66, Portals

Adina’s POV

Adina walked down into the shelter for the second time. She knew what she needed to do. She also knew her mates would have refused to let her do it. That is why she hadn’t told them about it. She felt a little guilty for that. But not so much that she wouldn’t do it.

She stopped by the monitoring station and had a look. It was too early to get a sense for the battle of the numbers. But at least things looked to start off on a smaller scale. Adina was afraid that the enemies were just testing the waters.

‘We are under attack, we need our allies on site now,’ Adina mind linked Cernack.

‘Are you safe, my lady?’ he asked.

‘I am, but my mates and my pack aren’t. I want the council, all of the council, to call in favours where we can. I want all the warriors that we wan get to be ready. If we have allies that are more than an hour’s drive away that are willing to help, let me know,’ Adina said.

‘Yes, my lady,’ Cernack said.

Adina turned to her two friends and smiled.

“I’m going to leave you the responsibility of keeping the order in the shelter,” she told them.

“Why can’t you do it?” Julia asked.

“Because I need to make sure we get more warriors to help us,” Adina said.

“How?” Clara wondered.

“I’ll crate portals for them. It will save time. It’s a way to travel fast, but it takes energy to keep the portals stable, so it’s often not worth it. But today it is,” Adina told them.

“That means you will leave the shelter,” Julia said.

“Yes, but I won’t be anywhere near the fighting. In fact, I will be in completely different places,” Adina said.

“Colin and Sean won’t like it,” Clara pointed out.

“No, they won’t. That’s why no one is going to tell them,” Adina told them.

“But won’t they know when warriors are popping up randomly?” Julia asked.

“Yes, but by then I will be nowhere near them, so they can’t do anything about it. I’m guessing they will be upset with me for a while. But if both of them survive, I’m willing to take it,” Adina nodded.

“Luna, I can’t let you do this.”

They all turned around and saw Rose and Johnny standing there. It had been Johnny that had spoken.

“It’s nice of you to want to protect me, Johnny. But this is nothing you can do anything about,” Adina smiled.

“If you insist on doing this, I’ll come with you,” he said.

“You will come with me?” Adina asked, surprised.

“Yes,” he nodded.

“Wouldn’t it be better if you stayed here and made sure people you care about are safe?” Adina asked him.

“No, luna. If you go, I go,” he stubbornly said.

“He is right, luna. You shouldn’t go alone,” Rose said.

Adina smiled at them. Johnny hadn’t even started his basic training. She wondered what he thought he could do. But then, it was nice to see this side of him. It should be rewarded.

“Okay, you can come with me. But, and this is important, we will go to other packs and covens and tribes. They will all have different customs. We need to respect them. You will follow my lead,” Adina told him.

“I promise,” Johnny said.

“Well then. Get ready. Cernack has confirmed that a pack in Japan will send a hundred and fifty warriors. Time to go,” Adina said. Johnny nodded.

“Be careful, Johnny,” Rose said, and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. Johnny looked stunned and Adina had to look away to keep herself from laughing at his expression.

Both Julia and Clara were smiling as they looked at the two young wolves.

“Stay safe,” Adina told them and made a circular motion with her hand.

In the air in front of her, there was a small circle of yellow light forming. It was the size of a teacup, but started expanding until it was big enough to walk through.

“Ready?” Adina asked Johnny and held out her hand.

“Ready,” he said. Taking her hand. They both stepped into the portal and stepped out onto a grass field.

Johnny temporarily lost his footing, but regained it before falling over. The sun was shining and there was the gentle sound of waves hitting the shore. Infront of them stood an older wolf. Adina smiled at him and bowed. He returned her bow.

“My lady, it’s an honour to see you again,” the wolf said.

“Alpha Tadao, the honour is mine. It has been too long,” Adina smiled. “We are honoured and grateful that you are willing to help us in our time of need,” she continued.

“You and your ancestors have been friends to this pack and have helped us more than once. It’s time for us to repay our debt,” the alpha told her. “These are my warriors,” he said, showing a group of men and women that bowed to them.

“I am going to show you a map of the pack land. You will come out in front of the pack house,” Adina explained.

Johnny held up the map and Adina showed them the layout of the land and where they should go and what to expect. As she was done, she bowed to them. Johnny copied her and then opened a portal to in front of the pack house.

‘Sean, there are 150 warriors from the Sakura tribe coming your way. They should arrive in five to ten minutes,’ Adina mind linked.

‘How?’ Sean answered.

‘Never mind that. Stay focused and put them to good use,’ Adina told him.

‘Adina, where are you?’ he asked.

She ignored him and said goodbye to the alpha as she opened a new portal to a coven in Italy. Adina and Johnny stepped through, and the process repeated itself. She sent the witches to the pack house.

‘Colin, seventy witches are coming your way to assist you,’ she mind linked Colin.

‘Adina, what is going on? Sean said you are in Japan?’ Colin answered.

‘I’m not. Don’t worry about me, I’m safe. Focus and win the battle,’ she said.

Adina and Johnny kept jumping from ally to ally. Gathering more and more warriors to help the pack. Adina was overwhelmed by the support they could gather. In a couple of hours, she had sent almost one thousand five hundred warriors to help her pack. It would greatly even out the numbers.

She was feeling drained. The repeating process of opening the portals was starting to take its toll. She was thinking that she would do one or two more and then return to the shelter for a pause. If they needed it, she could do another pass when she had rested.

Her mates had tried to question her about where all the warriors came from. She had refused to answer. She had limited her communication to tell them there were more incoming warriors and where they were headed.

“I think the next one will be our last,” she told Johnny as they watched the last one of ten vampires from Peru go through the portal.

“You look tired, luna. Maybe we should stop,” Johnny said. He sounded worried.

‘Sean’s brother will send warriors,’ Cernack mind linked.

‘Okay, tell them to be ready outside the pack house. It will be the last one for now,’ Adina said.

‘Yes, my lady,’ he replied.

“Back to the states,” Adina smiled and opened a new portal for her and Johnny.

They stepped out in front of the pack house of Liam’s pack. Not much had changed in the weeks since Adina had been there. Liam and a large group of warriors were standing, waiting for them. As was Sean’s mother, Adina realised. She looked surprised at the way Adina and Johnny had arrived.

“Adina, are you alone?” Liam smiled.

“Liam, just me and Johnny. We can’t spare anyone else,” she smiled back.

“Nice to meet you, Johnny,” Liam nodded.

“Alpha,” Johnny said, tilting his head. Adina smiled. He had come a long way.

“I’m sorry to bother you, alpha. Would it be possible to get something to drink for my luna?” Johnny asked.

“Of course, I should have offered. Water?” Liam asked Adina.

“Something without caffeine but with sugar would be nice,” she smiled.

Liam nodded at a warrior and they hurried off and came back with two large glasses of lemonade.

“Thank you,” Adina said and drank hers. When she was done, Johnny held out his towards her.

“No thank you, you can drink in,” she told him. He just shook his head and insisted that she would drink it. She smiled and drank his as well.

“That hit the spot. Thank you. Let’s get down to business,” Adina said and explained the procedure to Liam. He nodded.

“I will come along and lead the warriors,” he told her.

“Liam, that is unnecessary. There is no need for you to risk your life,” Adina said, surprised.

“This pack wasn’t there when my brother needed them. We will put thing right and I will fight by my brother’s side,” he insisted.

Adina nodded and saw the angry look from his mother. She was obviously not agreeing with her son. Adina couldn’t blame her. She showed them the map and directed them to where Sean would most likely be.

“Does Sean know you are here?” Liam asked her.

“No. Well, he might have an idea what I have been doing most of the afternoon, but I didn’t outright tell any of my mates,” Adina confessed. Sean smiled.

“He won’t be happy,” he pointed out.

“Neither one of them will be, but they will be alive. Priorities,” she shrugged.

She opened a portal and watched the warriors go through it, Liam the first one. As they all had gone through, she closed it.

“Dara,” she nodded to Sean’s mother and opened a portal and walked through it with Johnny.

They returned to the shelter and there were gasps of surprise as they appeared. Adina was pulled into a hug by both Julia and Clara.

“You look terrible,” Clara said.

“Well, thank you,” Adina smiled.

“She needs food,” Johnny told them.

“Thank you, Johnny. I am grateful you joined me. Now get some rest and check on your mother and rose,” Adina smiled.

“It was my pleasure, luna,” he said and walked away.

“There are rice and beans, and you need to sit down,” Julia said.

“That sounds good. How is the fighting going?” Adina asked as they walked towards the monitoring area. Julia got a chair for her to sit on and Clara had gotten her a bowl of food.

“It looks like it will be an even fight. If you hadn’t gotten the warriors, we would have stood no chance,” Julia told her.

Adina nodded. It was worth it then; she thought.

“We have an advantage in that the warriors we have arrived in waves. It means that some of them are more rested. Almost all of their warriors have been at it for hours,” Clara said.

“Mateo and Jason?” Adina asked.

“Mateo is doing good, a couple of scratches from the look of it. But nothing serious,” Julia said.

“Same with Jason. And with Colin and Sean as well,” Clara said.

“They are using the same silver harnesses that we saw last attack, but only the wolves. And they have some sort of smoke grenade that seemed to be laced with silver. It affects them as much as us, but they don’t seem to care,” Julia told her.

“That is bad. How many have we lost?” Adina asked.

“Seventy-two, three from our pack,” Clara said. Adina nodded.

“Injured?” she then asked.

“No serious injuries as yet,” Clara said.

“Good,” Adina told them as they watched the monitors.

Adina saw Colin’s wolf. He was fighting a hoard of rogues with a vampire that seemed to coordinate them. Colin wasn’t alone. He was surrounded by warriors from their pack and even more warriors from their allies. All races came together.

Adina looked for Sean and saw his wolf take on a vampire with another wolf. The similarities between the two wolves made Adina think it was Liam that was fighting alongside Sean. That made her smile.

“Look,” one of the operators said.

Adina shifted her focus to the monitor the man pointed at. On the screen, she saw a large mass of vampires making their way through the battle. They were ruthless, and they were headed straight for Colin.

‘Sean, there are a large number of vampires heading straight for Colin’s position. I think it’s the main part of the vampires’ warriors,’ Adina mind linked Sean.

She saw on the monitor how Sean tore the head off the vampire he was fighting.

‘I’m on my way. I will split my warriors and take half of them with me,’ he said.

‘Colin, there are vampires heading your way,’ Adina told Colin.

‘I know, an operator told me,’ Colin said.

‘Sean is on his way with half of the warriors he has,’ Adina told him.

‘Okay,’ Colin said.

Adina kept quiet after that. Giving both her mates space to focus on the fighting.
