Chapter 254 Ritual Under Attack
Chapter 254 Ritual Under Attack
The ancient cave deep within the bear's forest smelled of herbs and damp moss. I sat in the center of a rough stone circle, surrounded by pillars carved with intricate bear clan runes. Morgan and Garrick stood before me, their faces solemn as they held a crude stone bowl filled with dark red liquid that gave off a potent herbal scent.
The air felt heavy, thick with the weight of ancient magic, and a faint hum seemed to emanate from the runes, vibrating through my bones. My heart raced, torn between fear and resolve, as I wondered if this ritual would save or destroy me.
"This is the Ancestral Awakening, Elena," Morgan's voice echoed against the stone walls. "You will drink this mixture passed down by our ancestors. It will awaken the dormant bear bloodline within you."
Garrick's expression remained stern. "The ritual may unleash your power, but it could also send you into a frenzy or hallucinations. Once we begin, there's no turning back."
I glanced around at the gathered bear clan members. Some looked at me with hope, others with suspicion. The weight of their stares made my skin prickle with anxiety. I wasn't sure if this was the right decision, but for Elva, for protection against Hawk, I had no other choice.
"I'm ready," I said, my voice steadier than I expected.
"Elena, wait!" A familiar voice called from the cave entrance. Mason pushed past several bear clan guards, his face twisted with concern and anger. "You can't do this."
He strode to me, grabbing my shoulders. "This is manipulation, maybe even a trap. Do you have any idea how dangerous these rituals can be?"
"I have to try, Mason," I met his gaze directly. "This might be my only chance."
"You don't understand," his voice dropped lower, more intimate. "Some trials change you forever. I can't just stand by and watch you risk everything."
I saw the worry in his eyes, and something deeper hiding beneath. "I know the risks, but I need to do this. Whatever happens, I won't forget that you tried to protect me."
Mason fell silent, then reluctantly released my shoulders. "If you're determined to go through with this, I won't physically stop you. But I'm staying right here in case things go wrong."
"Just promise me one thing," he added, his voice rough with emotion. "If you feel yourself slipping away, fight to come back. We can’t lose you too." His words hung in the damp air, a quiet plea that cut deeper than I expected.
He turned to Morgan and Garrick, his eyes flashing with warning. "If she's in danger, I'm taking her out—ritual be damned."
Morgan nodded, her expression unreadable. Mason backed away to the edge of the cave but remained watching, his body tense and ready.
The ritual began. Morgan handed me the bowl, and I took a deep breath before drinking it all at once. The liquid tasted worse than it looked—bitter herbs, earth, and something metallic that burned my throat.
Within seconds, heat spread from my stomach throughout my body. My vision blurred; the cave walls seemed to breathe, and the runes on the pillars began to glow. I slipped into a state between waking and dreaming.
I felt something strange stirring inside me—a dormant power awakening like a hibernating beast. Unlike my wolf, which had been graceful and swift, this power felt primal and overwhelming, like the earth itself.
"Her response is powerful," I vaguely heard Garrick say. "The bear bloodline is stronger in her than we anticipated."
Fragmented images flashed through my mind—a tall man standing in a forest, his eyes gleaming gold. Was that my father Rowan? The scene shifted to wolf and bear warriors battling in snow, blood staining the white ground.
The power continued expanding inside me, my bones feeling like they were reshaping, muscles stretching. Pain nearly broke me, and I heard myself release a growl that sounded inhuman.
"She's losing control!" someone shouted.
"No, give her time," Morgan's voice remained firm. "I can feel it—she has potential."
When the pain reached its peak, something inside me cracked open, releasing new power. My hands felt like massive paws, and a deep bear-like roar escaped my throat. My vision tinged gold, and I could smell the fear and surprise from everyone around me.
Then a violent backlash hit me internally. Something tore inside, sending excruciating pain through my body, nearly rendering me unconscious.
"She's experiencing rejection," Morgan exclaimed. "The remnants of her wolf nature must be fighting against this."
As I struggled between pain and newfound power, alarms suddenly blared from outside the cave.
"Garrick! The perimeter's been breached!" A bear warrior rushed in. "It's Hawk's people—at least twenty armed werewolves. And there's a woman with them who looks almost identical to Elena."
Katherine. My heart sank.
Garrick immediately took command: "Split into two groups—one defends the entrance, the other protects the elders."
Chaos erupted as bear warriors rushed toward the exit. Meredith, an elder who had doubted me from the start, pointed at me accusingly. "She brought enemies to our door! She's the trap!"
I tried to stand, but my body was still wracked with transformation pain. Mason rushed to my side, ignoring Morgan's warnings as he helped me up.
"We need to leave, Elena," he urged. "Hawk somehow found this place. The entire sanctuary is compromised."
I could hear the sounds of battle outside—metal clashing and wolves howling. My consciousness wavered between clarity and fog, but I knew I had to choose.
Should I stay and complete the trial with the bears' protection, or flee with Mason?
I struggled to my feet, feeling the new energy still surging inside me—painful yet empowering. My vision cleared enough to see Mason's worried face and the distant flicker of flames.
"Elena, we have to go now," Mason insisted, his eyes fixed on the cave entrance, ready to pull me to safety.
I straightened, feeling something permanently changed within me.
Whatever I decided next would shape not just my fate, but everyone else's as well.
