Chapter 146 Dreams and Return
Lyra: POV
I floated in a warm silver-blue light, the weight of exhaustion lifting from my body. It felt peaceful—comforting in a way I hadn't felt since I was little. A gentle breeze carried the scent of storm clouds and rain-soaked mountains.
I followed the whispers until I found myself in a beautiful valley. A crystal palace stood in the center, shining in the twilight. The place felt weirdly familiar, like I'd lived there forever.
Kael walked out, his blue hair catching the light as he reached for me. "You've finally come back, my starlight."
I ran to him and threw myself into his arms. Our dragon souls clicked together perfectly—like a song without a single wrong note.
"We did it, Lyra," he said, touching my cheek. "We sealed the Void Gate."
I pulled back, confused. "We won? For real?" It seemed impossible. "What about Cassius? And Valen?"
Kael just smiled. "That's all behind us now. We have peace here."
The scene changed around us. I saw flashes of our bonding ceremony, crowds cheering as we completed our Soulbound ritual. We built a home between territories where everyone lived together.
Time felt weird—moving and standing still at once. Everything seemed real but not quite right.
This is the future you want, Stella whispered. But not necessarily what's meant to be.
The scene shifted again. I was holding twins—a boy with Kael's storm features and a girl with my starlight traits.
Kael stood next to me, beaming with pride. "They're the new hope for our kind."
I saw glimpses of them growing up—learning magic, spreading their wings, transforming for the first time. Our home was filled with laughter as Kael taught them storm magic while I showed them starlight tricks.
It felt so damn real—every feeling, every proud moment, every touch.
Then the colors started fading.
Kael was gone more often, always saying he needed to patrol borders. When he came back, his eyes looked distant, like something was eating at him.
"What's wrong?" I'd ask, reaching for our connection.
"Nothing," he'd say with a little head shake. "Just tired."
Our connection got weaker. I couldn't feel him like before.
One morning, I noticed his stuff disappearing, bit by bit.
"Where's Dad?" our kids asked, and I had no answer.
I searched our home frantically, finding just one storm dragon scale he'd left behind. I ran outside, saw storm lightning far away, but no matter how I called out, he never answered.
Some paths, Stella whispered, can't be walked together, even by soulmates.
The dream got fuzzy. I saw Kael on a faraway mountain, his back to me, his cloak blowing in the wind. I ran toward him, but the distance kept growing with every step.
When I finally yelled his name, he turned with tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry, Lyra," his voice sounded like the wind. "Some duties are bigger than us."
I reached for him, but he dissolved into light scattered by the storm.
The ground shook. The sky ripped open, showing the purple void. I looked desperately for our children but found only crumbling earth.
"Kael!" I screamed as everything shattered, and I fell.
As I dropped, I heard someone calling, "Lyra... Lyra..."
---
"Kael!" I shot upright, his name tearing from my throat, my heart pounding.
My vision cleared slowly. I wasn't falling through void-space—I was in bed, in a room with Shadow Valley decorations. Several people stood around me, looking shocked.
Altaris, Lilian, and some healers stared at me with worried faces. Lilian rushed over and grabbed my hand.
"Thank the Goddess, you're finally awake!" Her eyes were red from lack of sleep. "You've been out for three days."
"What happened?" My voice came out scratchy.
"You collapsed after sealing the void rift," Altaris said. "The energy drain was bad—you've been healing ever since."
The healers checked my eyes and pulse. "Recovering remarkably fast," one muttered. "The starlight element seems to be speeding things up."
Nova zoomed in circles above my head, her wings glowing. "I knew you'd wake up! I told them!"
The dream came rushing back—the twins, the happiness, Kael leaving. Fear stabbed through my heart.
"Kael... the Storm Hunters. Are they okay?" I asked.
Altaris looked serious. "I sent scouts to find them. This morning's report confirmed their location."
"Where? What happened?" I tried to sit up straighter despite feeling weak.
"They were in an abandoned mine on the eastern side of the Dragon's Spine. They ran into Valen's forces at the water temple but broke through." Altaris explained. "Marcus got minor injuries, but Kael and the others are fine. They ran out of supplies, but my scouts helped them out."
"If everything goes right," he added, "they should get to Shadow Valley by sunset. I sent extra guards to escort them."
Relief washed over me, but my dream still haunted me. "He's really okay?"
Altaris nodded firmly. "The scout captain saw him personally. Once Kael heard you were safe, he started moving right away."
Lilian hugged me tight. "You have no idea how worried I've been! Your pulse kept getting stronger then weaker. We thought we might lose you."
She told me villagers had been praying for me, and many of their void symptoms had gotten better.
"Did the rift close all the way?" I asked, worried my efforts weren't enough.
Lilian nodded. "Completely sealed. The village water is clear again. Your sealing technique was amazing."
"We've got a team watching the seal," Altaris added. "Mages check it daily. It's extremely strong."
---
After everyone left, I asked for some alone time. "I need to think."
Only Nova stayed with me, perched on the bedpost. I managed to stand on shaky legs and sit by the window, looking out at Shadow Valley.
Nova had news, "Altaris's scouts say Cassius found out you're in Shadow Valley. He sent someone, but the king wouldn't let them in."
I frowned. "So Cassius and Valen are still tracking us."
"That dream... it felt so real," I told Stella, still feeling the emotions from it.
Dreams can show possible futures, or just your deepest fears, she answered.
"I'm scared of losing him, Stella. Especially now that we've finally found each other."
I can feel that Kael is safe. Your connection is stable. His energy is getting closer.
I stroked the Tidesong Staff, which still felt warm. "I don't know how to face him. The dream felt so real."
Stella reassured me. Maybe the Star Goddess is just reminding you to enjoy now instead of fearing tomorrow.
---
By evening, I'd gotten strong enough to walk slowly through the palace gardens with Lilian. Purple shadow flowers bloomed in the dusk.
"King Thalarian knows you're Star-Chosen now," she said quietly. "He's softened a bit, but still doesn't want me with Altaris."
We reached a platform overlooking the main road to Shadow Valley.
"The scouts said they should arrive around now," Lilian pointed toward the mountain path.
As the last sunlight hit the distant road, I felt a warm pulse in my chest. My dragon soul started resonating intensely, like two stars suddenly coming together.
Stormbringer is coming! Stella sounded excited. I can feel him!
A familiar voice carried on the wind, straight into my heart, "Lyra."
