killed him. "Your Highness," someone suddenly called and I instantly snapped out of my thoughts. I turned to find the specialist, standing in front of the door. "It's good that you waited outside here," he started and I quickly closed the distance between us. My restlessness only increased with his presence. "Yes, how is she doing doctor? What is going on? What's wrong with her?" I looked beyond him inside the room but I couldn't find Laura. He made a show of adjusting his eyeglasses. "She is stable now, rest assured. But I am concerned, more like curious—" "Curious about what?" I asked. The specialist shook his head. "Follow me to my office," he said. I followed him to the office. He had numerous awards in his office but I wasn't intrigued about it at all. What mattered was Laura state of health. "What is going on, Doctor?" His hand waved at the chairs and he nodded at it; "Please have a seat, your highness." "No, tell me what's wrong." I declined, the panic within me already rising. The doctor let out a sigh and began; "I was wondering why she wasn't taking her medicines at all. In her condition, she shouldn't skip her meds..." The words jumped in my head and I blinked in confusion. Medicine? Condition? "Doctor what are you talking about? She only fell down the stairs a few days ago and she was treated. There is no condition here. What medicine are you talking about?" The doctor frowned. "She relaxed on her medication, that's why she collapsed. She can't be doing that when she is suffering from a terminal illness." The world fell apart around me and I could hear the thunders overhead. "Doctor, what terminal illness?" My own shallow breathing became too loud for my ears. "She has lung cancer, my king. Aren't you aware of that?”
