Chapter 48

Chapter 48
Lyra’s  POV

The first thing Draven said that morning was, “Again.”

My arms ached, my palms still raw under the bandages, and sweat dripped down the back of my neck, but his tone left no room for protest. He stood a few feet away in the training yard, arms folded, a wall of shadow and authority.

“I already tried,” I panted. “The flame fizzles every time.”

“Then try again.” His eyes caught the morning light, glinting like molten gold. “You’re not here to avoid mistakes. You’re here to master them.”

I wanted to snap at him, to tell him I was tired, that my hands were still blistered..but part of me knew he was right. So I drew in a breath, spreading my fingers. Heat curled under my skin, the familiar burn crawling up my arms. A lick of flame sputtered to life in my palms, then stuttered, threatening to lash out in all directions.

My chest tightened. “It’s slipping—”

Draven was behind me in a heartbeat. His hands closed gently, firmly, around my wrists, steadying me.

“Breathe.” His voice was low, close to my ear. “Don’t fight it. Shape it.”

The warmth of him pressed against my back, his chest solid, his breath brushing my neck. My fire roared in response, not out of control, but alive, tethered to his presence like it had been waiting for him all along.

I tried to focus on the flame, but his nearness scattered my thoughts. My heart pounded, the burn in my palms mingling with the heat curling low in my stomach.

“Why do you always stand so close?” I muttered, my voice shakier than I intended.

His lips almost grazed my ear when he answered. “Because when you lose yourself, I need to be the one to catch you.”

My throat tightened. “And if I don’t want to be caught?”

His hands didn’t move from my wrists. “Then tell me now. Tell me to step away, Lyra, and I will.”

I said nothing. Couldn’t.

The flame in my hands flared, bright enough to sear the air. I gasped, and his arms shifted, enclosing mine, guiding the fire upward into a clean, controlled ribbon. For the first time, it didn’t explode outward. It danced. Obedient. Beautiful.

I turned my head just enough to see him. His eyes weren’t on the flame. They were on me.

“That’s it,” he said softly. “You’re not fighting the fire anymore. You’re dancing with it.”

“You make it sound so easy,” I whispered.

He almost smiled. “Nothing about this is easy. But it’s worth it.”

My breath caught. For a moment, the world narrowed to the heat between us, the steady press of his hands, the way his voice curved around me like a tether holding me together.

But the second I realized how close we were..how close I wanted us to be, I pulled back. The flame sputtered out with a hiss.

“I can’t,” I whispered, stepping away.

Draven’s brows knit, frustration flickering across his face. “You were in control. Why stop?”

“Because,” I snapped, then bit down on my lip. My chest tightened, not with fire this time, but fear. “Because if I give in, if I let myself feel everything you’re making me feel—it could trigger whatever Mira wants. The prophecy. The Flameborn. I can’t risk it.”

His expression darkened. He took a step closer, but I held my ground.

“You think being near me makes you weaker?” His voice was rough, dangerous, but beneath it was something rawer. Something almost pleading.

I shook my head. “Not weaker. Just…less mine. Like the fire isn’t me anymore. Like it wants you too.”

His jaw tightened. “And what if it does? What if it wants us both?”

I swallowed hard. “Then I don’t know how to survive it.”

The silence between us burned hotter than the flame had. For a second, I thought he’d close the distance, say something that would break the fragile restraint holding us apart. But instead, he dragged a hand through his hair and turned away, jaw tight.

“Training’s over for today,” he said flatly.

I hated the hollow feeling that left behind.

⸻

That night, I dreamt of fire again.

At first, it was the same vision that had haunted me for weeks: Seraphina, silver-haired, her eyes burning like twin suns, her voice echoing inside my skull. Child of fire. Keeper of the flame.

But this time, something fractured.

The silver light dimmed. Her face flickered, like a candle guttering out. I reached for her, desperate, but as her image wavered, something else rose in her place.

A shadow. A figure made not of light, but of black fire. Its eyes were not suns, they were pits. Endless.

“You will not hold the flame,” it whispered in a voice that made my skin crawl. “The flame will hold you.”

“No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “I won’t let it.”

The shadow’s fire licked up my arms, devouring, hungry.

I screamed, reaching again for Seraphina, but she was gone.

I woke with a cry, drenched in sweat, my bandages smoldering faintly at the edges.

Draven was already in my room, his eyes blazing in the dim light. He must have come when he heard me scream. He didn’t ask what I’d seen. He didn’t have to.

Instead, he sat on the edge of the bed, close enough that the warmth of him steadied the tremors in my body. His hand hovered, as though he wanted to touch me but didn’t dare.

“What did she say?” he asked quietly.

I swallowed, throat raw. “It wasn’t her this time. It was something else. Something darker.”

His jaw clenched. He leaned in, his voice fierce but steady. “Listen to me. Whatever Mira says, whatever shadows your mind shows you…they do not own you. You decide who you are. You.”

Tears stung my eyes. “What if I’m not strong enough?”

“You are,” he said without hesitation. “I’ve seen it. Every time you fall, you rise fiercer than before. You don’t even see it, but I do.”

His hand finally settled on mine, warm, grounding.

“Draven…” My voice cracked. “And if that shadow was right? If the flame holds me?”

His gaze didn’t waver. “Then I’ll tear it apart with my own hands.”

I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe I was more than a vessel, more than a prophecy’s pawn. But even as his presence steadied me, I couldn’t shake the memory of that voice in the dark.

The flame will hold you.

And for the first time, I wasn’t sure if fighting it..or surrendering to it, would destroy me faster.
