Chapter 146: Whispers Beneath the Stone
Chapter 146: Whispers Beneath the Stone
I never imagined the library would become a battlefield.
Not of swords or claws—but of ink, memory, and truths long buried beneath layers of dust.
The Capital Archives sat deep below the Citadel, tucked behind enchanted doors older than any living wolf. Only the Council’s appointed historians and the High Mystic herself had access to the deepest levels. But now, with the world shifting beneath our feet, the rules were changing.
Seris and I stood before the sealed gates, our hands pressed to the glowing stone.
“This place was warded to keep secrets in,” she said. “Not to keep people out.”
With a flick of her wrist and a whispered incantation, the doors groaned open. The air that spilled out was cold, heavy with age and a hint of something… watching.
We stepped inside.
⸻
Row after row of tomes lined the stone walls, each etched with golden runes and iron clasps. The deeper we walked, the more oppressive the silence became. It wasn’t dead—it was waiting.
Alec joined us minutes later, his boots echoing on the polished floor. “Anything?”
Seris shook her head. “Not yet. But if the Fangborn are working from ancient sources, then the clues to their next gate must be here.”
I wandered to a shelf carved with celestial symbols. One caught my eye: a moon eclipsed by shadow, ringed in flame.
My fingers traced its outline. “This symbol… I saw it in the ravine. On the robes of one of the anchors.”
Seris rushed to my side, her eyes narrowing. “That’s from the Codex Nocturnum. A forbidden text detailing lost rituals of lunar convergence.”
“You know it?”
“I’ve only heard of it. It’s locked in the deep vault. If they used that to open the first gate… gods, Evelyn, there may be more.”
⸻
Retrieving the Codex was not simple.
We descended past the last archive level, into a vault so old even the stone seemed afraid to speak. Alec took the lead, blade drawn, as if sensing something unnatural lurking in the dark.
At the heart of the chamber, a pedestal of obsidian held a single book. The air shimmered around it like heat off a forge.
Seris reached for it—only for a blast of defensive magic to lash out.
She cried out and staggered back, clutching her hand.
I didn’t think.
I stepped forward and placed my palm on the pedestal.
The seal on my chest flared to life.
The vault recognized me.
The magic parted like mist, and the book opened.
Alec exhaled slowly. “Well, that’s new.”
Seris blinked, rubbing her singed fingers. “You just unlocked a centuries-sealed grimoire with your body.”
I smirked. “Didn’t know I had that talent.”
“You might be the key to more than the seal,” she muttered.
⸻
We spent hours studying the Codex Nocturnum.
Within its pages, we found twisted drawings of celestial alignments, sacrificial rituals, and… gate locations.
Or rather, gate markers.
Four were listed—each tied to a cardinal direction.
The ravine had been one. The “Western Mouth.”
The next? A mountain range in the far North, beneath a dormant volcano.
“The Crown of Ice,” Seris whispered.
I stared at the ancient sketch. A glacier split by a scar of obsidian, marked with the eclipse symbol. “They’re already there, aren’t they?”
“They have to be,” Alec growled.
Seris nodded grimly. “And if they complete the second gate, the balance will tip further. The Hollowed One won’t need a full summoning. He’ll simply wake up.”
We didn’t hesitate.
⸻
By the next dawn, we stood at the transport circles beneath the Citadel. Logan, Daria, and a new group of warriors flanked us, all geared for a northern expedition. The air buzzed with urgency.
Kael, the young mage who had been assisting Seris, approached me. “You’ll need more than steel in the Crown of Ice,” he said. “Take this.”
He handed me a crystal dagger glowing with lunar energy. “Forged in moonfire. It cuts through cursed ice—and lies.”
I nodded in thanks, tucking it into my belt.
Alec took my hand. “Are you ready?”
I met his gaze.
I was ready. Not just for the journey, but for the role I could no longer deny.
Seal-bearer. Mate. Warrior. And something more.
“I was born for this,” I whispered.
⸻
We vanished into the northern winds.
And the ice was waiting.
