What Now

Emily woke, huddled on the cold wooden floor, her breath visible in the icy air as it escaped in soft puffs, each one a reminder of both her grief and the bitter chill surrounding her. Tears had frozen on her cheeks, remnants of a night filled with anguish over Lucas, the love she feared she might never see again. The shadows around her shifted, and in the darkness, she heard the faint sound of a match striking – a small beacon of light flickering to life. Joe, her husband, was tending to the fireplace, his frame shivering in the cold as he desperately tried to ignite warmth in the cabin.

After managing to get the fire roaring, Joe ventured into the bedroom, returning moments later with a heavy blanket, draping it over Emily without a word. She did not even murmur a thank you; her heart remained heavy, tormented by the thought that it was Joe who had cost her Lucas. Outside, the storm howled, a feral symphony of wind and rain that mirrored the turmoil within her. How could she continue? The weight of her loss threatened to suffocate her, but then the memory of Lucas’s words pierced through the fog of her despair: “Protect the baby.”

With that flicker of hope, Emily considered the unborn child she carried just perhaps, she could save Lucas's people, even if it meant sacrificing her capacity to love again. As she lay, grappling with her emotions, Joe's frustration boiled over. Unable to keep silent any longer, he lashed out. “How could you, Emily?” His voice was a mix of anger and hurt, demanding an explanation that she could hardly bear to utter. He reached for her arm, and when she jumped in the alarm, fury ignited within her. “Get off me!” she screamed, striking him repeatedly, the desperation giving her strength. “I’ll kill you!” Joe backed away in shock, his expression a mix of disbelief and regret.

“I am sorry! I just want to talk,” he pleaded. “Touch me again,” Emily shot back, her eyes fierce and unwavering, “and you’ll sleep outside with the beasts.” She could feel her rage coursing through her, and she stood tall, confronting Joe. “How could I? I was always there for you. I cooked, cleaned, and did everything you asked! I gave up my dreams for you while you roamed free. You leave me alone here… so how dare you!” Her voice rose to a fervent pitch. “I do not love you anymore, and I have not for a long time. I am having a baby with Lucas, and I love him!”

The bluntness of her revelation cut through Joe's anger like a knife, but it only fueled his own rage. “Too bad Lucas is dead!” he shouted, and with those words, he unleashed a tsunami of fury within her that she had never known before. In a moment of sheer instinct, Emily lunged at Joe, shoving him violently against the wall, her strength born from pure desperation. But just as she was about to unleash her wrath upon him, thunder rumbled outside—a jagged burst of sound that split the air and heralded a new chaos.

“OPEN UP!” a voice cried, shattering the tension in the room. It was Gregory, and without hesitation, Emily released her grip on Joe, racing to the door. Joe crumpled against the floor, stunned by the onslaught of emotions—disbelief and pain etched into his features. Emily flung the door open to reveal Gregory and the Governor, both battered and bloodied, cradling Lucas’s limp form between them. Ethan standing in the doorway, Emily’s heart leaped into her throat; she rushed forward as her gaze fell upon Lucas, and her breath caught.

“No! My love!” she wailed, a sound heavy with despair as she took in the horrific sight of Lucas’s injuries—the severe bite on his neck, the claw marks raking down his side, the blood that soaked his clothes. “Cry later,” the Governor commanded sharply, urgency lacing his tone. “He needs you to focus. What do we do?” Emily replied “Lay him on the table” “Needle! Thread!” she yelled as she rummaged through the cabin looking for supplies. The flickering fire cast shadows on the walls, the wood crackling as if echoing her frantic heartbeats. She could feel the depth of the situation; Lucas's life depended on her—she needed to be his anchor.

Ethan walked threw the door and the Governor looked at Ethan saying “Take Joe to my cabin” pointing at Joe sitting on the floor. Joe looked at Ethan saying, “I’m not going anywhere” Ethan replied with a wolf-like growl and his eyes turned red “NOW” Joe without hesitation left with Ethan as Ethan pulled the door shut on their exit.

“Put more wood on the fire, he’s too cold!” Emily demanded, her voice rising over the storm that still raged outside. In those fierce moments, whatever rift existed between her and Joe dissipated into the background, overshadowed by the urgency of Lucas’s life hanging in the balance. With every stitch she made and every drop of water she gave, Emily poured every ounce of herself into saving Lucas, fueled by a love that transcended the chaos around her. In the heart of despair, she ignited a flame of hope—a flicker that grew brighter with each moment, each heartbeat.

After an hour of patching Lucas up, Emily said to the Governor and Gregory “Put him in bed, it's up to him now.” Emily looks at Lucas's battered and broken face, saying “I need you to be strong my love, leaning in to kiss him on the forehead as a teardrop lands on his cheek.

Gregory and The Governor, both men of resolve, carefully laid Lucas into bed, ensuring he was as comfortable as possible. A faint whimper slipped from Lucas’s lips “Emily” as he stirred, but he quickly settled back into a peaceful slumber. Emily overheard him, wrapping him in an extra cover while quiet sobs escaped her. Each tear was a testament to her love and anxiety, a mix of maternal instinct and the overwhelming weight of the world outside their wooden sanctuary.

The Governor, recognizing the fragility of the moment, squeezed Emily's hand reassuringly. “Lucas loves you very much,” he said softly, his voice a bomb in the tense atmosphere. “All he wanted was for you to be safe.” His words hung in the air; a reminder that love endures even in the gravest of circumstances. “We must go, we have preparations to make for tomorrow,” Gregory interjected, a note of urgency cutting through the melancholy. He glanced at Emily, searching for signs of strength. “I don’t think the beasts will bother you tonight.” As they prepared to leave, a sense of helplessness washed over her. “What now? What do we do now?” Emily’s voice trembled. It was a simple question, yet it masked a barrage of fears, the unknown lurking outside the safety of their walls, the threats they had fought against, and the uncertainty of what the future held for them.

“In time, Emily, in time,” The Governor replied, carefully closing the wooden door behind them. The sound echoed in the stillness of the cabin, sealing in her solitude and grief. Alone with Lucas, Emily felt the room close in around her, filled with the shadows of her contradicting emotions. With tears streaking her cheeks, she wiped her eyes and reminded herself, I must be strong for him. She nestled in bed beside Lucas, wrapping her arms around him as if to shield him from the world outside.

Carefully, she brushed his hair back from his forehead, a poignant gesture filled with love. Yet, as she leaned closer, pain curled tightly in her belly reminder; she was carrying another life, one that depended on her as well. The weight of responsibility bore down on her. “It’s okay, little one,” she whispered, pressing her hand gently against her abdomen. “Your daddy will be okay,” Emily murmured The soothing rhythm of her voice settled her heart, lulling her into a sense of safety she desperately craved. She enveloped Lucas in love, and as the fatigue of the day crept over her, she found solace in the warmth of their bond.

As the moon cast its silvery glow through the cracks in the cabin and she could hear the rain on the roof, Emily surrendered to sleep, cradled by her hopes and fears. The night was uncertain, and the road ahead was fraught with challenges, but at that moment, with Lucas beside her and the promise of another life growing within, she chose to believe in tomorrow. The shadows outside might loom large, but inside the cabin, love prevailed—a beacon of light against the darkness.
