Chapter 50

Chapter 50
Lyra’s POV

The courtyard was silent when I slipped out. Moonlight painted everything in silver and shadow..the stone walls, the frost-tipped grass, the scars of past battles that still marred the ground.

Everyone else had gone to bed hours ago. Everyone except me.

The air was cold enough to bite, but heat rolled under my skin like a second heartbeat. It had been building all day—every word, every glare, every reminder that I might be the reason the pack was falling apart.

If I didn’t learn to control this… someone else would pay the price.

I lifted my hands.

The flame came instantly. No hesitation this time, no coaxing. Just fire, pure and bright, curling around my fingers like it had been waiting for me.

I breathed it in.

For a heartbeat, it felt right.

But then something shifted.

The flame pulsed…not with my heartbeat, but its own. It didn’t follow me anymore. It watched.

A voice flickered inside my head, faint but undeniable.
You don’t control fire. You are the fire.

I stumbled back, shaking my head. “No,” I whispered. “That’s not true.”

But the air trembled. The flame rose higher, stretching, twisting, almost playful at first, until it lunged forward, wild and hungry.

“Stop!” I tried to pull it back, but it only grew. Heat cracked the stone at my feet. My pulse raced. The voice came again, lower this time..darker.
You call yourself its master? You are its meal.

Panic clawed up my throat. The fire wanted out. It wanted more than me.

I tried to extinguish it, but my hands burned, the flames licking up my arms like living things. I screamed as pain seared through me.

And then—

“Lyra!”

Draven’s voice cut through the roar.

He appeared out of the darkness, his eyes blazing gold. I tried to warn him, but he didn’t stop. He didn’t even hesitate.

“Stay back!” I shouted. “I can’t control it!”

He stepped straight into the fire.

The heat should’ve thrown him back, but he kept walking…through the burning air, through the sparks that clawed at his skin. The flames scorched his clothes, kissed his hands, but he didn’t flinch.

“Draven!” My voice broke. “You’ll burn!”

His gaze locked on mine, fierce and unwavering. “Then I burn with you.”

The words shattered something in me.

He reached me..his hand closing around my wrist, the touch steady despite the fire. “Look at me,” he said, his voice deep and calm, cutting through the chaos. “Breathe. You’re not its vessel. You’re its heart. Remember who commands who.”

I tried to focus on his voice. The pain blurred, the world dimming to just him, the Alpha standing in the middle of my storm.

“Breathe with me, Lyra.”

I obeyed. One inhale. One exhale. His chest rose and fell with mine. The flames flickered, hesitated, then slowly…slowly, recoiled.

He didn’t let go until the courtyard was quiet again, the air thick with smoke and the faint scent of burnt stone.

When the last spark died, I realized he was still holding me. His palms were blistered, his breathing ragged, but his grip didn’t waver.

“You’re insane,” I whispered, tears stinging my eyes. “You walked into fire for me.”

His mouth twitched, something between pain and a smile. “You think that’s the first time I’ve done something stupid for you?”

“Draven—your hands—” I reached for them, but he stopped me with a shake of his head.

“They’ll heal.” His eyes softened, gold fading back to amber. “You’re the one I’m worried about.”

I swallowed hard, my throat raw. “It’s different now. It talks to me. The fire. It wants to take over.”

He frowned. “What do you mean, talks to you?”

“I heard it tonight.” My voice trembled. “It said I don’t control it. That I belong to it.”

He stepped closer, his presence steadying even as his scent, cedar and storm..wrapped around me. “You belong to no one,” he said fiercely. “Not to Mira. Not to prophecy. Not even to the flame.”

Something in his tone broke through the fear. It wasn’t a command..it was a vow.

“Draven…”

He lifted a hand, brushing a strand of hair from my face. His touch lingered, his eyes dark and unreadable. “You have no idea what it does to me, seeing you fight like that.”

I could barely breathe. “What does it do to you?”

His jaw tightened, but he didn’t look away. “It makes me want to stop you before you burn. And it makes me want to burn with you.”

The air between us felt charged…alive. The faint glow of dying embers reflected in his eyes, and for a moment, the fire inside me wasn’t something to fear. It was something that pulled me closer.

“Draven…” My voice was a whisper, my heartbeat wild.

His gaze dropped to my lips, and for a heartbeat, the world went still.

Then—

The wolf horn sounded.

The deep, shuddering blast cut through the night, echoing across the valley.

Draven froze. His head snapped toward the keep. “That’s the northern watch.”

My pulse spiked. “Rogues?”

“Too many for a scouting party,” he said, already moving. “Stay behind me.”

But before I could answer, a new sound split the air..howls. Dozens. Then hundreds. A tide of them, rising from the dark edges of the forest.

The ground trembled beneath my feet.

Draven shifted halfway, his eyes blazing, fangs flashing. “Get inside. Now.”

I took a step toward the courtyard gate, but then..

A voice.

It wasn’t coming from any throat. It rode on the wind itself, soft and poisonous, curling through the night like smoke.

Mira’s voice.

“The vessel burns tonight.”

The words rolled through the darkness, thick with power.

Every torch in the courtyard went out.

The wind screamed. The howls grew louder.

Draven turned toward the gate, his body tensing like a drawn bow. “Get to the keep, Lyra. Go!”

But I didn’t move. The air shimmered around me, faint sparks crawling up my arms again…answering the threat like it recognized it.

The fire was back. And this time, it was hungry.

Draven’s shout was the last thing I heard before the night erupted…howls, flames, and the roar of a war that had finally come to Solhaven.
