Chapter 41 I Can Fulfill Them
Chapter 41 I Can Fulfill Them
The moment Jennifer saw Beatrice and Sloane, her reaction was pretty much the same as Arthur's - first disbelief, then her face darkened when she realized she'd been tricked.
Right now, Sloane was still sitting in Beatrice's lap. When she saw Jennifer arrive, she called out "Jennifer," but unlike before, she didn't toss Beatrice aside and happily throw herself into Jennifer's arms.
Watching Sloane acting all sweet with Beatrice, Jennifer found the scene strangely irritating.
She'd actually been a bit worried when Arthur told her Sloane had run off, only to find out Sloane had lied to help that bitch Beatrice trick Arthur into coming back!
Sloane used to only do this kind of thing for her. Jennifer felt an indescribable jealousy, and her gaze toward Beatrice grew colder.
"Beatrice, long time no see. Last time I saw you, you were still fighting with Arthur. Pretty surprising to see you here today."
"Has it really been that long?" Facing Jennifer's passive-aggressive tone, Beatrice smiled faintly and shot back: "Didn't we just see each other at the conference? When your proposal got beaten by mine? Forgot already?"
Beatrice's casual remark made Jennifer's expression twist with anger.
"I'm definitely no match for you - after all, I could never teach my daughter to lie and trick people."
As soon as Jennifer finished speaking, Marshall struck his cane hard against the floor several times, cutting her off coldly: "I'm the one who asked Beatrice to come back today. I'm the one who called Arthur and said Sloane had run off. Miss Rivera, do you have a problem with that?"
The moment Marshall spoke, Jennifer's face changed: "Please don't misunderstand, that's not what I meant. I just heard Sloane had run off and got a bit anxious, wanted to help Arthur find her quickly. After all, Sloane and Arthur are usually pretty close to me, they're both very important to me, so I was just a bit surprised to see Sloane with Beatrice."
The implication was clear - even though she wasn't yet part of the Capulet Family, she was already an essential presence to Arthur and Sloane.
Seeing Jennifer so eager to claim her territory, Beatrice didn't hold back: "Some things, some people - no matter how close you get to them, they're just not meant for you. Like chemistry. Like Arthur and Sloane."
Jennifer's expression changed instantly: "Beatrice, what do you mean by that?"
"It means you're not good enough." Facing Jennifer's repeated provocations, Beatrice didn't spare her feelings this time.
Seeing Beatrice speak so harshly to Jennifer, Sloane felt restless.
Just as she was about to step forward and defend Jennifer like she used to, the conversation she'd overheard from the nanny suddenly flashed through her mind, and for once, she held back.
But Arthur couldn't take it anymore. When he first saw Beatrice, even though he realized he'd been tricked, he'd actually felt a bit happy inside. But now she was being so mean.
He pulled Jennifer, whose eyes were red and who looked as pitiful as a little white rabbit, behind him.
"Beatrice, Jennifer was just being nice. Don't go too far!"
Before Beatrice could respond, Marshall stepped in front of her, looking coldly at Arthur: "You're the one going too far! Why are you yelling at Beatrice because of Jennifer?"
Facing Marshall, Arthur was already at a disadvantage in terms of status.
Arthur rubbed his forehead helplessly: "Grandpa, this is between me and her."
"Your business is the Capulet Family's business. Today is a Capulet Family dinner. Jennifer's surprised to see Beatrice here? Well, I'm surprised to see her! Didn't I tell you not to bring just anyone home? This house doesn't welcome her!"
Arthur was about to say something when Jennifer tugged at his sleeve.
"Arthur, don't fight with Mr. Capulet because of me."
Jennifer was already in tears, but she'd calmed down.
Her replacing Beatrice as Mrs. Capulet was just a matter of time. Right now, the key wasn't to compete with Beatrice, but to make a good impression on Marshall.
After all, if Marshall didn't approve of her, even if Arthur loved her, getting married would be a big hassle.
Besides, Marshall was old and wouldn't live much longer. Even for the sake of the huge inheritance he'd leave behind, she had to endure this!
With that thought, Jennifer suppressed her anger, stepped forward with red eyes, and said meekly: "I'm sorry, Mr. Marshall Capulet. I was just too worried about Sloane. Now that Sloane's okay, I'm relieved. I'll leave now."
Marshall narrowed his eyes, looking disgusted: "Stop pretending. I've seen plenty of people. I can tell what you're thinking with one look."
Jennifer felt a bit guilty under Marshall's gaze: "What?"
"You're thinking about my inheritance! What else?" Marshall snorted coldly: "Don't think that if you put up with things now, it'll be yours later. I'd rather donate it than give it to you!"
Having her thoughts exposed, Jennifer was both shocked and angry, trembling uncontrollably: "How can you think that of me?"
Marshall waved his hand impatiently: "If you're leaving, leave. Stop putting on an act here."
Jennifer couldn't hold back her hurt feelings anymore and ran out with red eyes.
Arthur couldn't stand it anymore: "Grandpa, Jennifer meant well. Why did you have to be so harsh?"
With that, he started to follow her out.
Seeing this, Sloane wanted to chase after Arthur too, but Marshall looked over coldly: "Sloane, have you already forgotten what you told me this afternoon?"
Sloane thought of something and held herself back.
Beatrice was actually a bit surprised. In the past, Sloane would have rushed out to comfort Jennifer without a second thought.
Though she didn't know what had happened, seeing Sloane make this change made Beatrice feel really pleased.
But it looked like Arthur wouldn't be staying for dinner at the estate tonight.
Marshall let out a heavy sigh too: "Beatrice, don't take it to heart. I'll find a chance to teach him a proper lesson."
Beatrice smiled faintly: "I won't."
Sloane's big change today was already a pleasant surprise for her. As for Arthur, she'd given up on him long ago.
Looking at Marshall, who was still trying to bring her and Arthur together, Beatrice felt that even if she didn't tell Marshall about the divorce right now, she should at least help him gradually accept the fact that there was no feeling left between her and Arthur.
After all, if Arthur really did marry Jennifer someday, she was afraid Marshall would have an even harder time accepting it then.
With that thought, Beatrice smiled: "Grandpa, I'm really fine. Actually, I think Miss Rivera is pretty good. If Arthur really likes her, I can let them be together."
The moment Beatrice finished speaking, Arthur, who had turned back, cut her off coldly: "Beatrice, what nonsense are you telling Grandpa?"
