Chapter 45

Adam’s heart was heavy with a mixture of excitement and nervousness as he clutched the small velvet box in his hand. Inside was a diamond ring, a symbol of his love and commitment to Mariah. He had been planning to propose to her, to take their relationship to the next level and build a future together. He was ready to leave everything behind. Adam felt like he had been given a second chance in life, a chance to make everything right. He was determined to build a life he always desired, the one his father wished for his family.

Adam had selected the most expensive ring, he knew it wasn't the money that mattered but the love but he wanted to give his all to Mariah just like she had given her all to him.

Just as he was leaving the extravagant jewelry store, his phone buzzed on the table. It was Nurse Sophia from the hospital, the bearer of news that would shatter his world. His heart raced as he answered the call, his hand trembling slightly.

“Adam,” Nurse Sophia’s voice was somber, carrying a weight that sent a shiver down his spine. “I’m so sorry to inform you that your father has passed away.”

The words hit Adam like a sledgehammer, knocking the breath out of him. It was as if the world had come crashing down around him. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, couldn’t fathom that his only remaining family member was gone.

Tears welled up in his eyes as he listened to Nurse Sophia’s words. He felt a rush of emotions – shock, grief, disbelief. His father, the man who had raised him, guided him, and despite their differences, loved him, was no longer there.

Adam’s grip on the phone tightened as he struggled to process the news. He felt a surge of anger, a sense of betrayal at the universe for taking away the only family he had left. He could hardly believe that his father, who had just woken up from his coma, was now gone forever.

Without a second thought, Adam rushed out and towards his car. He didn’t care about anything else in that moment – he needed to see his father, to make sure this wasn’t some cruel nightmare.

His heart pounding like a drum in his chest. He drove towards the hospital, his emotions a whirlwind of sorrow and desperation. The world around him seemed to blur as he sped through streets, his focus solely on reaching the hospital.

He ignored red lights and stop signs, his mind consumed by a single thought – to see his father, to confirm the news with his own eyes. Doubt gnawed at him, and he couldn’t trust anyone else to tell him the truth. He needed to see the truth for himself.

As he reached the hospital, he parked the car haphazardly and practically sprinted towards his father’s room. His heart raced, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he reached the door.

And there, on the bed, lay his father’s lifeless body. The sight was a punch to the gut, a confirmation of the news he had desperately hoped was false. His legs felt like lead as he approached the bedside, his eyes fixed on the still form before him.

Pete and Mason, stood beside him. Their eyes were red and swollen, a reflection of the grief that weighed heavily in the room. They turned towards Adam, their expressions a mixture of sorrow and empathy.

Tears streamed down Adam’s face as he looked at his father’s face, peaceful in death. He felt a surge of emotions – the pain of loss, the regret of things unsaid, the realization that he was truly alone now.

“Hey, Dad,” his voice trembled as he leaned closer to the bed. “It’s me, Adam.”

His fingers brushed against his father’s cold hand, the reality of the situation sinking in. He couldn’t hold back the sobs that racked his body, his grief pouring out in waves.

“Wake up, Dad,” his voice was a broken whisper, a plea to the universe to rewind time, to undo the irreversible. “Please, wake up.”

His words grew louder with each repetition, his voice cracking with the weight of his emotions. He shook his father’s lifeless form, as if by sheer willpower alone he could bring him back.

The room seemed to close in around him as he clung to his father’s body, his heartache echoing in the emptiness that surrounded him. He cried out his pain, his voice a primal scream of loss and despair. And as he clung to his father’s lifeless form, his tears soaked the bedspread, a testament to the love and bond that death could never erase.

“Come on, Dad!” he screamed, his voice a raw, agonized plea. “Wake up! Please!”

"You can't leave me like this...you can't," Adam broke down.

In a desperate moment, Adam turned to his friends Pete and Mason for help. His trembling arms reached out to grasp Mason's collar, his eyes filled with tears, and he implored Mason to deliver a heartfelt message.

"Please, Mason," Adam choked back his emotions, "you've always had a way with words. Tell my Dad to wake up. He's always listened to you."

The room seemed to hang on those words, as if the power of Mason's voice could work a miracle, bringing life back to the still figure lying on the bed. It was a poignant plea, born of hope and desperation, as Adam clung to the belief that a friend's words could transcend the boundary between life and death.

Pete couldn't bear to see Adam in such pain. Ignoring any attempts to push him away, he enveloped Adam in a tight, comforting hug. Tears streamed down both their faces as they shared this moment of deep sorrow and empathy, finding solace in each other's presence.
