Chapter 56
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the city. Mariah stood at the familiar meeting spot, her heart racing with anticipation and anxiety. Mason had asked her to meet him there, promising to take her to Adam. But there was a condition - they had to pretend to be just friends in front of Adam, a charade of normalcy to shield him from the complexities of their past.
As Mason approached, Mariah could see the concern etched in his eyes. He gently squeezed her hand, offering reassurance in his touch. "Remember, Mariah, we have to be careful. Adam's mind is fragile right now. We don't want to overwhelm him."
Mariah nodded, her throat tight with the emotions she was trying to suppress. "I understand, Mason. I'll do whatever it takes to help him."
They walked together towards the house Mason and Adam had been living for years. Mariah's steps felt heavy, each one carrying the weight of the unknown. The journey was filled with silence, both lost in their thoughts. Mariah couldn't help but wonder how Adam would react, how he'd look at her when he didn't remember the love they had shared.
Mason was there, his presence a source of comfort and support. He knew what Mariah was going through, having witnessed her journey from despair to hope.
As they reached their destination, Mason signaled Mariah to prepare herself. They had to wear masks, the emotional ones, pretending to be just friends.
"Are you ready, Mariah?" Mason asked gently.
Mariah took a deep breath, her gaze fixed on the path ahead. "I have to be, Mason. For Adam and for Ella. But it won't be easy, pretending."
Mason nodded, his eyes reflecting the empathy he felt for Mariah. "Remember, this is just a stepping stone, a way to help Adam regain his footing. Love has its own way of revealing the truth. And you'll be there to guide him."
Adam was waiting for them, his expression of curiosity. Mason had already told Adam about Mariah's arrival. He told him that she was her friend and colleague at work.
When they entered the room where Adam was, Mariah's breath caught in her throat. He looked different, his eyes carrying a distant gaze, as if he were searching for something he couldn't quite grasp. Mariah masked her emotions, forcing a smile as she greeted him.
Mariah saw him, her heart aching at the sight of the man she loved.
"Adam," Mason greeted him warmly. "I'd like you to meet Mariah, an old friend of mine."
Mariah extended her hand, her smile masking the turmoil within. Mariah wanted throw herself in Adam's arms, she wanted to kiss him and tell him about their daughter. She wanted to make up for all the years that they lost but she couldn't, she knew the Adam standing in front of her didn't recognize her. “It’s nice to meet you, Adam."
Adam shook her hand, a polite smile on his face. "Likewise."
As Mariah looked into Adam's eyes, searching for a glimmer of recognition, she felt her heart shatter into a million pieces. Adam's question hung in the air, heavy with the weight of lost memories.
"Have we met before?" he asked, his voice gentle yet devoid of the familiarity Mariah craved.
Mariah forced a smile, holding back the tears threatening to spill. "We might have crossed paths at some point, but nothing significant."
Adam nodded, his brows furrowed slightly as if he was trying to grasp at a memory just out of reach. Mariah's heart ached at the sight, knowing that the man standing before her was a mere echo of the Adam she had loved.
As they parted ways, Mariah walked away with a heavy heart. The tears she had held back now flowed freely, mingling with the rain that began to fall. The ache of unspoken words and forgotten moments weighed her down.
In the midst of her sorrow, Mariah found a bittersweet solace in the fact that Adam, even without remembering her, had felt a hint of familiarity. It was a fragile thread connecting their past to the present, a glimmer of hope in the darkness of uncertainty.
With every step she took, Mariah carried the weight of her unspoken love, her unwavering commitment to help Adam find his way back to her. Despite the pain, she clung to the belief that love, in its purest form, could transcend even the barriers of forgotten memories. And so, with tear-streaked cheeks and a heart heavy with love, Mariah forged ahead, determined to guide Adam back to the love they had shared, even if it meant starting from scratch.
The door creaked open as Mariah stepped inside, her heart still heavy from the encounter with Adam. The warmth of her home embraced her like a familiar, comforting blanket. Ella, her little beacon of light, rushed towards her, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Mommy, where were you? I missed you so much!" Ella's voice was filled with innocence and love.
Mariah knelt down, her eyes meeting Ella's. She placed a gentle kiss on her daughter's forehead, feeling the unconditional love radiating from the little soul in front of her. "I missed you too, my sweet Ella. I missed you more than words can say."
Ella wrapped her tiny arms around Mariah, hugging her tightly. "I love you, Mommy."
Mariah's heart swelled with love as she hugged Ella back, her eyes moist with tears. "I love you too, my angel. I'm here, and I'll always be here for you. No matter what happens, you're my everything."
Ella's eyes sparkled with excitement as she delivered the news about Aunt Blaire and Uncle Pete's visit, their arrival marked by the promise of chocolates and toys. Mariah couldn't help but smile at her daughter's enthusiasm, feeling a renewed sense of warmth and anticipation.
"Really, Ella? Aunt Blaire and Uncle Pete are here?" Mariah asked, her voice laced with curiosity.
Ella nodded vigorously, her curls bouncing with every motion. "Yes, Mommy! They brought us lots of chocolates and toys. Come let's go inside, they're waiting for you Mommy."
Mariah's heart swelled with gratitude for the friends who had stood by her side during the most challenging times of her life.
With a smile firmly in place, Mariah led Ella inside to meet Aunt Blaire and Uncle Pete. Their cheerful laughter and genuine smiles filled the room as they exchanged greetings and shared the surprises they had brought.
"Guys, you're spoiling her," Mariah said after seeing all the gifts that they had brought with them.
Pete carried Ella in her arms and Ella giggled, "But she's our little princess."
"Every time Pete and I go out, we just can't hold ourselves back from buying toys for our little princess, everything reminds us of her. We miss her so much," Blaire poked Ella's cheek which makes Ella laugh. All three of them admire the little ray of sunshine in front of them.
