Chapter 47 Won't Let Her Off

Chapter 47 Won't Let Her Off

As soon as Ethan said this, the hospital room fell into a brief silence.

Arthur's brow furrowed tightly, and when he spoke again, there was a worry in his tone that even he hadn't noticed: "Are you really sick?"

"What else?"

Beatrice was speechless. She couldn't understand just how boring Arthur thought she was: "Why else would I be wearing a hospital gown? To copy Jennifer? I'm not that bored!"

Beatrice's question left Arthur with no response. After all, he had just really thought that Beatrice was putting on this act because Jennifer had been hospitalized after her suicide attempt.

After all, Jennifer had just been admitted, Sloane had also been sent here, and she happened to show up in a hospital gown—at the same hospital!

However, seeing that he had truly misunderstood Beatrice, Arthur rarely softened his attitude toward her, the way he would when coaxing Jennifer.

"Sorry, I just thought this was all too much of a coincidence. I didn't know you were actually sick."

"A coincidence?" Beatrice laughed in anger: "I also find it a coincidence that we're at the same hospital. No, actually, I'd call it bad luck."

Jennifer couldn't take it anymore: "Beatrice! Arthur just hopes you can spare some time to be with Sloane. Even if there was a misunderstanding, why do you have to be so harsh?"

Beatrice didn't respond. Ethan, standing nearby, let out a cold laugh: "But I see Sloane isn't lacking care. When I brought Beatrice to the hospital, I happened to pass by this room and thought you were all one family."

Ethan wasn't the type to meddle in others' business, but Arthur and Jennifer were really going too far. He couldn't just stand by.

Jennifer was furious: "This is the Capulet Family's business. Why are you, an outsider, butting in?"

"I'm an outsider, so what about you?"

Ethan's words left Jennifer speechless, her face flushing red. She wanted to say more but was coldly interrupted by Arthur.

"Enough! Thank you, Mr. Hughes, for bringing Beatrice to the hospital this time. But since Mr. Hughes also knows this is our family matter, please don't interfere anymore!"

Arthur's voice was cold, and if you listened carefully, there was even a hint of sourness in it.

No matter what, Beatrice was still Arthur's wife. When something happened, she was brought to the hospital by another man—how did that look?

However, since this was his oversight, he couldn't say much.

After both Ethan and Jennifer quieted down, Arthur's cold gaze fell on Beatrice.

"What have you been so busy with lately? Busy enough to collapse?"

"That's my own business."

Actually, telling Arthur wouldn't matter, but she just couldn't be bothered to talk to him much these days.

Arthur was silent for a moment: "Whatever you're busy with now, how much does it pay? I'll pay you ten times that. Come back and take care of Sloane, just like before."

As soon as he said this, Jennifer's face instantly darkened.

From what Arthur was saying, it seemed like he wasn't planning to divorce Beatrice after all?

Beatrice must be thrilled right now! Jennifer thought angrily, while Beatrice laughed in frustration: "Arthur, do you really think that when I revolved around you and Sloane before, it was for your money?"

"That's not what I meant. I just think you're working hard either way, so instead of exhausting yourself to the point of collapse, wouldn't it be better to come home?"

What Arthur didn't say was that he was somewhat repulsed by the men appearing around her—whether it was Henry before, or Ethan now, or any other men.

The old Beatrice was ordinary and unremarkable, but reassuring. It felt like no matter where he went or how far, she would always be home when he looked back.

But the current Beatrice made Arthur feel like she was gradually slipping from his control, from his life. This feeling inexplicably made him feel anxious and uneasy.

Beatrice took a deep breath, barely suppressing her anger.

She had thought that by now, Arthur could no longer affect her emotions.

"Arthur, not everything can be measured with money. To me, my career is more valuable than the money you give me."

When she chose to return to family life back then, it was because Arthur and Sloane were more important to her than the chemistry she loved.

The feelings she considered so precious turned out, in Arthur's eyes, to be about his money, because she was only fit to be a housewife.

Looking at Arthur, who was slightly stunned, Beatrice smiled bitterly: "If you really think being a housewife is so great, why don't you have Jennifer quit her job to take care of you and Sloane? Can't you afford to support her?"

The hospital room fell into a brief silence. Then Sloane, lying in the hospital bed, suddenly burst into tears.

Although she didn't understand many of the complex things between the adults, from Arthur and Beatrice's argument, she could tell that Beatrice wasn't planning to come back.

"Mom, don't you want me anymore?"

Arthur's face darkened further: "Beatrice, do you know how much harm you're causing Sloane?"

Jennifer stepped forward and hugged Sloane with fake concern, coaxing her gently: "Sloane, don't cry. You still have me."

Seeing this, Beatrice suppressed her last bit of softness and let out a cold laugh: "I think it's more important that you first teach Sloane who her real mother is."

With that, Beatrice turned and left the room.

Ethan looked deeply at Arthur: "I've heard that when a father has an affair, it affects the child even more, especially when you don't even try to hide it from the child."

Arthur's face completely darkened: "Mr. Hughes, I'm letting it slide this time because you brought Beatrice to the hospital. If you keep talking nonsense, I won't let it go!"

He hadn't even questioned the relationship between Ethan and Beatrice, yet Ethan dared to spread rumors about him and Jennifer.

Seeing that Arthur still hadn't realized his mistake, Ethan looked at him helplessly: "I can't be bothered with your messy affairs. I just hope Beatrice achieves great things in chemistry and leaves you all far behind."

With that, Ethan turned and left the room.

Jennifer knew Ethan was referring to her and couldn't help trembling with anger.

She had always believed she far surpassed Beatrice in her career, but one blow after another made her clearly realize she was no match for Beatrice.

This sense of being far surpassed by Beatrice nearly drove her to collapse. But thinking of what Melissa had promised her, Jennifer suddenly calmed down, a cold smile crossing her eyes.

If Beatrice dared to go against her, Jennifer wouldn't let her off!
