Chapter 249 The Bear Clan

Chapter 249 The Bear Clan
Kane's arm snaked around my waist, pulling me closer to his side. His body tensed, eyes flashing with predatory gold as he assessed the newcomers.

"Bear Clan," he murmured into my ear, his voice tight with controlled aggression.

Now I noticed the group surrounding Katherine—six massive men with broad shoulders and watchful eyes. They moved with a lumbering grace that was distinctly different from the predatory smoothness of wolves. The largest of them wore an ornate bear claw pendant that gleamed under the chandelier lights.

Guards poured into the ballroom from every entrance, their hands hovering near concealed weapons. The music screeched to a halt, and partygoers scrambled to the edges of the room, whispers and gasps rippling through the crowd.

"Quite the party," Katherine called out, her voice echoing through the suddenly silent ballroom. "Sorry for crashing, but I couldn't miss my sister's big debut." Her eyes found mine, and she smiled—the same smile we shared, but twisted with something darker.

"What do you want?" Kane demanded, his voice carrying the authority of his position.

Katherine's smile widened. "I'm here to tell a story. A story about a missing bear princess." She stepped forward, and the guards tensed. "Or rather, two princesses."

My stomach dropped. What new game was she playing?

"Elena and I aren't just any twins," Katherine announced to the room. "We're the stolen heirs of the Northern Bear Throne. Kidnapped as infants and forced to live among wolves."

A disbelieving murmur swept through the crowd. I shook my head, finding my voice.

"That's ridiculous. I have a wolf, Katherine. Nora. Not a bear."

Katherine's eyes gleamed with triumph. "You have both, sister. That's why we were taken. They feared what we might become as wolf-bear hybrids."

Julian appeared at Kane's other side, his customary smirk replaced by a calculating stare. "Bear-wolf hybrids are mythical," he said evenly. "No documented cases exist."

"Until us," Katherine replied. "Why do you think your precious Silver Moon Blood chose you for this competition?" She looked directly at me.

Kane's grip on my waist tightened. "Whatever game you're playing, Katherine, it ends now. You and your... associates need to leave."

"I'm not playing games anymore," Katherine said, her voice hardening. "I'm here to reclaim my birthright. 'Our' birthright." She glanced at me again. "The Bear Throne has been vacant too long. Our uncle has been regent, but the true power belongs to us."

Alexander Sterling stepped forward, his silver hair gleaming under the lights. "This is an outrageous claim with no evidence. Guards, escort these intruders out."

As the guards advanced, the atmosphere changed in an instant. The men surrounding Katherine began to transform—not into wolves, but into enormous bears, their bodies expanding to nearly twice the size of a wolf form. Clothes tore, jewelry clattered to the floor, and soon six massive bears stood in the ballroom, growling low and menacing.

The guards shifted in response, sleek wolf forms crouching in defensive positions. The bears were fewer in number but drastically larger.

"Stop!" I shouted, pulling away from Kane's grasp. "We can talk about this, Katherine. We don't need violence."

Katherine looked at me with something like pity. "The time for talking is over, sister. Now is the time for action."

One of the bears lunged forward, and chaos erupted. Guests screamed and fled toward the exits as wolves and bears clashed in the center of the ballroom. Tables overturned, glass shattered, and the elegant party dissolved into a battlefield.

Kane pulled me behind him, his body halfway transformed, clothes stretching as his muscles expanded. "Get out of here, Elena!"

Julian flanked my other side, his eyes already glowing red. "I'll cover you. Go!"

I tried to run, but Katherine appeared before me, blocking my path. "Don't be a coward, Elena. Embrace who you really are!"

I felt something stirring inside me—not just Nora, my wolf who I'd recently reconnected with, but something else. Something deeper and more primal. A strength I'd never accessed before.

'Accept who you are...' Nora's voice whispered in my mind. 'We are more than one thing.'

"I don't know what you're talking about," I gasped, backing away from Katherine.

She grabbed my wrist, her grip painfully tight. "You know the truth. Your wolf knows. Fight for your true heritage, Elena!"

I struggled against her hold as Kane snarled and lunged toward us. Katherine nodded to a man wearing a mask who had appeared from nowhere. He moved with surprising speed, grabbing both Katherine and me.

"Now!" Katherine commanded.

The masked man muttered words in a language I didn't recognize. A strange sensation washed over me—like being submerged in icy water and burning heat simultaneously. The ballroom began to fade around us, the sounds of fighting growing distant. The last thing I heard was Kane's anguished howl, growing fainter as though he was being pulled away from me.

Or I was being pulled away from him.

Darkness claimed me.

I woke to cold dampness seeping into my bones. My head throbbed, and my mouth felt dry as sand. When I tried to move, something clinked—metal against metal.

Blinking away the disorientation, I found myself lying on a rough brick floor inside a cage. Silver runes were carved into the bars, glowing faintly in the dim light. I recognized them as containment symbols, designed to suppress supernatural abilities.

"Finally awake."

The familiar voice startled me. In the cage next to mine sat Mason, who had disappeared months ago. He looked thinner, his usually immaculate appearance reduced to ragged clothes and untrimmed hair. His eyes, however, still held the intelligent sharpness I remembered.

"Mason?" I croaked, my voice hoarse. "What's happening? Where are we?"

He gave me a grim smile. "We're in the North, Elena."

"The North?" I struggled to sit up, wincing at the various aches in my body. "Silver Moon territory?"

Mason shook his head. "Far beyond. Beyond any rescue."

Cold dread settled in my stomach. "Bear territory?"

"The heart of it." Mason nodded toward a small window high in the wall, where pale light filtered through. "Welcome to the ancestral home of the Bear Clan, where they're planning to use us both for some kind of ancient ritual." He studied me with curious eyes. "Your sister seems to think you're the key to uniting bears and wolves under her rule."

I clutched the bars of my cage. "That's insane. I'm not—I can't be—"

"Half bear?" Mason finished for me. "I don't know, Elena. But there's definitely something different about your twin. Something that made her strong enough to orchestrate this entire plan."

I closed my eyes, trying to reach for Nora, to feel my wolf's presence, but found only a muted echo. The silver runes were doing their job.

"Kane will come," I whispered, not sure if I was trying to reassure Mason or myself.

Mason's laugh was hollow. "Even if he knew where to look, we're far beyond Silver Moon Pack territory. We're beyond any rescue, Elena."

His eyes met mine, serious and defeated. "We're on our own."
