Chapter 54 54
Aspen
DAY TWENTY EIGHT
Our trip came to an abrupt end. I did not step out of my room throughout that day and the next day, a knock came on my door. I had initially thought that it was Killian. But it was not him. Instead, it was Claire. She told me that Killian was out and I was to pack and bags and get ready before he returned. We were leaving.
She apologized for what happened with Alexandre. I got ready and about an hour later, Claire came back to the room to tell me that Killian was already waiting. She helped me with my bags. I was returning to New York with more bags because of the things that I bought. She led me outside the penthouse and a car was already waiting.
Killian was in the car and he did not spare one glance at me even after I got in. Up until we arrived at the airport, he did not look at me and I refrained from doing so as well and just stared outside the window. I was actually going to miss Paris a lot. It was a fun time in the city and I actually wished that Killian and I had stayed longer. Without us fighting.
We arrived at the airport and Killian got down of the car and went into his private jet that was already waiting. He still did not talk or look at me and it was the air hostesses who helped with my bags and everything.
Inside the plane, it felt as if someone had died. The air was so solemn and sad. And I slept a lot during the flight. Sometimes I wake up to see that Killian was not seated where I last saw him. I'd go back to sleep and wake up to see him there. Then I'd eat something and go back to sleep again. That was how it was for over nine hours.
We finally landed in New York and Killian just walked away. He walked to a black car that was already waiting and I followed behind him, but I stopped walking when the car drove off the moment he got in. I froze. Did he leave me at the airport? The car just drove off. I was still lost in my thoughts when a man approached me.
“Mrs Davenport. Please come with me. I'll drop you home.” A man's voice caught my attention and I turned to look at a chauffeur. He was the driver who would drive me home. I took in a deep breath and then slowly nodded my head.
He took care of my bags as we both walked to the car. I got home and carried my bags inside the house. Empty, quiet, neat, and spotless. There was no soul around. I was the only one in the huge house. I sighed heavily and dragged my bags upstairs.
I did not arrange it just yet, because I did not have the strength to do so. I showered and threw myself on the bed instead. I was going to arrange the bags the next day.
I literally had nothing to do and no one to talk to. After a lot of scrolling on my phone, I decided to text Frankie. I initially wanted to ask her about Killian.
‘Hi, good afternoon. Frankie.’ I texted her.
‘Aspen dear. How are you? I learnt that you are in France with Killian? How are you both? I hope you are enjoying your stay there?’ She replied almost immediately and a sad smile appeared on my lips. Was. I was enjoying my stay there.
‘It was fun. But we are back. We landed today.’
‘How is Killian?’
‘He is fine. He stepped out for work.’
‘Please see to it that he gets some rest. He's always working. He barely has time to rest.’ I had noticed that as well.
‘I will. I wanted to ask a question.’
‘Go on dear. You can ask anything.’
I paused and then pursed my lips. I had no idea how I was going to start the question or even ask it. I kept on typing and erasing my text for a whole minute.
‘He told me about his diagnosis.’ Frankie read the text immediately but she did not reply immediately.
‘I see.’ Came her reply about three minutes later.
‘Had he always been like that?’
‘Did he hurt you?’
‘No, no. Not at all. Killian did not hurt me. He did not even touch me. He has never laid his hands on me.’ He did point a gun at me. Fucking asshole. But he had never hit me or attempted to do so.
‘Okay. You are his wife after all. He's not going to hurt you. Killian cares for you a lot.’ I held back a laugh. She had to be joking.
‘How does he deal with it and does it have something to do with Killian not wanting kids?’ I bit hard on my lower lip after sending that text.
‘He told you that?’
‘Yes.’
‘Killian has gotten better over the years. He has gotten more control over himself and knows how to deal with his disorder. He used to lose it in the past and could go very violent. He really worked hard to keep himself in check at all times. And that is not why Killian does not want children. You are very aware of his feud with his father. His reason has something to do with his father. It has something to do with us. Both of us failed Killian a lot and I think this is the price that we get to pay. Sometimes I don't blame him for his actions towards me. I caused it and pushed him away when he needed my support the most. His father was worse. We failed as his parents. And I'm glad that you are in his life, Aspen. Killian deserves love. And in glad that you understand him. You still chose him despite knowing how violent he can get. It's every woman's dream to be a mother. And my son might not want to give you that. But I believe that you can change that. Just make him realise that he will never be like his father and will always be better.’
It took about 30 minutes before I got a reply from Frankie and it was a very long text that got me staring and reading for a very long time. There were lots of questions that I wanted to ask and it would be so inappropriate for me to keep asking Frankie how she failed Killian.
