Disguised

Disguised
She just nodded and eagerly shooed me away. I hope she finds me quickly, as I don’t know where to go, and we have not exchanged contact numbers yet, either. We were supposed to talk about my decision when we got up in the morning, not expecting such a turn of events. Well, we were too naive to forget what kind of world we were living in. And we were even more naive to have thought we were among the ordinary living people in society. We overlooked the fact that someone or some people would or might be hunting us.

I searched for the information desk and asked for my dad’s room number.

A lady doctor came as I was filling up the information sheet for my dad’s admission.

She told me about my dad’s condition. She said he was beaten so severely that he had a few rib fractures, his face was swollen, and he had bruises. He fainted due to chest pain, so his medical alert was triggered to send the signal for help.

The doctor asked a nurse to assist me in filling out the patient’s information form before saying goodbye. I was still shocked, thinking about who could have done this to my dad, when someone pulled me to the side, entering a room full of medical supplies. I tried to turn around to see who it was. It was a bit dark inside the room as the door was closed.

“Who are you?” I asked. The attacker didn’t seem to be violent, so I just asked in confusion.

“Shhhh, someone is following you. Some are watching you from a distance,” a familiar voice answered.

“Scar?” I asked. I totally forgot about her as I talked with my dad’s attending doctor.

“Tell me what happened to your dad,” she spoke in a hushed tone. “We can’t talk in the open. It might endanger him all the more.”

I agreed with her.

“Someone, or maybe more than a few people, broke into my home and beat my dad,” I clenched my jaw as I told her.

“How do you want my help? Shall I stay with your dad or go hunting with you?” she asked.

I can tell the seriousness in her voice. I felt the need to be honest with her now.

“Scar... the BRIDGE sent me to kill you,” I bowed my head as I spoke in a calculated tone and pitch to make her hear me.

“I had guessed, but the question is, are you going to?” she answered in the same tone she was using ever since we came inside the room—no signs of surprise, not even anger or disgust.

“After last night, I have been waiting for the sunrise to come so I can tell you my decision. I wanted to confess my true intentions first and make you decide if you still want that friendship you were asking to share with me, but I did not expect things to get ruined by many ugly circumstances,” I eagerly explained.

“So, tell me now,” she replied. “Do you want to be friends with me?”

“If you are still offering, then yes,” I quickly answered with keenness.

“Good, because we actually have the same enemy,” she answered.

“What? What do you mean?” I frowned.

“I saw men of BRIDGE lurking around. I had to change my look so I could get close to you,” she answered. “I even thought they were after me, but when I saw them behind you, I realized they were here for you, too.”

“Those bastards!” I was furious. They must have been the ones to intrude on my home.

“They did this to your dad?” She asked. “They must have been impatient with you not doing your task,” she added.

“You mean, my task to kill you?” I asked. “They should know you're not an easy target to be so impatient. I bet they have tried and failed many times,” I chuckled.

“Not to boast, but you are right about that,” she joined, chuckling with me. “I am their top competitor. Wiping me out means more business for them.”

“What do you think we should do with them? Your enemy is my enemy,” I asked, feeling more confident to have her by my side. I can bet those bastards will kill me, too, had I been successful in taking Dandelion down. It would have been a loose end they would need to deal with.

“I think we should finish them soon to keep our loved ones safe at home,” she turned her head to look at my face, although it was dark.

“Lead the way. You’re the expert in this mission. I will do as you command,” I looked back at her right straight into her eyes. I wanted to assure her I am more than a hundred percent with her in all of these. Friendship. Mission. And whatever may come along.

The two searched for scrub suits in the room. Fortunately, they found stocks of new ones. They were able to see their sleeping dad in his ward as they pretended to be nurses taking their rounds. Scarlett stood by the door as the watchman, while Voltaire kissed his dad and whispered he would be back before he woke up.

Along the way, Scarlett saw a car rental shop. Paid cash and gave a fake ID. She knew what to do, like it were so natural. She moves like she has everything well planned and calculated. Voltaire, on the other hand, was never a problem for her. He can follow her lead with admirable speed and efficiency. He never asked, and she never had to explain so much. The two worked in a fascinating rapport. Scarlett led while Voltaire was her marine soldier. Scarlett knew where to find their enemies. She even knew the secret passages. No unnecessary talks were done during the whole mission. Their silenced guns and knives spoke louder. The BRIDGE leader was even surprised to see their target Dandelion teamed up with their hitman. But as Voltaire found out from his home security footage that it was indeed men from the BRIDGE mercenary agency who beat the hell out of his dad and brought him to the hospital with so much pain and injury, he did not hesitate to pull the trigger and bury a bullet in his ugly skull.
