Chapter 58

Pete had to meet Mason, he had to see him with his own eyes to believe that he was alive. He had to make up for all the years that they had lost. Pete couldn't believe his eyes as he entered the cafe and saw Mason, alive and well, gazing out of the window. It felt like witnessing a miracle, a reunion he had never dared to dream of. The years of separation, the grief, all seemed suspended in that moment.

Mason's eyes met Pete's, and a surge of recognition and emotion washed over them both. Without a word, Mason stood up, memories flooding back. Pete, his heart pounding, rushed toward Mason, and they embraced tightly.

As they sat down, the weight of unspoken words hung in the air. There was so much to say, so many questions, yet neither of them uttered a single word for a long while.

The reunion was more than just physical; it was a reconciliation of emotions, a silent dialogue that spoke volumes. Each passing moment carried the weight of unspoken apologies, gratitude for the unexpected second chance, and the recognition that life, in its unpredictable twists, had brought them back together.

"Pete... I..." Mason began, but Pete intercepted his words.

"How have you been?" Pete's question, delivered with an unexpected casualness, caught Mason off guard. He had anticipated anger, maybe even curses for the years of silence. However, what met him was not rage but a profound sadness in Pete's tone—a grief that had been carried for years. It was a weighty sorrow, a silent acknowledgment of the pain Pete had harbored.

In that moment, the complexities of their relationship unfolded. Pete's calm inquiry spoke volumes about the depth of his emotions, revealing a sorrow that transcended anger.

Mason felt the weight of an apology pressing on him, an urge to convey the reasons that led to years of separation. Yet, before he could voice it, Pete, with a profound understanding, cut through the unspoken tension.

"Mason, the truth is, I want to resent you for making me feel like I was left all alone, that I had lost you and Adam forever, but I can't. I know you had your reasons. We've been through hell, Mason, and I just want things to get better for us, for Adam, and for you," Pete expressed, his words carrying a mix of vulnerability and understanding.

"Pete," Mason met his gaze, a genuine smile breaking through. "You're all grown up now."

Pete returned the smile, "I had to, I was on my own without you and Adam."

"But you'll always be a kid to me, Pete," Mason replied, his words carrying a hint of fondness. After a poignant pause, he finally voiced the sentiment that had been lingering within him. "I'm sorry, kid, for leaving you all alone."

The heaviness in the air seemed to lift as Mason uttered the long-awaited apology. Pete's understanding and forgiveness paved the way for a shared acknowledgment of the complexities that life had thrown at them.

Mason knew Pete forgave him for all his choices, he understood him. Pete was aware that everything Mason did was to protect everyone form any further danger of the mafia world. If the news of Adam being alive would have spread at that time, then the people of mafia would have tried everything to find him, and that pursuit they would have hurt everyone close to Adam.

Mason couldn't have risked everyone's lives and so he did what he thought was best, he kept himself and Adam in the dark.

Mason and Adam had suffered as well, with Adam losing his memory and Mason still protecting Adam. Pete wanted both of them to be free and live a normal life now.

"What are we going to do about Adam? And what about the danger, any threats you noticed?" Pete inquired, his concern extending beyond their reunion to the potential risks that might still linger in the shadows of their past lives.

Mason, a mixture of relief and weariness in his expression, responded, "I've dug through every possible way, and thankfully, we've gotten out of that hell world." A moment of gratitude passed before Mason broached a more delicate subject. "The only problem is Adam's memory. I've tried so much to keep him away from all the horrible memories of his past, but I want him to remember all the good memories, I want him to remember Mariah. But I don't know what to do."

Pete, understanding the weight of Mason's dilemma, offered a sad smile. "I've talked to Mariah; she has decided to try and make him remember her and stay by his side even if he does not remember her. She's determined."

In that exchange, a bittersweet acknowledgment unfolded. The love between Mariah and Adam, resilient in the face of challenges, became a focal point. Mason and Pete shared a silent understanding of the depth of that love—a force that transcended the complexities of memory loss and the scars of their past.

As they contemplated the path forward, the shadows of the mafia world seemed momentarily pushed aside by the resolve to guide Adam through the maze of his fragmented memories.

In the following months, Mariah persisted in visiting Adam under the guise of Mason's friend. She held onto the hope that their closeness might trigger Adam's memories, but each encounter revealed the stark reality. Adam showed no signs of recognition, his gaze indifferent even when Pete and Blaire joined the attempts to connect.

During the first meeting, as Pete embraced him, Adam's response hinted at a faint glimmer of familiarity. "You seem familiar," were the only words Adam uttered, a small spark in the vast sea of forgotten memories. Pete was just glad to see Adam alive, it was indeed a miracle for all of them.

But Pete had to control himself from being too obvious, as he kept calling Adam 'Boss', as he was used to when they lived at the mansion together. Adam would found himself confused every time he called him that, and Mariah would glare at Pete. It was sad to see that they were united once again, but the tragedy was nothing was the same as before. Adam didn't remember any of them.
