Chapter 13
He walked into the apartment and went straight to his bedroom, ignoring Veronica sprawled out on the chair in the living room, munching on cookies. He pulled off his tie and stepped out of his clothing and headed to the bathroom. He showered and made his way to the kitchen for his diner. Veronica was a good cook and it had become an unspoken agreement in the house that she would be in charge of the cooking and to his surprise, he looked forward to her meals.
He put the meal in the microwave and headed to the dining room with the food when he was done. He scrolled through his phone as he ate. He didn't have to pretend to be polite with her as they both had nothing to say to each other. They had both fallen into an unconscious cycle of waking up, eating breakfast together in silence, going to work, back home, eating dinner separately as he came home later than she did and going back to bed whenever they felt tired without a word to each other and then repeating the cycle the next day.
Adam couldn't believe a month had flown by since the wedding. He turned as her phone rang and her giggles permeated the room. He rolled his eyes as he could guess who was on the line. He had had fantasies about his marriage life and being the next best thing to his wife but now, the only instances he heard his wife laugh was when she was on call with her best friend.
"Girl!" Veronica drawled.
Sandra giggled. "How is married life, babe?"
Veronica rolled her eyes. "Oh! Stop it. Stop acting like I got married because of flowers and romance."
Adam scoffed. Must she make it sound like she was miserable with him? Apart from the fight they had had the second day they had had the second day after their wedding, they hadn't had any more fight that would make her as miserable as she tried to project to her friend. He snorted. How would they fight when they hardly talk with each other.
Sandra scoffed. "No, you stop acting like you are in a miserable marriage."
Veronica rolled her eyes. "Why are you always on Adam's side?"
Adam chuckled and shouted to the phone. "Thank you, Sandra."
Sandra chuckled. "You are welcome, Adam. Tell him I said so, Veronica."
Veronica chuckled and rolled her eyes. "Okay, madam." She turned to Adam. "She says you are welcome."
Adam grinned. "Thanks." He focused on his meal.
Sandra continued. "Try getting more friendly with your husband. That it is a business marriage doesn't mean you have to be strangers."
"Okay, ma'am." Veronica rolled her eyes.
Adam phone rang and he smiled at seeing Matthew as the caller ID. "Good evening, Matthew."
He chuckled. "How is business?"
"Thanks for youe investment. Business is booming."
Veronica turned towards Adam as she heard Adam call her father's name. She told Sandra to let her call her back as she was curious to know what he would like to talk about with Adam. She trusted that her father was up to no good by calling Adam that late.
"Is Veronica with you?"
"Yes." Adam nodded, glancing at Veronica.
"Good. Put the phone on speaker so she can hear me."
Adam did and moved closer to Veronica. He sat beside her and they both listened to what Matthew had to say.
Matthew's voice rang out of the phone. "Is she there now?"
"Yes, dad. I am with him and listening to you."
"How is marriage, guys?" Mathew asked, grinning. He twirled a glass of wine in his hand, leaning against his massage chair and stretched his legs on a stool.
Veronica rolled her eyes. "Come on, dad. What do you expect?" She snorted. "Marriage is fine. At least, we haven't killed each other yet."
"Grandkids? How do I get what I want if the two of you insist on living like strangers?"
She gaped at his words and glanced at Adam, a secret smirk on her face. He nodded and shrugged. She nodded and cleared her throat. "I am pregnant, dad."
"What?" He roared in surprise.
She nodded, grinning, glad he wouldn't have to taunt her about getting him grandchildren. "Yes, dad."
He shouted, cheering Adam. "Sharp shooter, Adam. That's my man."
Adam blushed. He shook his head as he grinned at Veronica. "Thanks for the compliment."
Mathew chuckled. "I knew were a bad boy. Who knew you were going to get her pregnant in less than a month?"
"Actually, dad, we have been married for a year." Veronica corrected.
"How time flies." Mathew grinned.
"Why did you call? I knew you didn't call so we can tell you of my pregnancy status."
He sighed. "Remember your aunt Peggy from your mother's side?"
"Yes, I do."
"She sends her regards and apologies that she missed your wedding."
"It's no bother." Veronica replied.
"She is coming to visit the two of you in the next two days."
"What!" Both Adam and Veronica looked at each other with their mouth wide open in shock.
"She doesn't have to bother." Veronica protested.
"I told her but she insisted. She says she also has a meeting in the city and would like to use the opportunity to bond with you and get to know your husband."
"Dad!" Veronica groaned.
"I tried to warn her daughter but her mind is made up. She would be arriving at Adam's house soon. I already sent her the address."
"You did what, dad?" She moaned in despair and cursed.
He sighed. "I know it sounds weird and that is why I called to give you a heads-up. You know how adamant your aunt Peggy is."
As soon as the call was disconnected, she looked at Adam. "There's a problem. We would have to move to the same bedroom. Aunt Peggy would find it weird if we both sleep in different bedroom."
