Chapter 181: The False Summit
Chapter 181: The False Summit
The sensation of crossing between realms never felt natural.
For a moment there was no ground beneath their feet—only light and pressure twisting around them like a living current. Sound disappeared. Direction lost meaning. Even time seemed to stretch into something unrecognizable.
Then the world returned.
Ryan Foster’s boots struck solid ground first.
He steadied himself immediately, his warrior instincts already alert as his eyes scanned the unfamiliar landscape.
The Minotaur Realm was nothing like Earth.
A crimson sky stretched endlessly above them, streaked with dark clouds that moved slowly across the horizon. The air carried a faint metallic scent, and the distant mountains looked jagged and enormous, their black stone ridges rising like the horns of some ancient beast.
Massive stone pillars lined the wide platform where the portal had deposited them.
The architecture was unmistakably Minotaur.
Everything was large.
Built for beings whose natural form towered over ordinary men.
Ryan let out a quiet whistle.
“Well… this place certainly doesn’t hide what it is.”
Thomas Kane-Barot stepped out of the portal next, his boots landing beside Ryan.
He straightened slowly, studying the towering structures surrounding them.
“Their realm has always reflected their nature.”
“Intimidating?”
“Direct.”
Priest Mayi and Deven emerged behind them, followed finally by Kenneth Paige XII.
The portal shimmered briefly before sealing itself again behind them, leaving only the enormous stone archway standing silent against the red sky.
For a moment the delegation stood alone.
Then heavy footsteps echoed across the platform.
From the shadow of the pillars ahead, a group of figures approached.
They appeared human at first glance.
Tall men wearing dark ceremonial armor, each bearing the curved horn insignia of the Minotaur clans.
But there was something unmistakably powerful about their presence.
The warriors stopped several paces away.
The one at the center stepped forward.
His voice was deep and steady.
“Welcome to the Realm of Kharvath.”
Ryan crossed his arms casually.
“Always nice to feel welcome.”
The warrior studied them carefully before inclining his head.
“I am General Varok, commander of the High Warlord’s guard.”
Kenneth stepped forward, his posture calm but unmistakably authoritative.
“I am Kenneth Paige the Twelfth, Leo of the Western Kingdom.”
He gestured slightly toward the others.
“Ryan Foster, Leo of the Northern Kingdom. Thomas Kane-Barot, King of the Eastern Kingdom. Priest Mayi of Badosa, and Deven Paige, second in command of the Western Kingdom.”
Varok’s sharp gaze moved between them.
Then he nodded once.
“The High Warlord is honored that the rulers of the Lion Kingdoms accepted his invitation.”
Ryan raised an eyebrow slightly.
“Honored, huh?”
Thomas shot him a quiet look.
Ryan shrugged.
“Just confirming the tone.”
Varok ignored the comment.
“This way.”
He turned and began walking toward the enormous structure that stood beyond the pillars.
The building was immense.
Carved directly into the dark stone mountainside, it resembled a fortress more than a palace. Massive doors stood open at its entrance, guarded by two towering Minotaur statues.
Ryan glanced toward Kenneth as they walked.
“They certainly enjoy dramatic entrances.”
Kenneth answered quietly.
“Warrior cultures often do.”
They entered the fortress hall moments later.
Inside, the chamber expanded into a vast arena-like space. Stone columns rose toward a ceiling so high it vanished into shadow. Torches burned along the walls, their flames casting restless orange light across the chamber.
At the far end stood a circular stone table.
Several Minotaur leaders already waited there.
Their human forms wore ceremonial armor adorned with bronze horns and heavy cloaks.
But their presence carried the unmistakable aura of powerful shapeshifters.
Varok stopped several steps away from the table.
“The High Warlord will arrive shortly.”
Ryan looked around the chamber slowly.
“Interesting.”
Thomas followed his gaze.
“You notice it too.”
Kenneth nodded slightly.
“Yes.”
Priest Mayi remained silent beside them, but his expression had grown more serious.
Ryan leaned slightly closer to Kenneth.
“Is it just me…”
He lowered his voice.
“…or does this summit feel unusually small?”
Kenneth’s eyes moved across the chamber.
Three Minotaur leaders sat at the table.
Only three.
For a gathering supposedly meant to unite realms, the absence of additional representatives was noticeable.
Thomas spoke calmly.
“I expected more clan leaders.”
Varok’s voice answered from ahead of them.
“The High Warlord represents them.”
Ryan murmured quietly,
“Convenient.”
Deven stepped slightly closer to Kenneth.
”Big brother?”
Kenneth nodded faintly.
“I see it.”
The fortress hall was large.
But strangely empty.
Too empty.
Priest Mayi suddenly spoke.
“The energy here is wrong.”
Ryan glanced toward him.
“That’s not comforting.”
Mayi looked toward the far end of the chamber.
“The spiritual balance of this place feels… distorted.”
Before anyone could respond, the massive doors behind the stone table slowly opened.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the chamber.
A towering figure entered.
Even in human form, the High Warlord’s size was impressive.
His shoulders were broad enough to rival a fully shifted werelion, and two curved horn markings had been etched directly into the bronze armor covering his chest.
His eyes burned with cold intelligence.
Varok bowed his head immediately.
“High Warlord.”
The Minotaur leader approached the table slowly.
His gaze moved across the delegation with careful interest.
“So.”
His voice carried easily through the hall.
“The Lion Kingdoms accepted my invitation.”
Kenneth stepped forward.
“We did.”
The High Warlord smiled faintly.
“I had wondered whether pride would prevent such wisdom.”
Ryan smirked slightly.
“Pride usually waits until after the introductions.”
The Minotaur leader’s gaze shifted toward him.
“And you must be the Northern Leo.”
Ryan gave a polite bow of his head.
“Guilty.”
The High Warlord studied the three rulers carefully.
Then he gestured toward the stone table.
“Please.”
Kenneth remained standing.
“Before we begin…”
His voice was calm but firm.
“I must ask a question.”
The Minotaur leader tilted his head slightly.
“Oh?”
Kenneth’s gaze moved around the chamber.
“You described this gathering as a summit between our peoples.”
His eyes returned to the High Warlord.
“Yet I see no representatives from the other Minotaur clans.”
For a brief moment, silence filled the chamber.
Then the High Warlord smiled again.
But this time the expression carried something darker.
“That,” he said slowly…
“…is because this is not the summit.”
Ryan’s posture shifted instantly.
Thomas’s hand moved subtly closer to the hilt of his weapon.
Kenneth’s eyes narrowed slightly.
The High Warlord stepped forward.
“You see…”
His voice echoed softly across the chamber.
“The real summit begins once the Lion Kingdoms can no longer leave.”
Behind them—
The massive fortress doors slammed shut.
And somewhere deep beneath the stone floor of the hall…
Ancient machinery began to awaken.
