What!
What!
MARK'S POV
As I stepped into Mr. Holland's office, my gaze locked onto Gideon's, and I could feel the tension in the air. Mr. Holland facilitated the introduction, and I shook Gideon's hand, trying to keep my emotions in check.
"The pleasure is mine, Gideon," I said, my voice measured.
But beneath the surface, my mind was racing with questions. What connection did Mr. Holland have with Gideon? Why was he here in his office? What kind of friendship were they keeping?
Mr. Holland's voice boomed through the room, "Mark, show Gideon around and get him to see how we operate here."
Gideon's smile was charming, but I could sense a hint of mischief behind it. "I would be delighted," he said.
As Mr. Holland departed, leaving us alone in the office, I felt a sense of unease settle in. I knew I had to tread carefully around Gideon, and I made a mental note to navigate the complex landscape of our workplace with caution and precision.
I accepted the task without argument, but Gideon's question caught me off guard. "So, what's the way out?" he asked, and I ignored it, pretending I didn't hear him.
Instead, I asked a question of my own, my voice firm but laced with curiosity. "Why are you here, Gideon?"
Gideon's laughter was smooth, but I could sense a hidden message behind it. "I'm just here to make friends, Mark," he said, his eyes glinting with amusement.
But I knew better. There was more to his presence than met the eye, and I was determined to uncover the truth.
As I stood face-to-face with Gideon, his eyes sparkled with intrigue, and my instincts screamed warning signals. But I pushed them aside, determined to see this through.
"Let's focus on what Mr. Holland asked me to do for you," I said, my voice steady.
Gideon's smile was gracious, but his eyes gleamed with amusement. "I think we'll have plenty of time for that," he responded, his voice dripping with an undercurrent of menace.
My eyes locked onto Gideon's, my gaze piercing. "I know what you're doing, Gideon," I said directly, my voice low and even. "And I'm warning you to stop."
Gideon's smile faltered for a moment before he regained his composure. "I'm not sure what you're talking about, Mark," he said, his voice laced with innocence and suspicion.
My expression remained unyielding. "Don't play games with me, Gideon. I know about the manipulation. I know about what you did to Paul. I know you're behind all the atrocities that Mr. George, my stepfather, was doing before he died. You're using people for your own gain, and it's going to stop."
Gideon's eyes narrowed, his gaze intensifying. "And you think you can stop me, Mark? You think you have the power to take me down?"
My jaw clenched, determination evident. "I won't back down, Gideon. Even if you know Mr. Holland, I will expose you for what you are, and I will make sure you face the consequences of your actions."
Gideon's laughter was cold and mirthless. "You're no match for me, Mark. I'll build an empire, and you're just a tiny obstacle in my way. You'll be crushed, just like everyone else who dares to stand in my way."
"How dare you threaten me?" I said, my voice firm. "You know I could arrest you right away."
Gideon burst into loud laughter. "You think you could do that? You should have done it in front of your boss, who's my friend. You don't dare raise your hand at me and not get it cut down."
My expression remained resolute. "We'll see about that, Gideon. I'm not afraid of you, and I won't back down. You're going down, just like your brother, and I will make sure of it."
The air was thick with tension as we faced each other, the outcome of our confrontation hanging in the balance. It was clear that this was just the beginning of a difficult and threatening situation for both of us.
As Mr. Holland stepped into the office, his voice was firm and commanding. "Mark, I want you to drop the case against Wildheart Oil Company immediately."
He handed me a file, his expression unyielding. "This is the file. I've already reviewed it while you were busy introducing the office and department to his friend Gideon."
I felt a surge of surprise and concern. "Sir, I don't understand. We've uncovered some disturbing evidence of wrongdoing by Gideon and his company. I believe we have a responsibility to pursue this further."
Mr. Holland's face remained unyielding. "I don't pay you to think, Mark. I pay you to follow orders. My order is for you to drop this case now."
My voice rose in frustration. "But sir, this is a matter of great importance. The public has a right to know about the shady dealings of Wildheart Oil Company and Gideon. He's a master manipulator who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. I'm not scared to see it in his face."
Mr. Holland's expression turned cold. "Mark, you're not listening. I said drop the case. If you don't, I'll have no choice but to take disciplinary action. Do I make myself clear?"
As he spoke, I couldn't help but wonder if Mr. Holland and Gideon were friends or colleagues in these atrocities. Was Mr. Holland helping Gideon or backing him in some way? I kept these thoughts to myself, observing Gideon, who was pretending not to be present in the office, looking sideways instead of gazing directly at us.
My face set in a determined expression, I replied, "Yes, sir, you make yourself clear. But I'm not sure I can do this. We need to go deeper into this case. I'm almost there."
However, Mr. Holland wasn't willing to listen. "Mark, I said drop the case. That's all I want to see you for today. Just drop it."
He stretched his hand forward, pointing to the white file with the name White Art Company Limited on it. "The file is no longer on your table. It's with me now."
I hesitated, knowing that Mr. Holland wasn't going to change his mind. "Yes, sir, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with this decision."
My face was a mask of compliance, but my eyes betrayed a different story. I bowed curtly at Mr. Holland, pretending to acquiesce to his demands.
"Yes, sir, I will drop the case as you have ordered," I said, trying to keep my tone neutral.
But as soon as I left Mr. Holland's office, my expression changed. A surge of determination and resolve coursed through me. I was more convinced than ever that I had to see this case through to the end.
I made my way back to my office, my mind racing with strategies and plans. I knew I had to be careful, as Mr. Holland was watching me closely. But I also knew that I couldn't let Gideon Wildheart get away with his wrongdoing.
What about Juliet? What about Mr. Jones, my mom, Mia, Camara, and the likes of all my friends and family? They weren't safe if Gideon was still after them for revenge.
As I sat down at my desk, I began to work on my next move. I knew I had to gather more evidence to build a strong case against Wildheart Oil Company. I started making phone calls, contacting sources and informants, gathering information.
Meanwhile, I made sure to cover my tracks, making it seem like I was indeed dropping the case. I sent a memo to Mr. Holland confirming that I was closing the investigation.
As I watched him receive the memo, I could see his eyes close with a quick smile, and a faint laughter echoed from his office. I gazed directly at the transparent mirror of his office, opposite mine, and continued to work tirelessly, not giving up on what Mr. Holland had said.
I knew he was trying to cover everything under the carpet, but I was ready to move the carpet up and dig out every conspiracy, every atrocity, every secret behind their activities.
As I worked, I couldn't help but think of Camara, who hadn't gotten back to me since she went undercover at Wildheart Oil Company. She was my best option right now.
"I need to hear from her," I whispered to myself.
I was getting closer and closer to the truth, and Mr. Holland had just stretched everything to the limit. I could feel my bones aching from anger, but I was still determined to bring Gideon Wildheart to justice, no matter what it took.
The game was still on, and I was ready to play.
I picked up my phone and dialed Mr. Jones' number, my mind racing with the implications of my discovery. When he finally answered, I took a deep breath and began to speak.
"Mr. Jones, I need to inform you of something that I think is crucial to our investigation," I said, my voice serious.
"What is it, Mark?" he replied, his tone curious.
"I think Mr. Holland, my boss, may be involved in the atrocities committed by Gideon through his company," I said, my voice spilling out quickly.
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, I wondered if he had lost the connection or if there was something going on. I overheard faint voices in the background at the receiving end.
"Hello?" I said, trying to chuck him back to reality.
Mr. Jones spoke, his voice measured. "Sorry, Mark, I had to attend to a brief issue here. What makes you think that?"
I took a deep breath and recounted my conversation with Mr. Holland, including his order to drop the case against Wildheart Oil Company. I also shared my suspicions about Mr. Holland's motives and the possibility that he may be working with Gideon.
Mr. Jones listened attentively, asking occasional questions to clarify my concerns. When I finally finished speaking, there was another pause.
"I see," Mr. Jones said finally. "This changes things significantly. We need to investigate Mr. Holland's involvement and determine the extent of his role in this scandal."
I felt a sense of relief wash over me. I had been worried about going over Mr. Holland's head, but now I knew that I had made the right decision.
"I'll continue to gather evidence and build the case against Wildheart Oil Company and anyone else who is involved," I said.
"And by anyone else, you mean Mr. Holland?" Mr. Jones asked immediately.
"Yes, Mr. Jones. That's what I meant. I mean Mr. Holland and any other person who is connected to you," I replied.
Mr. Jones was firm over the phone. "When you get to the bottom of this, Mark, I promise you that I will not let anything happen to you or my daughter," he declared sharply.
