Uncovering The Secret
Uncovering The Secret
Roland's Point of View:
My day was pretty intense, and I received a lot of hateful stares from different doctors, but I managed to keep my cool.
“He came through the back door, and he even got the assistant director fired, just because he wanted his office,” Those were the words in almost all the hospital staff's mouths, and I couldn't help but wonder who told them such a disturbing lie.
“I haven't met the assistant director before, so why would I even fire him?” I wondered aloud.
As I walked through the hospital corridors, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. It seemed like everyone was staring at me, their eyes filled with a mixture of anger and suspicion.
I tried to shake off the feeling, telling myself that I had done nothing wrong. But the words of the hospital staff kept echoing in my mind. Should I tell the director to calm everyone? Or should I take matters into my own hands?” I thought, as my feet echoed on the floor.
I had not been assigned to any patients, and in the few assignments I got, the doctor on duty said they didn't need my assistance, and that I was a bother to them.
After thinking for a while, I finally decided to pay a visit to the director, to clear up the matter. As I entered her office, I could smell her intoxicating perfume in the air.
"Director, I'm so sorry for disturbing you, but I need to talk to you about something," I said, getting straight to the point.
The director looked up from the papers on her desk, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "What is it, Dr. Roland? Or have you finally chosen to transfer to another branch?"
I immediately shook my head. "No, of course not. I've been hearing rumors that I got the assistant director fired," I said, trying to keep my tone neutral. "I want to know who started this rumor. And what does it mean? Does the office I am currently staying in belong to him?”
The director's expression turned serious, and she leaned back in her chair. "I'm afraid I don't know who started the rumor, Dr. Roland. But I do know that the assistant director did resign suddenly, and some people might have jumped to conclusions." She tried to sound confident, but I knew she was lying. The assistant director didn't resign from his own free will.
I frowned, feeling a sense of frustration, but decided to go along with her. “Should I return to the original office assigned to me? Would that stop the rumor?” I asked curiously.
“No, of course not!” The director replied with an urgent voice, and this fueled my suspicion. “Your family will bury me alive if they find out that you were given a small working space,” she continued.
I sighed in frustration. “Come on, director. You spoke about honesty how can you still lie to me? If you want my complete honesty, then you must be willing to give me the same!”
The director looked like she had been caught, and her eyes dropped. “The assistant director was fired when he refused to give up his office. But the main reason why he was let go, was because he threatened to tell the whole world that our hospital was receiving bribery.” She confessed.
“Wow! I deserve the hatred I'm getting, don't I?” I asked a rhetorical question, and my gaze was fixed on the floor tiles.
The director's expression turned somber, and she nodded slowly. "I'm afraid so, Dr. Roland. But please know that it isn't your fault. It's because you were born by a mistress."
I looked up at her, feeling a mix of emotions. Anger, frustration, and disappointment swirled inside me. "A mistress?" I repeated, my voice rising. "My mother is not a mistress, she is a victim! Also, I'm a doctor, not a pawn. And I deserve to know the truth."
The director sighed, rubbing her temples. "I know, Dr. Roland. And I'm sorry. But please, you have to understand. The case of the assistant director is a delicate situation. If the truth gets out, it could ruin the reputation of this hospital and everyone involved."
I shook my head, feeling a sense of disillusionment. "I thought we were supposed to be honest and transparent. But it seems like that's just a facade."
The director's expression turned pleading. "Dr. Roland, please. You have to trust me. We're doing this for the greater good."
I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "The greater good? Or is it just to protect your interests?"
The director's face turned red, and she stood up, her eyes flashing with anger. "How dare you! I'm trying to protect this hospital, its patients, and your family's reputation. And I won't let you or anyone else ruin it."
I stood up, my heart racing. "I'm not trying to ruin anything. I just want the truth."
The director's expression turned cold, and she pointed to the door. "Get out, Dr. Roland. And don't come back until you're ready to play by the rules. I was scared of you before, but now that I've found out that you belong to a mistress, I have nothing to be afraid of. ”
I was so angry, that I used all my strength to bang her door before leaving. The other hospital staff were surprised because of the way I'd left, and they looked at me with raised brows.
The minute I got to my office, I walked over to the window, staring out at the city below. I shook my head, chuckling wryly to myself. It seemed like I had already made enemies, and I hadn't even been here a week. I had always known that my family was one step ahead of me. My late mother also told me that the Salad family name would come with its challenges, but I had never expected it to be this difficult.
As I stood there, lost in thought, my mind began to wander back to Riley. I couldn't help but wonder what she had come to do in the Cancer department.
“No, no. She probably came to check up on someone. Riley doesn't have cancer, if she did she would have told me or her family!” I tried assuring myself, as I made up my mind to stop thinking negatively. But it was impossible, especially when the evidence was right in front of me.
After thinking for a while, I tried to focus on the files of some patients, when a thought dropped in my head. “What if I go through Riley's file and check for any abnormality?”
I immediately stood up to carry out my mission. I knew it wasn't going to be easy since I was in a different department, but I was determined and willing to uncover the truth.
