Chapter 166 Star Purification
Lyra: POV
The amber glow of twilight painted the forest in shades of gold and crimson as I surveyed our exhausted team.
The battle at the forest rift had drained us more than anticipated. Slumped shoulders, labored breathing, bandaged wounds still seeping with void-tainted blood—but Crystal Lake awaited.
"We need to move," I said, gripping the Tidesong Staff tighter. "Nova's reconnaissance confirms the rift is growing rapidly. If we wait until morning—"
"If we push forward now, half our forces won't make it there alive," Kael interrupted firmly. "Look at them, Lyra."
Thor was helping shadow mages with injuries. Marcus knelt beside Water Guardians, their skin bearing purple traces where void energy had touched them. And Aria sat alone by a fallen log, trembling, the gray scar from her severed soul bond pulsing with ghostly light.
Nova swooped down, landing on my shoulder. The rift is expanding twice as fast. Strange structures are forming around it—like it's preparing for something.
I shared Nova's message. Altaris frowned, hand moving to his shadow blade. "Then we must—"
"We'll make camp here," I announced. "Rest until dawn, then move out. I won't lead half-dead soldiers into a battle we can't afford to lose."
Relief washed over the camp. Kael squeezed my hand, his storm energy brushing against my starlight in approval.
---
I found Aria in her tent, staring at nothing. "These should help with the pain," I offered, settling beside her with healing potions.
"It's not that kind of pain." Her voice was hollow, fingers tracing the gray scar. "It's what's missing inside."
I reached out with starlight energy, but it swirled around the wound before dissipating.
"It won't help," Aria said gently. "Like someone tore out pages from the middle of a book. When I cut the bond, I wasn't just severing connection to Valen—I was cutting away pieces of myself and Zephyr."
"Your dragon soul is damaged too?"
She nodded. "We're fractured together. Sometimes I call to her and hear only echoes." Her hands trembled. "Orion mentioned an ancient ritual at the Northern Sacred Mountains that can mend soul fractures."
I took her hand firmly. "When this is over, we'll go there together. I promise."
---
Dawn broke with bloodred streaks. Nova returned with grim news: "The rift has doubled in size overnight. The lake is boiling."
We moved swiftly through forest paths. When we reached Crystal Lake, the sight stole my breath. The once-pristine blue waters churned with purple-black currents. Above swirled a massive void rift, three times larger than the forest one.
"Form defensive perimeter," Altaris commanded.
Kael, Aria, and I positioned ourselves in a triangle around the lake's edge. Our combined elements shot toward the rift—starlight, storm, and wind weaving into pure energy. For a moment, the rift contracted.
"It's working!" someone shouted.
Then came the backlash—void energy shattered our net and threw us backward. I hit the ground hard.
"Conventional sealing won't work," Lilian called. "It's too established."
---
"There must be another way," I insisted. "Nova, circle the lake. Look for anything unusual."
Aria closed her eyes, concentrating. "I can feel its heartbeat. The rift pulses like it's breathing."
Nova's excitement burst through our link. Ancient star runes at the lake bottom, arranged in a circle. Barely visible through corruption.
Lilian's eyes widened. "Crystal Lake was once a manifestation site for the Star Goddess. Ancient texts speak of a star-rune array beneath its waters."
I stared at the churning lake. "I'm going in."
"That's suicide," Kael protested. "The water is saturated with void energy."
"Which is why it has to be me. Only Star-Chosen blood can activate those runes."
---
Captain Elaris designed a double-layered water barrier. Kael's storm energy formed outer protection while Lilian's runes reinforced the inner layer. Altaris added shadow magic to conceal my movements.
Protected by multiple shields, I descended. The lake bottom was streaked with black tendrils like infected veins. Ancient star runes pulsed weakly in a circular array.
I planted the Tidesong Staff in the central rune. The crystal flared with blinding light, awakening the runes one by one, pushing back darkness with silver-blue radiance.
Power surged into my body, but void tendrils shot from above, reaching for me. The barrier began fracturing. I swam upward desperately as Kael's lightning struck the tendrils, buying me seconds to surface.
---
The lake grew calm. A semi-transparent projection materialized—the Void Lord.
"Little star dragon," it hissed. "Your interference ends here. Your body will make an excellent vessel."
The rift expanded, tendrils lashing our defensive line. Several guards fell, corruption spreading across their skin. We channeled our elements against it, but the Void Lord released a massive wave that shattered our defenses.
Aria collapsed. Kael staggered. "We can't hold it back," Lilian whispered.
Suddenly, the Tidesong Staff exploded with silver light. Time slowed as the Star Goddess materialized above the lake—countless points of light in a woman's silhouette.
"Lyra Starscale, you stand at the crossroads of destiny."
She explained Crystal Lake was both her power source and crucial to the void's imprisonment. Starlight flowed into the Staff as she taught me the lost Star Purification ritual: "Astra Lumina" to channel starlight, "Tempest Vinculum" to connect with storm power, and "Aqua Purifica" to merge water elements.
"True power comes from balance and harmony, not destruction," she whispered, fading.
---
I rose with newfound determination. Planting the Staff deep in lake water, I directed everyone to safety.
With Kael and Aria forming our triangle again, I began chanting. The lake transformed from purple-black to silver-blue, swirling into a vortex. Our three elements merged perfectly, shooting up as pure energy into the rift's center.
The Void Lord's projection twisted in rage as the rift contracted and sealed completely.
I guided the ritual's second phase. Waves of silver-blue energy pulsed outward, purifying the immediate area, then reaching farther across forests, valleys, and plains. My consciousness merged with the purification force, sensing the entire continent being cleansed.
As the final wave expanded beyond the horizon, I fell to my knees, utterly drained. Kael caught me.
"You did it," he whispered in awe. "You purified the entire world."
---
Crystal Lake sparkled clear and blue once more. We returned to find Cassius and Valen under guard. Cassius spat curses while Valen sat eerily quiet, his soul-fracture scar spreading.
"Why did you choose the void?" I asked Valen quietly.
Clarity returned to his eyes briefly. "I only wanted power to protect my domain. The void energy corrupts your mind slowly until you're no longer in control."
"Cassius goes to Star Crystal prison," I decided. "Valen will face the Emberscale King's judgment."
Aria heard the Goddess's lingering voice about the Soul Spring at Sacred Mountains. Hope brightened her expression.
"After we rest, I'll journey north to find healing," she said with determination.
I felt calm but vigilant. The Void Lord had retreated, not vanished. Kael and I exchanged a meaningful glance, silently promising to help Aria and continue guarding the peace together.
The silver-blue energy pulsed gently on the lake's surface—a reminder to remain ever vigilant.
