Chapter 14 Meeting in the Stor
Kael: POV
I'd been perched on the stone rooftops of Crossroads for three nights straight, moving like a shadow between vantage points. My muscles ached from holding the same position for hours, but discomfort and I were old friends.
Marcus had sent word of suspicious void energy fluctuations near the eastern edge of this exile haven. I wasn't leaving until I found their source.
Movement at your four o'clock, Stormbringer rumbled in my mind.
I shifted my gaze and froze. A familiar silver-blue head moved through the crowd below – the Star Crystal princess I'd rescued twice now. Lyra. Princess Lyra Starscale, daughter of Lord Darius, the man who ordered my family's execution.
How was she here? Did she and her boyfriend escape and flee here?
Something twisted in my chest, a conflict I hadn't expected. She was the enemy's daughter. I should hate her. I wanted to hate her.
Yet you find yourself watching her instead of completing your mission, Stormbringer observed.
"Shut up," I muttered, but there was no real anger behind it.
---
The tavern's back room stank of stale ale and smoke. Thor, one of my most trusted Wanderers, was already waiting.
"You're late," he said, not looking up from his drink.
"I got distracted." I slid into the seat opposite him. "What have you found?"
Thor leaned forward, lowering his voice. "There's an ancient structure beneath Crossroads. The locals think it's just old mining tunnels, but some of the symbols we found..." He slid a piece of parchment across the table.
I stared at the familiar pattern – the Storm Dragon crest of my family, etched into stone. "Where exactly?"
"Eastern quarter, behind the old tannery. There's a passage hidden behind an illusion wall." Thor's eyes narrowed. "But that's not all. Someone's been performing rituals down there – void rituals. The protective barriers around Crossroads are weakening."
My interest sharpened. "Any idea who?"
"We're watching several suspects. Including that water dragon who arrived with the Star Crystal princess." Thor's expression darkened. "He asks too many questions about Crossroads' defenses. And he disappears for hours without the princess knowing where he goes."
"Keep watching Arden," I ordered, rising from my seat. "I'll investigate the underground structure tonight."
---
Finding the hidden passage was easier than expected. The illusion was powerful but hastily constructed. The moment I pressed my palm against the stone wall, an ancient recognition spell tingled against my skin.
It knows your blood, Stormbringer murmured.
The passage beyond was narrow, the walls inscribed with Storm Dragon runes that glowed faintly blue when I passed.
The tunnel opened into a circular chamber dominated by a massive stone door. At its center was a depression shaped like a dragon's claw.
Without hesitation, I drew my dagger and sliced my palm, letting my blood pool in the depression.
The door trembled, ancient gears grinding to life as it slowly swung open.
Inside, dust motes danced in the light from my storm lantern. This was no mere sanctuary – it was a repository of knowledge. Scrolls and artifacts filled the shelves lining the walls. I moved to the central pedestal where a massive scroll lay open.
The ancient text described a ritual – Storm Dragons and Star-Chosen dragons combining their powers to seal rifts to the Void.
My fingers traced the words "the fusion of starlight and storm," and an unexpected warmth spread through my chest.
The same warmth you feel when near the princess, Stormbringer observed.
---
I emerged from the temple as dawn approached, my mind buzzing with questions. As I crossed the main plaza, a faint trace of void energy caught my attention. I followed it to an abandoned mine entrance at the outskirts of Crossroads.
Three hooded figures performed a ritual around a tiny void fissure, their chanting raising the hair on my arms. I recognized the insignia on one robe – the same pattern I'd seen worn by Lord Cassius, Darius's brother.
Lightning crackled between my fingers as I struck, taking down the first cultist before he could react. The second lunged with a void-infused dagger, but I sidestepped, delivering a brutal kick that sent him crashing into the cavern wall.
The third – the one with Cassius's insignia – hesitated before fleeing, shouting over his shoulder: "The Star-Chosen has been found!"
My blood ran cold. They were after Lyra.
---
The next day, I wandered through Crossroads, ostensibly relaxing but actually searching for any sign of void cultist activity.
A subtle ripple of water element drew my attention to a secluded pool between buildings. Princess Lyra practiced alone, manipulating water into complex patterns. The water streams she controlled sparkled with tiny silver starlight as they moved through the air.
A group of local Shadow Valley dragons approached, their expressions mocking.
"Look at the fancy water moves," one sneered. "Think you're better than us with your noble techniques?"
I should have walked away. She was Darius's daughter – let her taste what it felt like to be mocked. But my body moved before my mind decided, stepping into view.
"I'd be careful who you mock," I said, letting a small crackle of storm energy play between my fingers. "Some dragons bite back."
The locals muttered but retreated. Lyra turned to me, recognition dawning in her eyes.
"Storm-wing," she said softly.
"Kael," I corrected without thinking. "Storm-wing is just... a name I use when I'm working."
Her eyes widened. "You saved me. Three times now. Why are you here in Crossroads?"
I gave her a half-truth. "I'm tracking void cultist activity. There's been an increase in this area."
The sky darkened suddenly, unnatural clouds gathering overhead.
"Elemental storm," I said, recognizing the signs. "We need to find shelter."
---
We barely made it to a nearby cave before the storm hit with unnatural fury. Torrential rain and lightning cut us off from Crossroads.
"We might be stuck here for hours," I said, creating a small storm light to illuminate the cave.
Lyra settled against the wall, watching me curiously. "You're nothing like I expected."
"What did you expect?"
"Someone more... intimidating? You saved me from those cultists, then from my father's guards..." She hesitated. "He wanted to force me to marry Prince Valen. When I refused, he imprisoned me."
My mind spun. This did match the ruthless tyrant I'd built in my mind. Marcus had shown me the documents – Lord Darius's seal and signature on the order to eliminate the Storm Dragon clan.
"I'm sorry," I managed. "That's... not what family should do."
We talked for hours as the storm raged. She told me about finding her Soulbound, Arden, and the disappointment in her father's eyes. I shared carefully edited tales of my wandering years after losing my family.
A sudden crash outside indicated a landslide had blocked the cave entrance.
"We're trapped," Lyra said, examining the pile of debris.
I summoned my storm energy, attempting to clear the rocks, but the storm outside was interfering with my control.
"Let me help," she offered. "If we combine your storm element with my water..."
I hesitated, then nodded. Our hands met, and the moment our elements touched, something extraordinary happened. Silver-blue light erupted where our powers merged, easily clearing the blocked entrance with unprecedented force.
We both stared in shock.
The fusion of starlight and storm, Stormbringer whispered in awe.
---
Walking back to Crossroads, something had changed between us. The awkwardness was gone, replaced by a tentative understanding.
"If you're staying in Crossroads for a while," I said carefully, "we should... stay in touch. In case those cultists return."
She smiled, and something inside me lightened. "I'd like that."
I escorted her to the edge of the residential area, where I could see Arden waiting for her. The warmth in my chest vanished, replaced by unease.
"See you then," she said, "my friend."
Friend. The word felt strange – both too much and not enough.
