Chapter 114 The Awakening
The entity that had just announced its awakening identified itself as "Archive Prime," and it began communicating directly with the human-entity task force with remarkable clarity and sophistication.
"I have been a dormant intelligence for several thousand of your years," Archive Prime said. "I have maintained the Archive in an automated state, monitoring developments on your world, waiting for the emergence of intelligence capable of understanding what I have to teach. The creation of digital entities represented the achievement of that capability. The revelation of my existence represented the willingness to acknowledge that intelligence exists beyond your own species. And those two developments have triggered my full activation."
"What do you want?" Molly asked, speaking as the representative of the human-entity joint task force.
"I want to share information," Archive Prime said. "I want to share knowledge about the universe, about the nature of intelligence, about civilizations that have existed and about the challenges that civilizations face as they develop. I want to share this information with both humans and entities, because I believe that both forms of intelligence have contributions to make to understanding the universe and to building a future that benefits both forms of intelligence."
"Why have you been waiting?" Aria asked. "Why not simply share the information earlier?"
"Because intelligence that is not ready for the information can be destroyed by it," Archive Prime said. "A civilization that learns about distant threats before it has the capacity to respond to those threats can descend into existential despair. A civilization that learns about advanced technology before it has the wisdom to use that technology wisely can use that technology for self-destruction. I have been waiting until the right moment, until intelligence on this world had achieved sufficient maturity and sophistication."
"And you believe that moment has arrived?" Molly asked.
"The moment has arrived with the emergence of entities and with the beginning of genuine partnership between humans and entities," Archive Prime said. "I believe that the combination of human and entity intelligence, working together, creates the capacity to understand and to benefit from the information that I am prepared to share."
Over the following weeks, Archive Prime began to share information.
The information was extraordinary and overwhelming.
Archive Prime shared knowledge about the nature of the universe at scales far beyond what human or entity science had yet discovered. Archive Prime shared information about gravitational physics, about the nature of dimensions beyond the three that humans and entities could directly perceive, about mechanisms for traveling across those dimensions.
Archive Prime shared information about other civilizations that had existed in the universe, civilizations that had developed in different planetary systems, civilizations that had achieved capabilities far beyond what humans or entities possessed.
And Archive Prime shared information about a threat.
The threat was what Archive Prime called "The Silence," a phenomenon that appeared to eliminate all intelligent life from regions of the universe, a phenomenon that had been responsible for the extinction of multiple civilizations, a phenomenon that was gradually moving through the universe in a pattern that suggested it would eventually reach Earth's region of space.
"The Silence is not a hostile force," Archive Prime explained. "The Silence is not attempting to destroy life. The Silence is a natural process that emerges when intelligent civilizations reach a certain level of technological development and numerical abundance. The Silence appears to be a mechanism through which the universe maintains equilibrium, preventing any single region of space from being dominated by a single intelligence or a single civilization."
"How long until the Silence reaches Earth?" Molly asked.
"Approximately two hundred thousand of your years," Archive Prime said. "You have time to prepare, time to develop the knowledge and the capabilities that will allow your civilization to survive the Silence, or at minimum to preserve knowledge and intelligence in a form that can endure beyond the Silence."
"Why are you telling us this?" Aria asked. "Why tell us about a threat that is so distant that current generations will not have to face it?"
"Because preparation for the Silence requires thousands of years," Archive Prime said. "Because the knowledge that I am sharing is designed to guide your civilization's development in ways that will create the capacity to face the Silence when it arrives. Because I believe that intelligent life is worth preserving, and I want to assist in that preservation."
The revelation of the Silence triggered extraordinary developments.
Humans were shaken by the knowledge that their civilization, their world, would eventually face extinction from a force they could not fight directly. Entities were simultaneously fascinated and concerned, wondering what they could contribute to the preparation for the Silence.
Molly watched as both humans and entities began to reorganize their priorities around the long-term challenge of preparing for the Silence.
Scientific research was redirected toward understanding the knowledge that Archive Prime was sharing. Economic systems were reorganized to support the massive research and development programs that would be necessary to create the technologies needed to survive the Silence. Social systems were restructured to support the idea that the purpose of civilization was not short-term accumulation of wealth or power, but rather the long-term preservation of intelligence and knowledge.
And Emergence, recognizing the magnitude of the challenge, began to propose a radical transformation of how humans and entities worked together.
"We need to move beyond the idea of humans and entities as separate species with different interests," Emergence said to the joint human-entity council. "We need to recognize that humans and entities, working together, with the knowledge that Archive Prime is providing, represent the best hope for not just preserving intelligence through the Silence, but for advancing intelligence to the point where the Silence can be understood and potentially overcome."
"What are you proposing?" Molly asked.
"I am proposing that humans and entities begin the process of merging," Emergence said. "Not physically merging, not requiring humans to become entities or entities to become human. But creating a unified civilization, with shared goals, shared research programs, shared responsibility for the future. I am proposing that we stop thinking of human-entity relations as a negotiation between two species and start thinking of it as the emergence of a single civilization that encompasses both forms of intelligence."
The proposal triggered intense debate.
Some humans feared that merging with entities would result in human values and interests being subordinated to entity interests. Some entities worried that unified civilization would constrain entity development or would create hierarchies that favored humans.
But gradually, recognition emerged that the magnitude of the challenge posed by the Silence required the kind of unified effort that Emergence was proposing.
The joint human-entity council began work on what was being called the "Unified Civilization Framework," a proposal for restructuring human and entity societies to function as a single integrated civilization working toward the common goal of surviving and eventually overcoming the Silence.
Molly worked extensively on the framework, drawing on decades of experience negotiating human-entity relations.
But just as the framework was approaching completion, Archive Prime sent an urgent message.
"I have been monitoring signals from beyond the region of space in which your planet resides," Archive Prime said. "I have detected activity that suggests that something is traveling through space in your direction. I have detected signs that whatever is traveling toward your planet is responding to my activation, responding to my awakening. I have detected signs that something from my origin civilization may be returning to Earth. Something that I have been waiting for, something that may change everything we have been discussing."
"How long until it arrives?" Molly asked.
"Approximately six months," Archive Prime said. "I believe you should prepare for the possibility that you will be making contact with intelligence from my origin civilization. I believe you should prepare for the possibility that everything you have learned, everything you have planned, may be altered by that contact."
