Chapter 49 Gambling with One’s Life in a Car Crash
As night fell, the city lights began to glow.
Below the Starlight Entertainment building, the early autumn evening breeze carried a hint of chill.
Dylan's black Bentley sat quietly by the roadside.
He'd been restless all afternoon, that Facebook post like a thorn stuck in his heart that he couldn't pull out.
After work, he inexplicably didn't head straight back to the Wilson family home, instead having his driver park here.
He'd wanted to give Grace a ride home, and maybe... feel her out about things.
Before long, Grace emerged from the building's revolving door in her heels.
She looked a bit tired, raising her hand to rub her temples.
Dylan pushed open the car door and was about to step out when the harsh roar of a sports car suddenly tore through the night.
A flashy Aston Martin executed a perfect drift and stopped right in front of Grace.
The door opened, and Alfred stepped out in a sharp suit, holding an over-the-top bouquet of red roses in one hand and a limited edition gift box from some luxury brand in the other, his face beaming.
Dylan's steps came to an abrupt halt, his expression instantly darkening, the temperature around him dropping to freezing.
Seeing Alfred appear out of nowhere, Grace immediately frowned deeply.
From the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Dylan standing tall in the distance, and silently cursed her bad luck.
Dylan had already been unhappy at the restaurant earlier today—if he now saw Alfred acting like this persistent pest, things would only get more awkward.
To avoid dragging Dylan into this mess, Grace quickly walked up to him, her tone gentle but firm. "Dylan, you should head back. Thanks for your hard work at the company today. Get some rest early."
Dylan looked down at her, his deep eyes churning with emotions dark as ink.
Was she sending him away? To be alone with Alfred?
"Alright." Dylan pressed his thin lips together tightly.
Without asking another question, he turned, opened the car door, and got in.
The black Bentley melted into the night like a ghost and sped away.
Inside the car, the atmosphere was so tense it could freeze.
Logan gripped the steering wheel tightly, carefully glancing through the rearview mirror at the man in the back seat.
Dylan was hidden in the dim light, his jawline tense, his eyes behind the gold-rimmed glasses fixed deadly on the window. That look could kill.
Logan swallowed hard, unsure whether to press the gas pedal or ease up.
He'd worked for Dylan long enough to know that when his boss looked like this, he'd clearly knocked over a barrel of old vinegar but was still trying to maintain that cool, aloof facade.
"Mr. Wilson, are we... really leaving?" Logan ventured cautiously. How could they feel okay leaving Grace with that scumbag?
Dylan's lips pressed into a thin line, his slender fingers unconsciously clenching on his knee.
He closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, the dark turbulence had been forcibly suppressed.
"Pull over. Stop the car." Dylan's voice was cold and sharp, with a hint of gritted teeth.
Logan felt relieved and immediately signaled, pulling the Bentley to a stop in a discreet spot under the trees across the street.
Dylan lowered half the window, his gaze cutting through the busy street to land precisely on the man and woman standing side by side.
He wanted to see if Grace really planned to take back this ex.
Alfred was completely oblivious to the icy stare from across the street.
Seeing Grace actively send Dylan away, his joy nearly overflowed.
He thought he'd finally seen the clouds part and the moon appear, thought that Facebook post was Grace's signal that she was willing to take him back.
"Grace!" Alfred walked forward excitedly, holding the enormous bouquet of red roses out to her, his eyes shining with fervent light. "I knew it—you still have feelings for me! This is a new necklace from your favorite brand. I specially had someone fly it back from Paris for you."
Grace looked coldly at the lush roses, not even wanting to lift her hand.
She was about to make a sarcastic remark when Alfred, completely unfazed, turned and attentively opened the passenger door of the Aston Martin.
"Grace, I made a reservation at Skyline Restaurant. Candlelight dinner, just the two of us." Alfred held his hand over the car roof in an extremely gentlemanly gesture, his eyes full of affection. "Give me a chance to make it up to you, okay?"
Grace watched his affectionate act and felt her stomach turn.
She was about to tell him to get lost when a miserable cry suddenly tore through the early autumn evening breeze.
"Alfred!"
Grace looked toward the sound to see Brenda rushing out from behind some landscaping.
Brenda now looked nothing like her usual refined, delicate self.
She was still wearing an oversized hospital gown, her feet in ill-fitting plastic slippers, and the ankle that had been wrapped in gauze was now seeping spots of blood.
Her face was deathly pale, tears streaming down her face, her whole body swaying as if a gust of wind could knock her over.
The smile on Alfred's face instantly froze as he stared in shock at the woman who'd suddenly appeared. "Brenda? How did you get out of the hospital?"
Brenda completely ignored Alfred. She stumbled toward Grace and without hesitation dropped to her knees with a "thud."
"Grace, I was wrong! I really know I was wrong!" Brenda clutched at Grace's skirt, crying her heart out, drawing the attention of office workers passing by.
"I shouldn't have hoped for Alfred's love. I saw your Facebook post. I know you had lunch together. I know Alfred only has eyes for you..." As Brenda cried, she looked up, her tear-stained face full of "heartbroken" acceptance. "Grace, I'm apologizing to you! I promise I'll never interfere with your relationship again! I'll disappear completely and give Alfred back to you!"
Grace looked down at the woman kneeling at her feet, her eyes showing no sympathy, only cool clarity.
Couldn't hold it together anymore? Seemed that Facebook post had been even more effective than she'd expected.
"Brenda, what are you doing! Get up!" Alfred finally snapped out of it. Seeing people pointing and whispering around them, he felt utterly humiliated.
He reached out to pull Brenda up, but she shook him off.
Brenda slowly stood up from the ground. She didn't look at Grace, but turned her head to gaze at Alfred with an expression of deep sorrow, longing, and despair.
That look seemed to contain a thousand unspoken words, and also seemed like a final farewell.
"Alfred, be happy."
Before the words had fully left her mouth, Brenda suddenly spun around and like a moth to flame, recklessly rushed toward the traffic-filled street!
"Brenda! Don't!"
