Chapter 38

Chapter 38

Mel.

"Jake!" I call out at the figure facing the other way from me.

What is he doing in Aiden's room?

And how did he get in here?

Did he learn about the werewolves?

"Why didn't you tell me?" his voice comes out as a mere whisper, but I can clearly hear him.

Thanks to my new senses.

Jake doesn't turn around. He keeps staring through the window, and I'm sure wolves are training out there.

"Tell you what, Jake?" My voice holds confusion, and he turns around to look at me.

He looks good like always but he's sad. His vibrant eyes are dull and they carry pain, which I'm surely causing.

"I'm sorry" I mumble taking a slow step towards him.

"You just left me for that guy, is it something that I did?" he too takes a step closer watching me intently.

"No, you wouldn't understand Jake" how will I explain to him that am not human like we both thought?

"That you are a werewolf?" he snaps and I gasp. How did he find out?

His eyes become glossy and he looks crushed. Jake grabs my shoulders and hangs his head low avoiding my eyes.

My heart breaks watching him this way and I feel like a terrible person. He doesn't deserve this.

"I guess you underestimated my love Mel, you being this way doesn't change how I feel about you. I love you so much and it's hurting me" he releases the tears he has been holding and I mirror his expression.

What did I do?

"You made me happy, and now my life is empty and full of pain, Mel" he lets my shoulders go and slowly lowers himself onto his knees.

"I can't do this anymore, I can't live without you, please come back babe" he pulls my waist drawing me to him.

He buries his face in my stomach and I hesitantly put my hand in his hair.

It's as soft as I remember.

I can't take him back because I love Aiden. If I knew who I was I wouldn't have started a relationship with him.

"I can't" I mumble in a cry and he instantly jerks away from me.

"He said that too. He said you never loved me and that you were just with me because you felt lonely" he yells with rage standing back on his feet.

Who told him that?

"That's not true jake" I quickly deny even though I know he's not far from the truth.

"Then why? I just want to know" his voice is back to a whisper. His eyes hold desperation and seriousness as he closely regards me.

Whichever reason I give him, it will still hurt him. But I have to give him an answer. Aiden taught me to be truthful and I can't go back to lying.

"Because werewolves have soulmates Jake, and that man happens to be mine," I say softly and he looks at me sceptically.

He chuckles sadly running his hands through his hair.

"The old man said that too, does that mean you're not coming back?" he asks almost hopefully

"Am sorry" I mumble looking away.

"Am sorry too Mel, I can't do this without you" he mumbles taking out a dagger and before I know it, Jake slices his throat and I watch in horror as his head falls separately from his body.

"No" I yell out stretching my hands to stop him but he's too far.

"No Jake" I rush to him and cradle his body but it's too late.

He's dead.

"Jake," I yell so loud waking up to find myself gasping for air and all sweaty.

Another weird dream but this time it was true.

He died, Jake died just like that.

I sniffle wiping my tears and the grief comes back. I lost him for good.

Everything we had, all the memories we shared, all went down to drain.

I should have apologised sooner.

How can I forget about him so quickly? I was so inconsiderate of his feelings.

Am sorry, please. Forgive me wherever you are Jake.

"Luna" I look up at the faces of two worried women, I recognise one as Aiden's sister but the other one is unknown to me.

"Hey, I'm Charlotte, the gamma's mate" the blonde girl introduces and I hum remembering Ace, Lily's brother.

"How is Lily?" I ask because the last time I saw her she was so broken. Something else is bothering her.

"She's still in her room" she answers with an uncertain expression and I make a point to check on her later.

I remember the pack attack.

How Athena notified me of the impending danger and told me to let my wolf take control because I didn't know how to use my powers yet.

I don't remember what happened though, I just recall pack members going on their knees for me before everything else faded away.

It's already dark outside, I must have slept for a long time.

"Where is Aiden? I ask the two women who are still watching me with pity.

They must have heard the nightmare.

" In the alpha's meeting," Jessy says sitting closer to me.

She's so beautiful and probably we have the same age.

Her black hair is shoulder length and she has grey eyes, I think we will get along just fine.

"Wasn't the meeting supposed to happen tomorrow?" I remember Aiden saying the alphas will arrive tomorrow.

"He called an emergency after what happened" she mumbles and I nod in understanding.

I need to take another shower, I need to get the sweat and tears from my body.

I get from bed and walk to the bathroom.

After a short shower, I put on my night clothes and walk back to bed. The two girls are on the couch Jessy lying down while Charlotte watches the TV.

"I will grab you something to eat," Charlotte says heading out.

That dream.

It seemed so real, I wish I could reverse time.

An uneasy feeling takes over my senses and I look around in suspicion.

I sense something is out of place but I can't put a finger on it.

'Athena' I mumble but I can't reach her.

She's always present, how come she's not being responsive?

The room starts smelling weird and I find my wolf growling cautiously.

I don't know what the smell is but it's draining my energy.

I sit on the bed and try reaching out to Aiden but the same thing with Athena happens. I feel myself growing weaker with every passing moment.

The door to our room opens and a dishevelled Lily walks in.

She looks rough like she's been crying a lot. She still has the same dirty clothes and her hair stands in all directions on her head.

I have never seen her this way before.

" Lily?" I mumble and she wordlessly walks to me.

"What's wrong?" I ask worriedly and she starts crying.

She quickly moves towards me and hugs me tight. Maybe she's just stressed.

"Everything will be fine, okay" I whisper rubbing her back gently to ease up whatever is stressing her.

"Am so sorry Mel, am sorry" she cries harder and am about to pull away to look at her when something painfully stings my neck.

Lily moves away holding a syringe and I stare at her with wide shocked eyes.

"What did you..." I don't complete my sentence because everything around me starts moving in circles.

The last thing I see before darkness engulfs me is the silhouette of a man walking toward me.
