Chapter 96 Visiting the Prison

Calliope's voice shook, but she tried to stand her ground. "What are you talking about? There's no way Elijah is my real dad! I have my parents! You can't fool me!"

"What kind of parents are they? They took my money and ran off with you from the Brown family. They only raised you for a few years before they died, and you really think they're your real parents?"

"Don't you dare talk about them like that!"

Calliope's anger flared. Tears streamed down her face, her heart a mess of confusion and pain.

No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't accept this harsh truth.

Was her happy home and the warmth she felt all just a big lie?

Calliope's fists clenched so tight her nails dug into her palms, the pain helping her stay a bit more grounded.

Bianca just waited for her to accept it, not bothering to argue anymore because what she said was the truth.

From Bianca's reaction, Calliope got the hint that Bianca hated her because she was Elijah's illegitimate child.

How absurd.

Bianca always claimed she didn't want to be a homewrecker, yet her own mom was one!

And Calliope's existence created a huge rift between Elijah and Bianca.

Finally, Calliope understood why Elijah sometimes looked at her with such a complicated expression.

It all made sense now, and she felt so slow for not noticing sooner.

At that moment, Calliope felt a complex mix of anger, resentment, unwillingness, and confusion. She couldn't understand why fate was playing such a cruel joke on her.

Before today, Calliope could comfort herself with those happy memories.

Her life hadn't always been a complete mess. She once had loving parents and a caring family, but now she was told it had all been a lie.

With all these emotions swirling, Calliope even wanted to hate everyone!

But thinking carefully, she didn't know who to hate or what to do next.

Calliope took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. No matter how harsh the truth was, she had to face it.

She wiped away her tears, straightened her back, and faced Bianca with a newfound determination. "I will find out the truth. No matter what it is, I'll accept it. If I really am the Brown family's daughter, I'll take responsibility. But until then, I won't believe a word you say."

With that, Calliope turned and left the coffee shop.

It was raining outside, and she got soaked. After walking for who knows how long, she finally hailed a cab.

By chance, the cab driver was the same one who had picked her up outside the bar last time!

"It's you again. Did you make up with your boyfriend? I didn't sell your boyfriend's pen but went to Ascend Global Group's front desk and exchanged it for money. They gave me three thousand dollars, saying part of it was compensation and telling me not to spread it around. So I didn't even tell my daughter. It was killing me. Luckily I ran into you today, and I can tell you this thing! Hahaha!"

What a coincidence.

Calliope's mind was already a mess, and she didn't want to think about anything related to Matthew.

Seeing her face darken, the driver stopped talking and focused on driving.

"Where to?"

"Jail."

The rain was pouring down as the car made its way towards the jail in the mountains.

Calliope sat silently in the back seat, the rain blurring the view outside the window, mirroring the chaos in her mind. She was filled with fear of the unknown truth, but also a strange determination.

The questions that had haunted her life might finally be answered today, and she needed to face her fate.

The cab moved slowly through the rain, the driver occasionally glancing at Calliope through the rearview mirror, but staying silent.

The car was filled with a stifling atmosphere, only the sound of the wipers and the occasional splash of water breaking the silence.

Finally, they reached the jail.

Calliope reached out to pay the fare, but the driver refused.

"No need, your boyfriend gave me plenty. Even if I drove you back and forth ten times, it would be enough. No need to pay."

Seeing Calliope's bad mood, the driver tried to comfort her.

Calliope said, "No, his money is his, and mine is mine."

The driver understood that it seemed the two hadn't made up yet.

After getting out of the car, Calliope stood in the rain, took a deep breath, and walked towards the jail.

Her heart was pounding, almost louder than the noisy rain.

The jail gate was tightly closed without a guard post, so she didn't know how to get in. She knocked on the door.

After a while, a man with a crooked hat came out, cursing.

"Who is it? Can't you leave me some peace?"

Seeing someone come out, Calliope quickly approached.

"Hello, I want to visit someone."

"Go away! Visits are only allowed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday."

Most people with relatives in jail knew this, since no one wanted to make a wasted trip.

But Calliope came knocking in the rain!

"Please, I really have something important to see him about, his name is..."

Before she could finish, the guard pushed her away.

"It doesn't matter who you want to see! You have to follow the rules! Do you think this is your house?"

He tried to close the door, but Calliope clung to it, refusing to let go, like a person clinging to the last piece of driftwood in a flood.

The guard was getting frustrated, but when he looked down and saw Calliope's wet body, his eyes lit up.

After a moment of thought, he asked quietly, "Do you really want to see him?"

"Yes, I do!"

"Then it requires special applications. I can help you apply, but I can't guarantee the result. Come in first."

Calliope followed him in without suspicion.

She thought he would take her to a waiting room or something, but they ended up in a room that looked like a dormitory, with a bed and personal items.

The guard casually took off his clothes and threw them on the bed, rubbing his hands excitedly.

"Alright, now you can start your application."

"What do you mean?"
