Chapter 129 This Person is Particularly Pale
Chapter 129 This Person is Particularly Pale
Indeed, there was something off about the cigarettes.
The ones Ralph handed out were legit.
After all, his dad, Anson Torres, had some serious clout and could get his hands on the best stuff in Skyhaven.
But Dennis had someone mess with them.
They spiked the cigarettes with drugs.
The dosage was just right—not too much, not too little.
Someone had tested them, and apart from a richer, more aromatic taste, there was no noticeable difference.
However, occasionally, there would be a pack with a slightly stronger taste.
These stronger cigarettes were always in the middle of the pack.
The initial cigarettes would build a dependency, and by the time you reached the middle, you'd be hooked.
Kenneth and his crew were truly ruthless.
If Benedict became an addict, it would be disastrous.
Different social classes never truly have friends.
These three guys always looked down on Benedict, hated him, and wanted to ruin him.
They even had plans for Eugene, but that was for later.
Right now, their target was Benedict.
Benedict was driving.
In the passenger seat were two packs of good cigarettes and two property deeds, and he was in a great mood.
Benedict used to lose cars, money, and houses in races.
Now, he had won everything back.
And it was worth far more than before.
Reflecting on all the changes, he felt very satisfied.
He even considered whether he should start looking for Camilla.
His fiancée from before his rebirth should still be in Newport, probably still in high school.
She would be around fifteen or sixteen, right?
Newport was a big place, so finding her would be a bit challenging.
After all, Camilla rarely talked about her childhood, almost as if it was taboo.
Benedict never pressed her for details.
After all, everyone has their privacy.
But starting a new life and getting to know Camilla better wouldn't be a bad idea, right?
However, his family had just started to get along.
If he suddenly found a young girl like Camilla, wouldn't that be inappropriate?
What if it got out? How would he explain it?
Benedict found it a bit troublesome.
Handling it personally didn't seem realistic.
He needed someone reliable to handle it discreetly.
Driving to the supermarket, he planned to buy some good food, pick up Susie from school, and then head home to make dinner.
With a luxurious house now, it was time to celebrate.
But the moving plans would wait until Bella returned.
The villa would remain a secret for now.
On the way, his tablet pinged with an email notification.
He opened the email and read it.
Earlier that day, he had asked Francis to have the Veterans Affairs office check Albert's records.
Looking at the information, Benedict nodded in satisfaction.
After buying groceries and heading to pick up Susie from school, Albert called.
Something up?
He answered.
"Albert, thanks for your hard work these past few days."
"Mr. Capulet, no need to be so formal. There's something I need to tell you."
"Go ahead, I'm listening."
"Lately, some small-time directors have been pestering Bella, trying to sign her, package her, get her to sing, act in movies and TV shows, saying she'd be a big star. They claim she'd be a huge hit."
Benedict chuckled, "Bella is stunning, it's no surprise she caught their eye. They didn't do anything inappropriate, did they?"
"A few had impure motives. But I threatened them a bit, and they backed off. Those who didn't take the hint, I wasn't so polite with."
"Thanks. The entertainment industry is indeed messy. But Imperial is a big place, full of all sorts. Try to avoid unnecessary conflicts."
"Understood. I've been keeping a low profile. Bella doesn't even know I'm around."
"Thanks! Anything else?"
Albert said, "Today, a rather striking man showed up. He was very pale, even paler than a woman, quite handsome. His attire was very tasteful. Bella seemed to know him, called him David. At the time…"
Albert hesitated, finding it hard to continue.
Benedict's heart skipped a beat. From the memories of his body's previous owner, he knew this David.
But he calmly said, "What happened? Just tell me."
"I saw Bella almost in tears, but she held them back. She nearly ran to him. David seemed a bit emotional too, but he composed himself. After all, it was a fashion trade show, lots of people around. They chatted briefly, then David left, inviting Bella to dinner after work. Mr. Capulet, I feel…"
Albert's laugh was a bit bitter.
Benedict nodded, "I get it. You think Bella and David had a past? And now I might be at risk of being cheated on."
"Exactly! Their interaction seemed off. I'm genuinely worried that…"
He trailed off.
"Alright, Albert, thanks for letting me know. What do you plan to do next?"
"Sigh, I'm not sure. Given your and Bella's rocky past, and David being her ex, I thought I'd ask for your opinion."
"Here's the plan, Albert. You're a retired special ops scout, right? You should know how to tail someone. Use your skills. I want to know what happens at their dinner, and what follows. Ideally, get video and audio. Can you do that?"
"Mr. Capulet, how did you know about my past?"
"I had a friend look into it. You're a decorated veteran. Being a security chief is beneath you. Use your skills, you'll excel. There's still time, go buy some equipment. Send me your account details, I'll transfer the money."
"Mr. Capulet, that's not necessary. I can cover it."
"No arguments, or our cooperation ends. As Bella's husband, I can ensure you never see her again."
Albert relented.
He quickly sent his account details.
Benedict transferred $100,000, noting: Use as needed, contact me if it's not enough.
Albert was stunned.
Benedict was willing to spend so much for Bella.
How could he compete?
How did this former wastrel suddenly have so much money?
Albert tried calling Benedict to say it was too much.
But Benedict didn't answer.
Albert was filled with mixed emotions.
Benedict's image in his mind had changed.
He had matured, become steady, no longer wasted words, and genuinely cared for Bella.
With that, Albert wanted to do a good job for him, though he felt a twinge of jealousy.
He quickly left his covert position and headed to Imperial's largest electronics store to buy equipment.
He knew the place well, having shopped there during his military days.
He knew where to find the best surveillance gear.
After spending nearly $50,000 on equipment, Albert realized a serious problem.
