Chapter 23

**The Family Fallout**

I never thought my family would learn the truth about my marriage. Up until now, the secrets I had discovered and the betrayals that had destroyed my confidence had been kept hidden in the chilly hallways of Jack's home. When the knock came, I was crouched in the isolation of my chamber, the papers and mysterious messages strewn about like fragments of a shattered mirror. At first, it hesitated, as though it wasn't sure if I was prepared for what was on the other side of the door. But I knew I had to respond when it became persistent.

My father was waiting there when I opened the door, his face a map of anguish and rage. His once-warm, quietly proud eyes were now burning with hurt and betrayal. I was unable to breathe for a while. The man who had been my pillar of support and defense now regarded me as though I had planned his demise.

"We need to talk, Amelia," he said in a low, tremulous voice. Right now. There was only the bare, unvarnished edge of a long-buried truth—no prelude, no kind request.

My heart was beating so loudly that I could practically hear it in the silence between us as I moved aside to let him enter. My father walked slowly and heavily, his gaze sweeping the room as though he were looking for proof of my covert existence. I was aware that he had already, in the back of his mind, heard reports of a marriage that wasn't what it seemed to be, a match planned for power rather than love. To shield him from the terrible truth of Jack's actual mission, I had wanted to keep that world away from him.

He motioned to the shabby sofa in the living room and said, "Please sit down." I fell into it, feeling as though my perplexity and shame were pressing down on me. After inhaling deeply, my father's voice faltered a little before he continued.

"Amelia, I heard stuff. Things that shouldn't be true about your marriage. They claim that Jack married you in a calculated effort to destroy your family's heritage rather than out of love. Is that accurate? Desperate for honesty, he looked into my eyes.

My heartbeat accelerated. Nothing could have prepared me for the expression on his face—a mix of anger and heartbreak—even though I knew that moment was imminent. I stumbled, my speech scarcely coherent, "I...I don't know what you heard." "Please allow me to explain, Dad."

He gave a sour shake of his head. "What? How do you explain his deals putting our family and all we've worked so hard to build at risk? Due to the agreements you made and the sacrifices you made? His voice soared, hurtful and harsh. "Amelia, I trusted you. I had faith that you would never forget who you are.

As I turned my head away, I felt tears welling up, betrayal and remorse swirling together in a storm of feelings. I said, "I never wanted to hurt you." "I believed that I could keep our worlds apart." I considered... I believed that by getting married to Jack, we would have an opportunity to preserve what remains of our heritage.

My dad's expression twisted in shock. "Preserve it? By siding with the man who planned the demise of your father? How in the world do you think that would work? His voice was severe, and every word struck me like a blow.

With the recollection of the damning documents I had found playing back in my head, I clenched my hands. "I was duped," I muttered, my voice shaking with a mixture of grief and rage. I took his lies at face value. I believed I was protecting you all, therefore I trusted him. However, I now realize that I was merely a pawn in his scheme.

We were silent for a long, agonizing minute. After a flurry of emotions, my father's eyes gradually softened into a very hurt expression. He whispered, "I always knew something was off." "However, I never thought it would blind you so much."

"Please, Dad." I extended my hand, but he retreated as though it had caused him pain. "How could you have allowed me to think that Jack would save my life? How could you allow his desire to take precedence over our legacy?

Anguish cracked in my voice. "I completed it for you. for our household. I believed I could work out a solution and preserve our heritage. I stopped, tears welling up in my eyes. "I never thought he would betray us so severely."

He leaned forward, his eyes hardened, his voice quivering and icy. You must comprehend, Amelia. There are considerably more sinister things in this world than a commercial failure. Until the very last, your father resisted those pressures. It appears that you are currently following the same route.

With a surge of rage, I shook my head. "Dad, I'm not going down that route. My goal is to find the truth. I must know the truth about what transpired. I must understand Jack's motivations.

A frightening intensity blazed in my father's eyes. And what if all you've ever known is destroyed by the truth? What if you discover that the man you love if you are still able to call him that, was not who you thought he was? Each of his remarks pierced deeper than the one before it, like daggers.

I gazed at him, seeing the same unadulterated agony in his eyes. Dad, I'm not pleading with you for forgiveness. Despite the tears running down my cheeks, I spoke resolutely, "I'm asking for the truth." "I can't continue to live a lie."

Before he could answer, the heavy quiet was broken by an unexpected knock at the door, adding to the tension in the room. My dad and I looked at each other suspiciously. It was a persistent, almost desperate knock.

My father's eyes narrowed as he slowly stood up. He muttered, "I'll get it," and walked resignedly toward the door.

With my heart racing as though it were trying to get away from the weight of our discourse, I followed him. I almost gasped when he opened the door and saw a courier standing on the threshold, breathless and unkempt, holding a tattered envelope.

As he pushed the letter into my father's hands, the courier's anxious gaze flashed about. "Send it to Mr. Hayes. It is urgent. He turned and ran out into the night without saying another word.

As my father looked over the envelope, his hands shook. His voice was a mixture of fear and fascination as he inquired, "What is this?"

The chill of dread crept into my bones as I took a step closer. I insisted, "Open it," but I wasn't sure I was prepared for what it may hold.

My father cracked the seal and unfolded the letter with shaking fingers. His face lost its color as his eyes quickly skimmed over the sentences. His voice was scarcely heard as he muttered, "Amelia…."

I strained to read over his shoulder as I leaned closer. The brief note, written in a strange hand, conveyed a disturbing and obvious message:

Your daughter's marriage is the key to your legacy's demise, not a way to preserve it. The truth has been tainted. Watch out, for the consequences will be disastrous.

When my father's eyes locked with mine, I felt my heart sink, filled with a sorrow that seemed to burden the entire globe. "They were aware," he whispered. "They were fully aware of everything."

A wave of rage washed over me, along with a deep sense of betrayal, not only from Jack but from the whole system that had planned our demise. "Who are 'they'?" My voice trembling with rage, I demanded.

My dad's face became stern. "I'm not positive," he remarked sourly. However, love and salvation were never the main topics of your marriage. Power—a means to an end—was at issue. And unless we take action, the future of our family is already set in stone.

My face began to well up with tears as the truth of our predicament hit me hard. "Jack," I muttered a single word that was at once angry and sad. "How was this possible for him?"

The ringing of a telephone broke the tense silence before my father could reply. After hesitating, my father gave a cautious response. Although I couldn't hear what he was saying, the expression on his face—a mix of surprise, rage, and resignation—spoke for itself.

His eyes were filled with sorrow when he hung up after a few moments. His voice was heavy as he replied, "It seems our troubles are far from over, Amelia." "They are now pursuing us. I worry that this is just the start.

With my head spinning from the disclosures and the letter's urgent, cryptic warning, I collapsed onto a nearby chair. My family was on the verge of collapse, and the guy I had loved was suddenly a stranger shrouded in treachery, upending my entire life.

The tension in the estate increased as the night drew closer. The weight of invisible eyes and the soft whisper of conspiracies circling in the shadowy hallways was palpable to me. The menacing words of the letter replayed in my head: * "The truth has been compromised. Watch out, for the consequences will be disastrous.*

I was aware that everything would alter with whatever came next. A clear reminder of the price of treachery was my father's face, which was etched with anxiety and grief. And as I sat there, trying to comprehend the heartbreaking truth of our circumstances, my phone vibrated, revealing a fresh message:

* "What you do next will determine the fate of your family. Make a sensible choice or let the consequences devour you.*

A simple "X" was used as the message's signature. The inscriptions burned into my mind as I gazed at it in shock. "X" was who? What were they going to do?

Slowly, my father stood up, his eyes looking at me with a mix of resolve and hopelessness. "Amelia, we must take action. We cannot allow this to go on. Your heritage and our family depend on it.

I nodded, tears clouding my vision but my resolve solidifying. I muttered, more to myself than to him, "I won't let them destroy what's left of us."

But before I could say another word, there was a harsh knock at the front door, which echoed through the mansion like a death knell. With the weight of our shared burden bearing down on us, my father and I looked at each other.

With my heart racing with excitement.
