Chapter 24
I didn't ask what he was thinking. I already knew because I was thinking it to. I jumped out of the van and hurried up to the first officer I could find. Ignored dad as he yelled for me to stop. I grabbed one of the officers, a man named Simon. I remembered working with him a couple of times. He gave me a thin grin and shifted uncomfortably.
"Khloe," He mumbled. "It's good to see you again."
"Which one?" I demanded.
He frowned, his eyes staring at the ground. "Khloe, you know I'm not allowed to tell you."
"Which one?" I repeated. He said nothing, his eyes trained on the ground. Luckily, I didn't have to make them tell me though. Because just then, the officers came storming out, carrying her in their arms.
"Oh god." I groaned, watching as Abbey struggled against the chains wrapped around her wrist. My heart dropped and I felt my body run cold.
"I'm sorry Khloe. I know she's innocent." Simon mumbled.
"What is she being accused of?" I demanded. He looked at me again. Right then I wanted to hit him.
"She's being accused of treason. Witchcraft." Chris said, stepping over to join us. He was wearing a dark, almost evil smile.
"You stupid son of a bitch!" I started toward him, but Simon pulled me back.
"Khloe you don't want to make things worse do you?" He asked quietly. I glared at him.
"You have no idea." I growled, never taking my eyes off the demon.
Chris just grinned at him.
"Tell him I'm coming." I breathed so Simon couldn’t hear me.
"Excuse me?" Chris asked, a fake look of innocence on his face.
"Tell him I'm coming. I'm coming after all of you." I repeated, "You're all done."
"Is that a threat?" He asked.
I didn’t have time to answer. I saw Sara sitting off to the side, being comforted by some family neighbors. I hurried over and pulled her into my arms. She buried her face into my chest sobbing.
"The just busted in!" She shouted, "Like monsters!"
"That's because they are monsters." I mumbled into her ear. "C'mon, we need to get to the car."
"But what about Abbey?" Sara asked, sniffing.
"Go join dad in the car. I'm going to go talk to her now." I told her, thanking the family that had looked after Sara while we weren't there. I hurried over to the van and where Abbey is being kept while officers search our home.
"I want to speak to my sister." I demanded, glaring at the two officers.
"We've been ordered not to let you near her." It was Chris who is speaking again. I turned to face him.
"I'm allowed to speak to her until you take her in for questioning," I said, not bothering to hide the venom in my own voice. He just grinned.
"Are you questioning our high inquisitor?" He asked, mock in his voice.
"Maybe someone should." I challenged glaring at him.
"What'll it hurt if she has a minute with her sister?" one of the guards asked. Chris glared at them.
"C'mon Chris. It isn't like we haven't done this before." He said.
"This is different." Chris argued.
"How?" One of the guards challenged.
"Yeah, Chris. How is it different?" I asked, smirking. Begging for him to spill and tell innocent bystanders what he was.
"Fine. One minute." He huffed and stormed off.
"Thanks." I mumbled quietly to the two guards.
"No big deal. I don't like him anyway. He's an ass." One mumbled.
"And we all know Abbey is innocent. I went to school with her. No way she’s a witch." One guard said, laughing.
"Thank you." They both nodded and stepped aside, letting me into the van. Abbey was curled up into the corner. She looked frightened and I didn't blame her.
"Abbey." I murmured quietly. Her head pops up.
"Khloe!" She whispered, throwing her cuffed hands around my neck.
"I was so worried. I thought they had arrested you."
"They didn't get a chance." I told her. Dad and Sara are in the car. They're safe."
"Everything is hidden. They aren't going to find it." She told me. "They only caught me trying to hide the potion bottles."
"Great. Where did you hide it?" I asked quietly.
"Where the wild grass grows. You know where that is?" She questioned, looking around, afraid someone might over hear.
“Yeah, I know exactly where that is!” I said excitedly.
“Good.” She hugged me again, “I love you Khloe. I’m sorry. For everything. Take care of our family.”
“Of course. I’m going to take care of you to Abbey.” I told her, hugging her back, “I’m going to get you out of this.”
“Your minute is up. Get out of there.” Chris ordered, I glared at him, wanting to wipe that smirk on his face, but I didn’t.
“You hurt her, I’m going to come after you first.” I informed him. He just laughed. I made my way back to the van, seething.
“What did she say?” Sara asked from the front seat of the car. I climbed into the backseat.
“She said to be careful. We need to get mom and head back to the Underground and then Sara and I need to come back at sunset.” I told them, laying back in my seat.
“What? Why?” Sara looked at me wide eyed as our father sped off the curb, several Inquisition officers had to jump out of the way as he speeds off.
“Because Abbey is a genius, and she saved our asses.” I grinned at her, “She hid everything from them. Everything we need to get is in the wild orchid behind our house. If we’re going to go after Hades, everything we need is in there.”
“Call your mom and tell her to be ready to go. I’m sure she’s already gotten the news of Abbey’s arrest.” My father told me. I agreed, pulling out my cellphone and dialing her number. She answered on the first ring.
“Where the hell have you been? I’ve been calling everyone. Sara called and said something was wrong. I couldn’t understand because she was crying so hard.” She yelled into the receiver.
“I’m with dad and Sara. We’re on our way to pick you up.” I told her, “Abbey’s been arrested.” There was a pause.
“She what? Are you sure?” My mother asked in shock.
“I watched them carry her off.” I explained, “They tried to go after me and dad first, but they couldn’t so they took her instead.”
“Why?” My mother demanded and I could hear the panic rising in her voice.
“I don’t have time to explain right now. Just be ready to go.” I told her.
“I should be at headquarters when they bring her in for questioning.” My mother argued.
“No mom, they’ll arrest you to. Just please get somewhere safe. We’ll be there in a few minutes.”
“I’ll be waiting outside.” She finally agreed. I hung up without so much as a good bye. My dad was doing eighty down Commerce Street, by passing cars standing still. Sara was curled up in the front seat, her eyes wide and frightened. I sighed heavily. We pulled up to the district attorney’s office and my mother was waiting outside. Just like she said. I could see Inquisition Officers down the street. They were not uniformed, but I recognized a couple faces. I swung the door open as my father slammed on breaks.
“Where are we going?” She demanded, closing the door after her.
“Somewhere safe.” My father replied calmly as he speeds off once again.
“Someone explain to me what in the hell is going on!” Mom clung to the back of Dad’s seat.
“Oh, nothing much. We’re just escaping the grasp of hell.” I replied sarcastically.
My dad laughed, but then looked back at mom. “She actually isn’t joking. We’ve all been lied to and hurt, Marie. And now our daughters need our help.”
Mom looked between the two of us. “What do we need to do?”
