Falling from Grace

Falling from Grace
Aria's POV

The cosmic power left me like air rushing out of a punctured balloon.

One second I could feel every supernatural being in the world connected to my consciousness. The next second, I was just me again. Human, limited, fragile.

"No!" I screamed as my thousand silver warriors began dissolving into nothing.

Without Creator energy sustaining them, my army vanished like morning mist. The beings I'd made to protect everyone simply stopped existing, leaving us defenseless against the shadow creatures still pouring through reality's tears.

"What did you do?" I demanded, spinning to face Kael.

"I saved you," he said, but his voice was full of regret.

"You doomed everyone!" I shot back, watching the Viktor/Devourer absorb the last traces of my abandoned Creator power.

The merged entity was changing, growing larger and more terrible as cosmic authority settled into its consciousness. But unlike my brief time as Creator, it wasn't struggling with the weight of responsibility. It was enjoying it.

"Finally," the Viktor/Devourer said with a voice that now echoed across dimensions. "Ultimate power in the hands of someone willing to use it properly."

"Properly?" Elena asked, backing away from the transformed creature.

"Without sentiment," it replied, beginning to reshape reality around us. "Without the weakness of caring about individual lives."

The ice cavern started dissolving, replaced by something that hurt to look at directly. A throne room made of crystallized suffering, where shadows danced with their own malevolent life.

"This is my domain now," the new Creator announced. "And you are my first subjects."

I tried to summon my old silver light, but nothing happened. The power that had once flowed through me like a river was completely gone.

"I'm powerless," I said in shock.

"You're human," Kael corrected gently. "Like you were always meant to be."

"Humans can't fight cosmic entities," I replied desperately.

"Then we'll have to be very clever," Alessandro said, reappearing at our side. He was bloody and battered from fighting shadow creatures, but still standing.

"Did you save the government forces?" I asked.

"Most of them," he replied grimly. "But the First Shadow's army is regrouping. Without your created warriors, we're seriously outnumbered."

The Viktor/Devourer laughed from its new throne. "Numbers don't matter when you can simply wish your enemies out of existence."

To demonstrate, it gestured toward a group of shadow creatures that had been damaged in the fighting. They instantly healed, becoming stronger than before.

"I can remake any supernatural being however I choose," the entity continued. "Perfect soldiers who feel no pain, no fear, no doubt."

"Just like my silver warriors," I realized with horror.

"But better," it corrected. "Because I'm not burdened by your pathetic desire to preserve free will."

"Free will is what makes life worth living," Elena said defiantly.

"Free will is what makes life inefficient," the Viktor/Devourer replied. "Watch."

It turned its attention to a wounded werewolf who'd been fighting alongside Alessandro. With a casual thought, the creature transformed the wolf into something else. Still wolf-shaped, but with dead, obedient eyes.

"Now it serves without question," the entity said proudly. "No more pack loyalty. No more individual desires. Just pure function."

"You're making slaves," I said in disgust.

"I'm making perfection," it corrected.

That's when Luna's ghost materialized beside us, her spirit form flickering like candlelight.

"This is worse than I feared," she said, looking around the transformed throne room.

"You're dead," I pointed out. "How are you still here?"

"Death isn't permanent for cosmic Guardians," Luna replied. "But it is inconvenient."

"Can you help us?" Kael asked desperately.

"Not directly," Luna admitted. "But I can warn you. Without a proper Creator to maintain the supernatural ecosystem, all magical life will begin dying within days."

"What do you mean?" Alessandro demanded.

"The Viktor/Devourer is consuming supernatural energy instead of generating it," Luna explained. "It's a parasite wearing Creator's clothing. Soon, every werewolf, witch, and magical creature in the world will simply fade away."

"Then we put a real Creator back in power," Elena said firmly.

"With what?" I asked bitterly. "I gave up cosmic authority. Kael severed my connections. There's no way to reclaim that kind of power."

"Actually," Luna's ghost said thoughtfully, "there might be."

"Tell us," Kael urged.

"The original Creator left backup plans," Luna continued. "Hidden reserves of power that could be activated in emergencies."

"Where?" I asked.

"Inside the people it trusted most," Luna replied. "The Castellano bloodline carries dormant Creator potential. All three siblings have the ability, but it would take all of you working together to activate it."

"Even Alessandro?" Elena asked.

"Especially Alessandro," Luna corrected. "His government conditioning actually made his mind more suitable for handling cosmic responsibility. He's already learned to resist mental manipulation."

I looked at my twin brother, seeing him with new understanding. "That's why they took you as a baby. Not just because of your power level, but because of your potential."

"The perfect candidate for cosmic authority," Alessandro said grimly. "Great."

"It wouldn't be permanent," Luna assured him. "Just long enough to stabilize the supernatural ecosystem and find a proper solution."

"Define proper solution," I said suspiciously.

"Convince the Viktor/Devourer to give up Creator status willingly," Luna replied. "Or destroy it completely."

"How do we destroy a cosmic entity?" Kael asked.

"You don't," Luna said sadly. "But a Creator could."

The weight of what she was suggesting hit us all at once. To save supernatural life, one of us would have to become a god again. And whoever took that burden might never be fully human again.

"I'll do it," Alessandro said immediately.

"No," Elena and I said together.

"I've already lost my humanity once," Alessandro continued. "The government programming took away my choice, my emotions, my sense of self. At least this time, it would be for a good reason."

"We won't let you sacrifice yourself," I said firmly.

"Then what do you suggest?" he asked.

Before I could answer, the Viktor/Devourer's attention focused on us.

"Still plotting?" it asked with amusement. "How adorable. But you're forgetting something important."

"What?" Elena demanded.

"I can hear every thought of every supernatural being," the entity replied. "Including the three of you. Your Castellano bloodline makes you part of my domain now."

"That's impossible," I said. "We're not supernatural creatures."

"Aren't you?" the Viktor/Devourer asked. "You've all used magic. You've all been transformed by cosmic forces. You all carry the potential to become creators yourselves."

It was right. We weren't fully human anymore, which meant we were subject to Creator authority.

"So I know about Luna's backup plan," the entity continued. "And I know you're thinking about using it against me."

"Then stop us," Alessandro challenged.

"Why would I do that?" the Viktor/Devourer asked. "Let you try to activate your dormant Creator potential. It will only make you more powerful when I absorb your abilities into myself."

"You're not afraid of us?" Elena asked.

"I'm afraid of nothing," the entity replied confidently. "I am the ultimate expression of power without conscience. There's nothing in existence that can threaten me."

That's when something unexpected happened.

Elena suddenly screamed, clutching her head like she was in terrible pain.

"Elena!" I rushed to her side.

"Something's wrong," she gasped. "There's something inside my mind. Something that's been hiding there."

"What kind of something?" Kael asked urgently.

Elena's eyes rolled back, showing only white. When she spoke again, it wasn't her voice.

"Hello, family," the voice said sweetly. "I've been waiting so long to come home."

I recognized the voice immediately. "Sophia?"

"Not Sophia," Elena said with that strange, sweet voice. "What's left of her. The part the First Shadow couldn't corrupt."

"That's impossible," the Viktor/Devourer said, but for the first time, it sounded uncertain.

"Is it?" Elena asked, her own consciousness fighting back against whatever was speaking through her. "The First Shadow thought it consumed all of Sophia's essence. But love is harder to digest than power."

"You've been hiding inside Elena all this time?" Alessandro asked.

"Protecting her," the Sophia-voice corrected. "And waiting for the right moment to strike back against everything that destroyed our family."

Elena's body began to change, taking on characteristics that reminded me of our long-dead sister. Red highlights appeared in her dark hair. Her eyes shifted from brown to green.

"What are you doing to her?" I demanded.

"Giving her the power to fight," Sophia's voice replied. "But there's a price."

"What price?" Kael asked.

Elena looked at us with eyes that held both her consciousness and Sophia's.

"One of us has to die for the other to live," they said together.

And suddenly Elena collapsed, her body convulsing as two souls fought for control of one mortal form.
